  • The calls for Silwa to drop out are so desperate. Asking the opposing party to just butt out of the race so the two Democrats can duke it out is just insane.

  • I despise this website. It is so wildly misleading, especially since most of the graphs don’t actually radically change until the 80s. There is no one thing that caused everything/could fix everything, it was a lot of policy changes and deregulation through the 70s and 80s.

  • Nazi Germany built it’s war economy on the backs of slaves. Jews, and political dissidents didn’t all go straight to the death camps; many went to slave labor facilities/camps until the conditions broke them and they were no longer useful.

So maybe not individual slave ownership, but mass state run slave labor absolutely. The end stage fascist economy can’t exist without it.

  • Would not be surprised if they're more full of people willing to work for free than other sectors, though, as racist hate is a strong motivator.

A strong motivator it may be, but it doesn’t pay the bills. I have a feeling a lot of the new recruits aren’t the most financially savvy bunch and won’t be able to sustain missing multiple paychecks. If the Democrats stick to their guns for a while we’ll probably see a lot of ICE agents going broke and quitting.

  • Russia didn't act stupidly, but they did fail to correctly assess the relative military readiness of themselves and their opponents.

I think it’s fair to say that Russia has since acted stupidly and continues to act stupidly. The meat-grinder approach may have worked with an overwhelming man power advantage and at least some training. Instead they’ve just hemorrhaged men, equipment, and morale by just throwing untrained and under-equipped soldiers at the front line.

  • He’s definitely also weak, he flip flops on every move. They would be further along if they weren’t handcuffed to a senile narcissist with one foot in the grave. OTOH they have only gotten this far riding his cult of personality, once he kicks it I have a feeling the whole party will collapse into infighting and not get anything done.

  • It’s just another example of how great public works programs were. If the workers were housed/fed/paid decent wages, I think people would sign up in droves to travel around and do work that improves their country all the while learning useful trades/skills. And something like publicly owned farms would probably pay for themselves.

  • I would agree with it if it was working on publicly owned farms. I don’t support any kind of “drafted” labor that ultimately benefits private owners, or even a system where the government reaps the profits. If people are made to work in any fashion, every cent of value generated should go back to them.

  • Someone else in this thread pointed out that this would just encourage bad actors to make sock puppet accounts to get around being blocked.

  • I don’t have the stomach to watch the video, but from the sounds of it he was almost definitely unconscious immediately and dead a minute later.

  • Our best hope is the GOP imploding due to the massive power vacuum Trump’s death will create. There is a lot of discontent among Republicans right now, they’re all just too afraid (or still too loyal) to Trump to oppose him directly. But Vance? He has the charisma and popularity of a wet paper towel. There will be no hesitation throwing him under the bus.

  • Same thing as everyone else, our thoughts just take a different shape. My thoughts are pretty abstract, I have neither an inner monologue nor mind’s eye, but it’s not just total emptiness and silence when I meditate.

  • I think it’s fair to say that it’s only voluntary if it’s put in place by some consensus (and can be taken away by consensus). Say you work at a coop and all of the leadership is elected and can be easily recalled, then it’s voluntary. Even if you like your boss and don’t want their responsibilities, you ultimately don’t get a choice in the matter.

  • Even if it is an anomalous high point, it’s still a high point! Remember to let yourself live in the good moments and enjoy them, not because they may not last, but because you deserve them. I’m glad that you’re doing better :)

  • And they are no better than answering machines for customer service. Sure, they can answer basic questions, but so can the automated phone systems.

This is what drives nuts the most about it. We had so many incredibly efficient, purpose-built tools using the same technologies (machine learning and neural networks) and we threw them away in favor of wildly inefficient, general-purpose LLMs that can’t do a single thing right. All because of marketing hype convincing billionaires they won’t need to pay people anymore.

  • Sounds like your friend might be bisexual heteroromantic. Happy to sex up anyone, but only romantically attracted to the opposite gender. I’ve had a few friends in similar boats of differing sexual and romantic attractions.

  • Depends on the person. Some people are more in the middle, some lean one way or the other, and others are more fluid and their attractions shift. There’s a whole spectrum of bisexuality. It’s also why there’s a distinction for pansexual, for people whom gender plays no role in attraction at all.

  • Just like other Democrats she’s putting all her eggs in the “communication” basket and not keeping the conversation on popular policies. I know she’s a progressive, but I can’t find much on concrete policy positions because her whole schtick is talking smack about other politicians.

OTOH you have Mamdani, who is crushing the opposition by relentlessly focusing on popular policies. That’s the kind of future Democrats need. Listen to what people want and make that the conversation.

  • You make a good point. Even if this were the line that his base can’t cross, a decade of unconditional adulation on top of his obvious mental decline means he’s going to do whatever the hell he wants, and what he wants is completely unpredictable.
