  • 10.11 first library scan will take AGES because of the new db changes or something. My library is huge (~100tb of media) and it took days. Subsequent scans are much faster, like 10-12 minutes on 10th gen Xeon (roughly i5 equivalent) for a full library scan.

  • This took the joy out of everything.

“Oh you write music? You should make an album and sell it” “oh you cook? You should make a ghost kitchen/foodtruck/marketplace” “oh you do 3d printing? You should model stuff for people or make a print farm” “oh you do open source stuff? Why don’t you work in coding or at least do fiverr coding jobs?” “Oh this home server is cool you should set these up for people for money”

    FUCK YOU

And then when they find out I just like, post recipes or code or models or whatever online for free because I want to contribute back to the communities that taught me a lot they’re like “you’re crazy”. Maybe I don’t want to fucking monetize everything. Maybe I’m sick of everything being monetized. Maybe I believe information should be free and this hustle culture tech bro bullshit that took over the Internet post 2006-08 or so where everything has to be paywalled or monetized is absolutely cancerous and should be destroyed.

Our greed will destroy us all

  • part of it is just music moving forward, part of it is music becoming less about musicianship due to decreasing music education. Part of what makes certain genres like jazz have a stronger appreciation is when you’ve spent at least some time studying music composition and theory so you can appreciate the technical mastery being displayed.

This doesn’t discount music that doesn’t play to those more technical aspects or imply that genres and artists within those spaces are bad or not as good, but it’s more a commentary on the declining quality of educational access in the west. The liberal arts are dead and your kid will be taught the bare minimum to make them a peon that can maximize earnings for a capitalist pig. Culture in decline

  • There are no universal American standardized tests for most required subjects. The standardized tests that do exist vary wildly because they are not federally standardized but instead determined on a state level. Generally they include math and reading. Some states test science, some don’t. Some test every year, some do intervals. It’s a mess.

Like in Pennsylvania reading and math are assessed yearly grades 3-11 but science is only done grades 4, 8, and once in high school (just has to be passed to graduate and only covers biology, year you take it can vary as a result). However, some states like Texas and California assess science every year. Some states like Arkansas and North Carolina use course work and final exams to determine proficiency

  • The youtube algorithm thumbnail and it’s consequences have been devastating for humanity

  • Wikipedia has major process issues that make it unreliable especially in the long term. Editors are given a ton of power to wield, the process of giving them power is not something the laymen is involved in, once they have power it’s fairly entrenched and hard to remove, and bias absolutely occurs. For the most part the bias is tempered but it is seen more heavily in articles like Gaza, Crimea/Ukraine, Venezuela, war on terror, Autism, transgender issues, war crimes of Japan, articles related to colonalism, articles related to big tech controversies, etc.

It’s something they desperately need to address because the right wing nutjobs are gunning for them and are very well funded. They 100% are going to try to put people into the editorial process or convert people who are already there to swing bias (if this hasn’t happened already). The right wing has managed to do this with the us government, they can and will do it to Wikipedia

  • They asked me to look over the policy with them, which I did.

When you enter a store you are tacitly consenting to see products, obviously. What purpose does a store hold otherwise? But the walls don’t need to be plastered with advertisements for you to figure out that cereal is available to purchase.

Similarly in the point of a service like the daycare: if I look this up I am consenting. A service having a webpage isn’t an inherent problem. But when they can encroach on other actions that is breaching consent. When they can appear in unrelated web searches, in related websearches but priority ranking that’s not necessarily warranted, on unrelated or tangentially related websites, on walls in unrelated or tangentially related stores, as videos before unrelated or tangentially videos, etc. now they are the digital equivalent of litter. When they are in a newspaper, the unsolicited junk mail that keeps usps alive, etc they’re actual litter.

A directory is not the same as advertisement. It’s utilitarian and does not destroy everything it touches. But your shitty ad brain can’t conceptualize how this could ever work. You probably work for some company that does advertising bullshit and need to justify keeping some form of modern the unethical modern advertising machine around

  • Sometimes I miss old forums where content was brought back up by simply posting within the topic (though that lead to the annoying and incessant “bump? bump? bump?” posts on threads people wouldn’t let die, i guess).

Post voting is understandable as an alternative but it just leads to so much vanity as a result. Sites like this and reddit have so many dorks that are like “my fake internet points… how could you”. If it matters that much to you just shitpost all the time and you’ll get those numbers up

  • Require consent for advertising.

If I seek out information on your product or service then give it to me, sure. Otherwise fuck off forever out of my life, my internet, my art, my public spaces, my media, and everything else that you’ve ruined.

Now that that’s banned there’s much less reason for disgusting shit. My friend had a baby recently and the daycares consent demands the right to share data collected for marketing and market research purposes. This cannot be opted out of and is required to enroll, and there’s also this really gross thing where they do a separate photo consent form that implies that photos won’t be shared but when you read all the consents more thoroughly (there are several) you find that they retain all data including photos in perpetuity and it falls under the category that allows marketing and market research usage if they so choose. For children that are not even 1 year old!

This is a bigger issue on private equity owning care facilities (a whole other thing) but the fact of the matter is that advertisers have 0 ethics and will do whatever they want to whoever they want. They don’t care about consent because it’s an industry run by sociopaths with the mindset of rapists. They will destroy your product or service if you let them in and take their blood money. Once they’re in they will demand more and more until your product is shaped around advertising, either display or data collection to improve targeting for ad spend efficacy. They don’t care if it’s children, if it’s the elderly, the disabled, the extremely poor, etc. anyone can be sold to and anything can be sold. Let’s make some money. Fuck them, ban their industry, burn it down. If you work in advertising you are a piece of shit and the world is worse because you exist. You made bad choices and everyone is disappointed in you. Destroy the industry from within if you can, change careers, or die a piece of shit scumbag

  • This is almost certainly “apple privilege” (since 3rd party devs would not be able to do such a hack at the OS level prior to app launch) and them preloading the camera so that the time to take a picture from tapping the icon is as minimal as possible

  • While what you say is true to a degree the part you’re leaving out is that the kids who don’t have actor/musician/doctor/etc parents are still perfectly capable of learning these things.

They’re arguably better to bring into the various fields to challenge entrenched perspectives that get perpetuated by systems of momentum that you describe. In acting it’s what creates what led to metoo, in medicine it’s what creates wildly unfair work expectations and elitism, mainly because the old guard did it that way, and if you question the entrenched power “it’s because that’s the way we do things”. New blood is arguably more likely to push back against this because they aren’t as conditioned to play into the system from birth.

The other part that you leave out, as a result, is that these nepo kids then get an unfair advantage. Take kid A - a nepobaby like Kate winslets son, and kid B, just some kid who was obsessed with acting and writing. Let’s say your perspective is true and the nepobaby kid is obsessed with acting and writing in a wild environment of access to intense creative minds. But kid b is no slouch either, living and breathing acting and writing, constantly accessing whatever mentors they can, watching content online giving advice on process, and most importantly just constantly writing (or playing, acting, whatever) for years and years and years.

They’re both immensely talented individuals at this point. But what’s the difference? Kid A has connections capital to make films and eventually to production deals if they are any good. Kid B, at best, can scrape together a few grand to make a student film because they’re not affluent and their circle of peers is also broke. Even if they scrape together something noteworthy they have no connections whatsoever to industry.

In more extreme examples it’s a mediocre singer getting connected to hitmaker producers and media promotion while there are 10,000 excellent artists on Spotify with under 1,000 streams because they don’t have the capital to professionally record and promote their shit

    Etc

  • and the best is when the servers the use to send verification emails are crazy slow so you make a throwaway email (because fuck giving them your email, also handy to track who sells it and who they sell it to), go through their bullshit registration, then nothing. You checked spam even. You think you fucked up, and click resend email, still nothing. You give up and you can’t really use your new thing. Maybe you return it, if you’re smart. Then the next day you finally get the email, which indicates they clearly care about the user experience since they put so many resources into onboarding

  • What defines violence to you? Is removing an individuals health care and letting them die violence? Is increasing aggression on Venezuela that literally murders people who aren’t attacking violence? Is targeting an entire minority group to block access to healthcare that is evidence based to lower suicide rates violence?

And at what point does self defense occur? Do you think the civil rights movement genuinely occurred because of MLK jrs speech and Rosa parks sitting on a bus? Or because of the far less discussed protests that often turned violent (because police were agitators) and other civil unrest actions that turned into fist fights but got white washed by history?

Do you think women’s suffrage was just an issue that was voted on and again there wasn’t demonstrations and violence that has been white washed by history?

Do you think slavery ended because the oppressors decided to stop or did you forget there was a literal civil war over the matter?

If you have a child who is being bullied at school do you tell them to just ignore it? How does that work out? Do you tell them to tell administrators who are feckless and often do nothing of consequence to stop the behavior? In this issue what do you do? If the parents have money they can sue the district I guess, but what if you’re one of the 90% of parents that don’t have the privilege to retain counsel for such a thing? Do you blame that child when they snap and finally fuck that bully up? Sure they’ll face consequences, because schools are fucked now, but do the ends justify the means if it means a bully that has fucked with them for months or even years finally stops

  • Depends on your setup. You can dvr iptv streams and watch later

  • 9/11 was a happy accident that led to the most prosperous time in the world for the military industrial complex because it was remarkably easy to manufacture consent for a 20 year war in the wake of such an incident. Now that that’s over Boeing, Lockheed, et al are salivating at the idea of a new “intervention” that gives an excuse to keep raising the us military budget by billions to literal trillions of dollars.

They saw the writing on the wall in the early 2000s and did nothing to stop bin Laden. Ramzi yousef planned 9/11 (bojinga) and was caught during a test bombing, the intel was sat on by Clinton and bush. This is not a secret conspiracy, Clinton writes about it as a regret in his biography because optics forced him to do so. He literally had folders on his desk warning him about the potential of an attack but he was too busy grooming and raping interns to deal with it. Bush too, but he was just evil and wanted it to happen.

If 9/11 didn’t happen the likely outcome would’ve been pressure to start shrinking the military budget. Why not? Desert storm was a decade earlier and America was essentially seen as invulnerable at the time. The military budget even then was obscene. But 9/11 gave a pretense to go wild. If you disagreed then you must think America deserves to experience another 9/11! Don’t pay attention to the wildly inflating budgets, patriot act, Wikileaks, or what Snowden said

With the Afghanistan/Iraq nonsense officially “ended” the same problem arises, except faster because information travels much quicker than 1993-2001. Eventually people will realize we spend more money on defense than the next 5 nations in the world combined, which includes China and Russia. People will realize their tax dollars aren’t going to their kids schools, or to the roads that haven’t been repaired in 2 decades, or to the crumbling above ground power lines that are dangerous and subject to inclement weather, they overwhelmingly go to military contractors for Israel’s genocide and Ukraine's nato proxy war.

As a result intervention in Venezuela is likely inevitable. It’s classic playbook. They have oil, which is a huge incentive for the gop morons that are fine with the world burning. Drug trafficking does occur through Venezuela, like every country, and the CIA and DEA want control of those routes because they are corrupt. They’re in Latin America, and American imperialism is no stranger to destabilizing that region. But even if none of this were true it doesn’t matter because the military industrial complex needs a sacrifice to keep their profits rising

  • With the exception of maybe lgbt rights and saying that they will raise taxes on the wealthy (but not actually doing anything meaningful, lip service only) what American politician of any party supports these positions?

Also fwiw ubi ultimately is just a pittance to allow flawed power structures to be maintained. It’s a stopgap measure that keeps people like bezos and musk around but just softens their power, for now. “Give the peasants their meager wages so they’ll shut up” kind of thing. True equity means wrestling control of the means of production to workers to mitigate the power of those oligarchs for future generations, and not just until they decide UBI would be something that’s annoying to pay for

  • this is a much better joke, good work

  • I would bet money that drive is done. Cable would be udma crc errors, not media failure. Drive made it 11 years (even if power on time is only about half of that)

  • this type of neighborhood makes me think of that mountain goats song
