  • Nice! If you want a more quantitative way of comparing performance, a power meter is a great way. Average speed is affected by the route, the weather, etc., whereas power is much less influenced by these things (not entirely of course --- I put out more power on hills, and temperature has an effect, etc.).

The only downside is they are really expensive, and for MTB I'm not sure what the options are.

For reference, ~800kcal in ~2hours should mean roughly 110-120W average power, but without a power meter that's pretty much just a guess.

  • ASCII wasn't around then, so it would perhaps be stored in 5-bit ITA2, or 6/7-bit FIELDATA. So likely a 5/8 to 7/8 space savings (unless the numbers are for compressed War and Peace).

  • My idea of "perfect philanthropy" is something like the Carnegie Hall. While I think it is the government's role to provide places for art, I don't begrudge a city for having a more modest venue. So having a world class, tour de force concert hall is a pretty neat philanthropic project IMHO.

  • Most Linux filesystems, being case sensitive, won't find the SUDO command.

  • I didn't!

  • No, I've been a strict vegetarian for a long time, mostly vegan now but not strict about it. I did eat fish a few years ago because it was an invasive species (and also, delicious).

But also, I have no problem getting the food/nutrients I need from a plant based diet, which isn't always easy for other folks.

  • Thanks for the thoughtful response! 1) makes a lot of sense, and 2) makes a lot of "emotional sense" to me (as opposed to "intellectual sense," I guess).

  • "Enters"? You mean they weren't already in racist meltdown mode?

  • What's the conventional wisdom as to why this is so bad, but eating meat basically gets a pass? Like, meat offers sustenance, yes, but it's by no means required. So basically, humans eat meat because it tastes really good --- it's great "culinary entertainment."

This is a different kind of entertainment, but it's deeply offensive to many folks. I'm not trying to be a dick about it, just curious why this is seen as such a sin.

Is it that these animals weren't "supposed" to be killed? Would a movie about a beef cow who ends up getting slaughtered, both onscreen and IRL, be seen as better? Worse?

  • I think it's probably better to amend it to, "if it was covered in poop would you get rid of it and not replace it?"

  • Talk to your manager.

Shortly after I was hired, my manager told me I should feel free to decline any meeting that didn't seem useful, or that if it was preventing me from getting "real" work done.

  • Not parent, but when a minute isn't quite enough, 77 seconds might do the trick. Multiples of eleven are quick to enter, and with a simple nuker with no "minute" button, 66s is easier than 1:00.

  • On the one hand, that sucks, on the other...well, what really sucks is that it's probably necessary given the state of public transit and bikeability. (Haven't been to Nashville, so I can't comment on public transportation there.)

  • Any city in the US

I don't think that's correct, for example, San Francisco:

On December 11, 2018, the Board of Supervisors passed an ordinance (the “Ordinance”) eliminating required parking minimums citywide for all uses.

  • This does exist in major US cities, especially the older (by US standards) ones. I'm in San Francisco, in a "good" neighborhood, and restaurants, groceries, bars, and multiple forms of public transit are all a short walk away. This is very different in car centric suburbs/cities though.
