  • Bambulabs P1S is maybe your best bet for something that just works, but that is also $850 so not the cheapest. Creality Ender 3 is relatively cheap ($200 I think these days?) and doesn't require too much tinkering I think to get good basic PLA prints. I think really any printer is eventually going to require some tinkering to replace parts and that sort of thing, even pricier ones. It's really not too bad though, and kind of fun once you get into it.

EDIT: I just had another thought. Do they have any makerspaces in your area? If so, they almost certainly have 3D printers and would probably let you print stuff either for free or for a small donation. Might be worth it to look into it at least.

  • Meanwhile, actual medical professionals: https://journalofethics.ama-assn.org/article/whats-wrong-criminalizing-gender-affirming-care-transgender-adolescents/2023-06

These laws are poor public policy, as they create a significant conflict between physicians’ adherence to the law and adherence to their professional code of ethics and civil law tort duty not to commit medical malpractice. The traditional standard of care with regard to medical malpractice requires that “medical care for a given patient and health care provider is the quality of care that would be provided to any patient in a similar clinical situation, by the average provider in a similar location.”30 In some specific cases, adolescent GAC treatment, including surgery, may be necessary in order for a physician to practice in line with the legal standard of care (thus avoiding malpractice) and also to satisfy their professional ethical duty to offer safe and effective medical care that promotes the patient’s well-being.31

As Kraschel et al explain: “these statutes would transform their [physicians’] fiduciary duty into a criminal act.”10 Similarly, Lepore et al argue that the laws are untenable, as they “require that health care workers act against current evidence-based guidelines” such that they are legally mandated to violate their duty to “do no harm.”32 The same tension between professional and legal obligations is observed in new abortion laws being enforced post-Roe v Wade, wherein the professional ethical duties of physicians are put in direct conflict with criminal law, forcing physicians to choose between upholding their ethical duties or violating the law.33 Hence, these new laws prohibiting GAC treatment for minors (including gender-affirming surgery) center on the government’s unwillingness to let the medical profession self-regulate—via oversight from state medical boards—or allow civil tort law to regulate physician practice as it does in most other cases.

Criminalizing gender affirming care for minors, including surgery, is both outside the mainstream opinion of medical professionals, as well as extremely wrong from a moral and ethical standpoint. Those in the thread trying to argue that Biden is adopting a "moderate" position with this couldn't be further from the truth. His stance is harmful and extreme.

  • Love Mike Prysner (and Abby Martin). I'm pretty excited to listen to this one.

  • Denji is pretty selfish but there is nothing close to the nihilistic wallowing seen in MiA.

I never intended to compare it in that sense. I was talking about the general cycle of trauma and recovering from that trauma to continue on, which is appealing to me even if that seems strange. I suppose maybe Berserk is similar, but I haven't read enough, so I didn't want to use that as an example. I do think Chainsaw Man is quite a bit better than MiA though of course, fwiw.

  • I think I like it for the same reason I like Chainsaw Man, which is the progression of dealing with something terrible and overcoming it to move forward. There’s sort of a weird sense of comfort that comes from this related to being anxious about the future. Also it’s not the worst thing I’ve ever seen, so maybe I already have too much psychic damage to be bothered too much by it.

  • What a terrible justification. So their reason for defederating isn't hate speech or anything truly problematic, but because... We're a socialist instance with socialist opinions? So it really is just anti-socialism then? It's also amusing seeing people accuse Hexbear of being an echo chamber, yet it's the lemmy.world admins going against their own users to preemptively defederate instances on shaky ideological grounds? Not only is Hexbear NOT doing this, but admins here even made a post encouraging people to act in good faith and follow the rules of other instances. Which instance is the real echo chamber here? Sure looks like lemmy.world.

Anyways, we have better emotes, better posts, cooler users, and a real community that helps people and does good things. If you're a lemmy.world user reading this, make an account here and come on over. I've been on this site awhile now, and it's actually quite nice.

  • Great thread. Thank you for this.

  • Just curious, ever heard of the General Intellect Unit podcast? They have some great content on cybernetics and Stafford Beer in particular.

  • I don't know if this is relevant or a good idea, but... So, lately I've been doing a lot more research into CIA ops, as you might have noticed from some of my posts. I had this idea awhile back of starting a TikTok that would give short video summaries of various CIA and US government wrongdoings. I can't do video editing worth a damn, so I was thinking I might start by summarizing these instances as a relatively short list of bullet points (with proper sources) that would be easier to consume, and then those could potentially be used in all kinds of ways. I'm still busy reading up on this stuff, but it's probably something I should start on as I go along.

I think anti-CIA and anti-imperialist propaganda has way more potential than people realize. Anti-imperialism should be a cornerstone of leftist messaging anyways imo, but I've also found that it's quite popular even among many chuds and others you might not expect. Even if some Americans do shit talk countries like China, Cuba, Venezuela, etc., it still seems like like wars of aggression aren't very popular overall, and almost no one besides natsec ghouls in politics and media like or trust the CIA/FBI/NSA. Feeding this distrust seems like it could be useful for undermining the legitimacy of the "US-led global order" and discouraging future wars against countries like those I mentioned, which is obviously a pretty important thing.

  • Related, I made this meme a few weeks back as a potential prank. I don't know if it might be useful anywhere else.
