  • Oh, it won't even come to that. The agency behind this investigation is going to be made more efficient instead.

  • Didn't South Park do an episode about this?

  • If I were in your shoes and they asked about the travel phone, I would keep it short, simple, and truthful: "I'm following Canada's travel guidelines and using a separate phone."

I don't want to antagonize border agents or imply their (my) country is authoritarian, nor should I voluntarily overshare minor details (which is something liars often do). If they have an issue with me following guidelines like any other ordinary citizen, they more than likely already wanted to search me and are looking for an excuse to do it. At that point, there's nothing you can do other than know your rights.

  • Yes officer, I got a brand new phone with nothing on it to take with me. I did this because I want to comply with the laws of the USA and am afraid that if my phone got hacked I may accidentally carry something illegal across the border. I left my phone with all my lifetime photos and other history behind and I look forward to being reunited with it when my trip is over and I return home.

Don't say this. They will use that as justification to search you and your vehicle for suspicious behavior.

I hate that it's come to the point where innocent visitors have to worry about being searched or detained, but the best thing to do is simply not travel. If you get the wrong border guard, you're screwed either way. If you have to cross the border for whatever reason, keep your head down and don't give them a reason to waste their time on you. Keep it short and simple by saying you're just following travel advisories.

  • I wouldn't put it past them to pull a move out of the authoritarian playbook and hire people to act as violent protesters just in case.

  • what's the point in challenging your deportation if you've already been flown to El Salvador and nobody can bring you back?

Plausible deniability and a performative show given by a supreme court that does not care about the constitution as much as it cares about appeasing the people who gave its members their positions.

Or more simply, for the person being disappeared... absolutely nothing, but now guaranteed by a court claiming "we said you deserved due process, so we're not corrupt."

  • More importantly, with what money? Mega corporations can afford to draw out lawsuits until the end of time (or until the judge gets annoyed), but individuals can't.

  • The latter. And I'm sure the repair bill won't be paid for by the federal government, but whichever state was hogtied into hosting the parade.

  • There's a great opportunity for Dems here, if they are willing to take it.

Probably not. Every time the leadership is presented with an opportunity, they choose to do the exact wrong thing.

  • ignore the window with stock prices

The best part is she won't even have to. Apparently, as of yesterday, it's no longer even there.

  • You don't even need to look further than the guy's username to get the sense that he's an obnoxious little prick.

  • Oh, yay! I can't wait for my coverage to include dietary supplements. If I'm lucky, maybe I'll even get to keep coverage for something I actually need to live.

  • Going for the record of most total downvotes on Lemmy?

  • "Mr. President, can you explain the recent market plunge, and whether they were an intended effect of the reciprocal tariff plan?"

"The plunge? Fake news. There is no plunge, the only plunge is our plunge towards making America great again. The Democrats don't want it, they're selling off like crazy. Numbers never seen before. The tariffs are working, Canada is scared. Mexico is scared. Europe, China, Antarctica, all of them scared. They're nothing" without us and they know it. But the Democrats, the Democrats. Corrupt Democrats are trying to undermine the greatest tariffs plan America has ever seen. They're lying about the economy, tricking the banks to sell. But that's fine, it's fine. It's their loss, they want to lose. The real winners, Elon, Pete, and other real hardworking Americas know this. They buy.

  • Make sure to let the door hit you on the way out, asshat.

  • Someone should check the email and phone number of Adrian Dittman to see if they match Elon's. Idiots can argue that it isn't Elon despite speech pattern evidence, but it's harder to argue when both of them share the same identifying info.
