  • A lot of that might also be location based. Where I am right now we're paying ~1700/mo for daycare. Wife got a job for nearly double our current combined income (for 260k) so moving to Boston, daycare going to ~3000/mo and housing going from 2k/mo to looking at 6-10k/mo. It almost feels like a paycut...but at least driving should become more optional.

  • The main downside to CD19 targeting CART is that it kills all B cells. Since CD70 is on T and B cells you'd end up with a really poor immune system without some sort of kill switch built in. CD70 also has high expression in the liver and expresses in bone, cartilage, and skeletal muscle.... you can avoid that in mice because its likely different enough but I think they'd be really lucky if this passed clinical trials without further development.

  • As a scientist my take of someone complaining about domestic v international students is that they want to treat students like shit. Much easier to do in China with 996 type culture. They want to underpay and overwork the people in their lab. Quantity of time working>quality of time working.

    Most anyone pursuing a PhD is passionate, domestic students are harder to treat like shit because you can't threaten their visa.

    That out of the way France and the UK have put forward some funding for recruitment of US scientists but it is so far only temporary. So retaining actual scientists long-term is still a problem.

  • Also yes, we've got a ways to go but the signs are pointing to a progressive wave. Elections still have to occur and swearing in has to actually happen. Both things that are in trouble from facist/republican rhetoric and actions. ICE watching election centers, predisputed non-R results, delayed swearing in of special election winners. Of course the conservative dems are also doing their part by not endorsing or endorsing less progressive candidates and seemingly ineffectual at stopping anything that is going on. Historically, that has been enough to maintain status quo.
