  • Bothers me too. It doesn’t agitate any emotion. We aren’t teaching an Econ course, we need to be framing up the actual relations and consequences of an economy where the ultra rich are trying to reach escape velocity before the masses hit the bounce off the bottom and come after them.

  • Every fund my retirement account website recommended had nvidia, apple and Microsoft in the top five holdings. I had to specifically know I didn’t want that and move the money out to get away from it… and the other funds are tied up in other stupid bullshit that seems like bubbles too. Imo Retirement accounts are a trap to make working class folks think like capitalists.

  • A lot of 401k havers will be impacted as well but so many people are so much worse off now than 2008 and have no retirements to lose that it will look different.

  • I'm convinced that the long arc of holding office bends towards turning to shit. Your class interests will change, the people you spend time with will change, the system will punish integrity and reward selling out every day for eternity until you've been conditioned like Pavlov's dog to be shit. But the election is happening and someone has to win it. If it's Zohran maybe more people join socialist orgs and read theory and when they get disappointed by Zohran maybe they become more militant in their convictions. If he wins I'll be slightly happy and then move on because it doesn't change a lot.

  • Oh, hi, manager! I didn't know you were on hexbear!

  • I assume Apple has or is going to do the same so if we want to avoid AI we’ll have to go Linux and use alternatives to many of our favorite programs?

  • Can I pay to get ranked last by AI?

  • As someone else has said. Ethan Chlebowski is a great source of knowledge. When I was forcing myself to learn how to cook when I was like 28 I watched a lot of Food Wishes because he's very clear and usually shows most of the work that goes into it without cuts. Sam the Cooking Guy used to make his videos like that but they've gotten into more slick editing which I don't like.

Check out J Kenji Lopez Alt's channel and Ethan Chlebowski's side channel for more raw footage of cooking. It was VERY useful to watch the process. If the recipe said chop the onion or dice the onion or mince it... I didn't know what that meant. Seeing them do it explained so much more. Also a great way to learn things that might not be immediately obvious to look up at first. Like which side of the onion to cut off before splitting it in half and making your vertical cuts before making your horizontal cuts. These things may seem obvious to us after we've been cooking for a long time but I remember how it felt to know nothing.

BudgetBytes has some great recipes and sorting options for different diets. Doing lots of simple recipes is going to be essential. If you start to build confidence and want to go off recipe, I find soups and stews are super forgiving for mistakes and late in the recipe swerves. "Oh this doesn't taste how I wanted it to, I'll just add a few glugs of sriracha (or a spoonful of miso paste, gochujang, ghee, some gochugaru flakes, a cup of lentils, some lemon juice)"

Be better than me, don't get upset when you mess up a recipe. It took me a long time to reframe and realize that I learned from the mistake and can do it better next time. I've only fallen in love with cooking in the last 4 years as the sense of self efficacy has developed.

And finally... do all the prep work before you start doing anything with an element of time or urgency. Consider that the recipe author may chop much faster than you or me so if they suggest, for instance, you start sautéing the chicken and THEN chop the vegetables they forgot the chicken might overcook before us mere mortals can finish chopping. I get all prep work done and put everything in its place so I'm ready to work through the cooking steps with ease.

  • I was forced to watch a zoom workplace presentation about the future of AI. They didn’t explicitly say this but it became clear that they can’t replace us yet because they don’t have the training data. This is why we will increasingly hear about all encompassing software solutions like Zoom workplace and why your boss will increasingly insist you conduct all business inside of it. They have to quantify and feed everything we do into the model. Bullshit jobs are first up… for better out worse.

  • And they’ll do it again with the next bubble if we survive.

  • The right wing has to make sure all populist / working class energy is diverted from a revolutionary bent to a civil war bent. "The radical left wants to kill you so we will make sure we kill them first." It will necessarily become true that the left is violent when violent self defense becomes increasingly necessary.

  • “We should all enjoy this borderline eugenicist plotline to own MAGA“

  • I appreciate everyone who replied. I feel like the DSA isn’t as irredeemably lib as characterized but they have made mistakes for sure and criticism is an important part of the process. I think it would be even better if some of the critics came to meetings and voiced these concerns and ideas. And if there’s orgs that are doing the work they want to see I’d love to know so I can check them out as well. It’s crucial that we get to a place of regularly conducting our political struggle in person with real people.

  • I’m in a chapter of the org and we are constantly having this discussion internally. People within the chapter are skeptical of electoralism. What’s your feeling on how they should utilize members time and funds? I’m not on a steering committee or anything but they listen to every member.

  • I love it here on hexbear but it’s wild to me how hostile a few of us are to a large group of people getting together weekly to attempt to further the goals of socialism.

  • They do other stuff besides endorse democrats.

  • This is chapter by chapter. My local chapter voted against running candidates on the Dem ticket. And are critical of using limited DSA resources for candidates they know would ultimately be unaccountable to them once elected. I think some members of the chapter might be on here.

  • Back when I was trying, my system was to open up the Wikipedia pages for every city and town close enough to work at, find links to all their school districts and libraries and universities and city websites. Open every job listing on every site and apply to everything slightly in my wheel house.

In my experience school and government jobs are less shit than corporate jobs. They pay 30% less but you get treated like a human being. Sometimes the benefits are good… not always.

I see database and system design listings. It’s shit out there but good luck. Fingers crossed

  • The new logo sucks but the fact that you can lose $100 million because the little graphic above your store looks slightly different really demonstrates how fucking dumb capitalism is
