  • That'd be amazing! I hope someone can do that! Lol

  • Techlore has their own Peertube BTW.

    https://techlore.tv/

This video is on there. You can follow a peertube channel directly from Mastodon or Piefed.

If folks want a peertube account there are many services out there. I personally run tubefree.org for those interested.

  • Truly a magnificent ruler.

  • He's not pooping. He's asserting his dominance in his realm.

  • Honestly, if security is a main concern for anyone here, you should run your own. Anyone can run any of this. Follow what you want, then all connections to Lemmy.world come from your server you control that you connect to. I'm on piefed.social, but I'm planning on running my own eventually.

  • Yes, when you ban. You can see IP addresses coming through, but the fediverse folks aren't leveraging your IP for any kind of advantage. No tracking for ads or things. So what security precautions are we taking for Fediverse servers? I peraonnaly do the feel the need, but I'm sure there at valid reasons to do it. But if it's just tracking and ads, they don't exist here really.

  • That's not usually how it works. Sites ban and block IP addresses. Someone going through your VPN caused such issues that Lemmy.world blocked the IP. The VPN is being used to abuse people. That's not a VPN's fault, but the nature of the beast.

I personally don't think a VPN is even necessary with the Fediverse, as none of us are going to collect IP's. But try changing the VPN's location or trying a different VPN.

  • I have a Matrix #the-ozoned:matrix.org . While I don't know a lot, I have quite a few number of folks that do. Or we can all learn and figure things out! I'm often here or on @ozoned@btfree.social as well as my Peertube, TubeFree.org, powered by my nonprofit BTfree.org.

Just say what you need and we can find someone that can make it happen. :-)

  • Honestly, I look at this and I see a future where everyone runs their own Federated services. I can verify my child's age as well as mine and I'm the best one to decide what they can and can't see. So I only need to worry about me and my family.

Or a local community can run it for themselves.

A forced move away from social media, because they can't afford the risk, to one where we all run our own stuff and can follow who we want.

This is only 1 possible outcome of course, and it's wildly idealist, but it's a future I'm going to push for no matter what. So I'm very biased, so don't take my opinion into account. :D

  • Bonfire just instituted a "Federated" flag in their alpha. I think this could be useful.

  • They got back to me and said they're focused on getting their platform up and running at the moment, but it's something they're consider in the future.

While it isn't a win, it's not a loss. We're chipping away. Big Tech will die by a billion cuts, and we will help free others. We just need more folks chipping away.

See someone you might think could help, just reach out and ask. The odds are, it'll be a no. The odds are it'll be a maybe later. But those odds are getting better and better daily for us. People are waking up.

Speak out. Help those even hear about it for the first time. We'll get there. We have 30 years to undo. No better time to start than now.

  • I just messaged them and asked them to invest in their platform and consider the Fediverse. Everyone should reach out to them support@newpress.com and let them know a great way to take the power back is to own your own content.

  • Thank you! Often forget the procedures in the Threadiverse. :D Appreciate that direct link.

  • Idk about separating out the streams, but I've used video and audio for years, and at least for me, it seems to work just fine. You can do direct calls or set up a video and audio chat room if you want. Element is the go to client, I don't know the state of calls on other clients.

  • If you like that one, can I point you to mine? Fireside Fedi. Should be available on Apple as well as direct through my Peertube, TubeFree.org .

Actually starting a new one called WorksOnMyMahine.live as well.

  • Also just looked over the caddy config. Idk if that'd work, but the more you diverge from the intended set up, the more problems you can run into where the devs won't be able to help as their experience is limited as well. None of us know everything. :-)

  • I run TubeFree.org and I've been playing with Peertube, but I'm not a Dev so there might be a way to do this.

HOWEVER, caddy just forwards ports and a simple file server.

Peertube needs an actual webserver to serve it's site. It handles the transcoding, activity pub, moving files, etc. But I'm almost positive you need a web server.

What I did was install Peertube from docs and put caddy in front of that. So caddy handles the cert and ports to nginx.

  • Absolute best of luck to you! :) We need more diversity in software!

I hope AcitivityPub or some federation mechanism is being supported. :)

If you ever want to come on a podcast, Fireside Fedi, let me know. :)

Also if/when you're ever needing someone to test the software I'm starting another show called Works On My Machine Live where I install the software and talk to the dev during it.
