Can't say I've ever heard of anyone doing this--if anything, those in trans or queer spaces have been most accepting of name changes regardless of gender, in my experience. So I can't imagine this is a terribly unpopular opinion.

Conservatism, by definition, wants to keep things the way they are. And the only way to hold that view is if you ignore, deny, or dehumanize those for whom the current system isn't a problem.
So when we as a society identify systemic issues, conservatives will always be opposed to fixing them. It's the heart of their ideology.
Not trying to beat a dead horse, I'm mostly posting this for other readers to understand why they and you have experienced stuff like this.
