  • In ಕನ್ನಡ (Kannada): ನೀನು (neenu) is the informal you and ನೀವು (neevu) is the formal you.

Pretty much all verbs can be conjugated into formal and informal variants with varying levels of respect indicated. And a ton of words have spoken and written variants - but let's not get into that now.

    Ex for verbs:

    • "go"
      • ಹೋಗಿ: hogi, gender neutral formal
      • ಹೋಗು: hogu, gender neutral informal
      • ಹೋಗೋ: hogo, male informal less respectful
      • ಹೋಗೋಲೋ: hogolo, male disrespectful , almost like "fuck off dude"
    • "stand up" is ನಿಂತುಕೊ (ninthuko, informal) or ನಿಂತುಕೊಳ್ಳಿ (ninthukolli, formal) etc.

Where I'm from, we use the formal variants when talking to pretty much anyone. The informal version is mostly used if you're talking to friends, toddlers, or cousins (of your own age). The other use case for the informal versions is if you want to insult someone without swearing at them or using the completely disrespectful variants.

Rules change from one city to the next though, and there are regions where using the informal variants is the norm. This leads to some extremely confusing situations - the first time my girl friend met my parents, she addressed them using the informal you and they were shocked (till I jumped in and clarified) as they thought she was dissing them, but it's just how people spoke in the city where she grew up. 🤷‍♂️

  • Home Improvement @lemmy.world

How to fix this glass that is no longer in place?

  • Bro, which company expected you to do a take home assignment that took 2.5 months? Name and shame the fuckers.

  • Solar, wind, and nuclear energy: are we a joke to you?

  • The ads come at different entry and exit points for every user.

They're not referring to the YouTube ads, but the "let's take a minute to talk about today's sponsor nordvpn that I used on my trip to Antarctica." This is a part of the video file itself, and it starts and ends at the same time for all users.

  • I just checked out fWallet and it doesn't support importing random PDFs so that's a huge downside to me since a lot of events I attend only send a PDF with barcodes/QR codes.

  • Okay, I'm convinced. 😂

  • How are China's stringent lockdowns explained in this conspiracy theory? Also, where do I sign up as a member?

  • Awesome, thanks!

  • Where does something like "use a DC motor to build a tiny little fan" stand, in terms of safety?

  • Thanks, fire safety concerns have definitely played a major role in why I haven't actually started building stuff. I'll keep this in mind.

  • What you said makes sense. To provide context for why I am/was looking for the exact opposite --

I have a long string of failed hobbies and junk accumulated from all the stuff I've bought for them. I carry a ton of guilt because of this.

I guess I'm too hesitant to buy parts and have them lying around if I don't end up using them all if I abandon this too. That's the reason why I was hoping to buy a fixed set of parts for specific projects so that way I can at least convince myself that I used it all at least once.

What are the best resources for getting started with hands-on electronics and robotics?

  • That's a lot of moved goalposts to justify the weird temperature scale logic but okay.

You've essentially justified that 0F and 100F are what they are because some old people died when it was 100F (most people, including the old are perfectly fine at this temperature all around the world) and because you can manage at 0F while wearing a ton of layers and not need a heat source (do all old people manage to survive just fine at 10F or 20F by just putting on some layers?).

Either way, this pointless conversation had gone on for way too long. Have a good day! :)
