  • I have adhd but love cooking. What I do, is make it rule-free, chaotic, and kind of like the other creative things my hyperfocus and natural interest kind of steer me to anyway.

So I don’t follow recipes; for new things, I experiment and kind of freestyle stuff, fail and learn, then over time I accumulate enough to understand why things happen and eventually when the fundamentals are kind of all “clicked”, it’s extremely fun to just apply them in different ways in practice.

I also love baking for the same reason.

But perhaps that only works because it’s very similar to my other interests like music, creative writing and programming. As in, creative, something to work within the bounds of rules that exist, without knowing them, and accumulating understanding through exploration which is always so exciting and can easily slurp up hours of each day in an eyeblink.

But probably worth a test to try and frame it like this! I know it works for me and I have a pretty severe case of adhd, even fully medicated

Edit: also, reading the other suggestions here, I realized there’s another thing I do: I never do the one thing. When I start cooking, I always take it as the one chance to do all the things I’ve been wanting to do, because it’s just easy when I’m already making a mess and piles of dishes and all.

I, same as most everyone, hate waiting around. So I never do; I just have several things going so I can always jump from one thing to the other and then to the other etc. so I never have to stop. It’s the natural way I work with software too and pretty much anything in my life, and most adhd peeps I know through support groups or otherwise have the same “superpower” (ugh).

So it helps for me to have a lot on my hands so I never have to think or stop and can just jump around doing many things. Start hydrating a sourdough base from the starter, then feed it, while those sit, start on a dessert by doing caramel/toffee, and as that sits, check up on and start kneading in flours to the bread, and once that sits again, start stirring the caramel, then put out of heat once ready, then feed the starter second time, knead the bread again, then start working the granulated soy to mimic ground beef (I’ve found egg whites and vegan butter at room temp, and slowly working those in while letting it soak them and spices works so well), then once that sits, and bread still has to rise, and can’t feed the starter yet to put it to fridge, I start packaging the caramel (good idea to do more than you think you’d need, so that allows something more next time more easily), then was a couple of dishes (so never try to do all at once, it’s so annoying and boring), then knead the bread, then feed the starter and fridge it, then continue working in the “ground beef-ish soy”, then pour a pile of flour on the same table already messy from kneading, break an egg or two, start making fresh pasta, and so on and so on… it’s a nice all-consuming flow with a lot of varying stuff to shuffle between and dance around, keeps me very occupied and I usually watch a tv series at the same time or listen to ebook

  • Yeah this is just someone running shit they don’t understand or don’t have the patience to confirm and keep an eye on and build safeguards.

    Do. Not. Trust. An. Agent.

Always encapsulate them, write hooks and lints and ci to block them from doing anything you don’t want. Do not use them if you do not know what you are doing.

At the very least do backups… like in general. 3-2-1 rule and all. Your data does not exist otherwise. Claude or some employee deleting shit is not on them, it’s on you, for being a fucking asshat for not doing the things you do, properly…

  • They really seem to want to shake me out as a customer. The union busting, the trump asslicking, and now this.

Well, happy to oblige. Already replaced my macbook air with a pallet unit lifebook, and have my sight on the new framework laptops for the trackpad haptics and general principle of serviceability, even at the premium. I was an apple customer, I was always willing to pay for the premium to get a more consistent, robust quality experience. Framework really saw the writing on the wall, and I love it. Finally there are starting to be actually valid options for running Linux with the qol of apple hardware besides asahi.

On phone frontier I have zero clue where to go, but this is really just sealing the deal of me dropping apple there too whenever this one breaks. Motorola seems promising though, we’ll see…

  • Yeah I’ve had a similar experience, when I was in my early 20s, and have since chosen to accept missing the train or whatever is the reason I’d need to hurry, so as not to scare someone that bad. Jesus it’s awkward and it’s entirely understandable, but man does it get me questioning whether I look scary or weird or do I seem suspicious and has been a constant source of anxiety ever since. But I’ve realized it’s my job in that situation to clearly signal I’m not a threat, and I’ve chosen to do it just by slowing down myself so the distance grows and I become no threat to them (feels so bad to think of one’s self this way by the way, fuck me, but what can you do?) or alternatively if there’s a detour I could take to still catch the train as in your example, I’d rather go to another block and jog if nobody’s there and not miss the train. Either way, if I’m perceived a threat, there’s nothing in the moment that can be done about that other than no longer be perceived one, i.e stall or reroute away.

This only ever happens in dark, at night, and them likely drunk or tired, so it’s entirely understandable. I’d be fucking anxious too if someone bigger than me started speeding up on me. I have the privilege not to be scared this way due to my physique, so I also have to respect it the other way around too.

It’s so easy to go with the gut reaction of “this is disrespectful” without considering the scenario from a third person you know? I think this is where most end up in and start thinking “you can’t do or say anything anymore” and become either incels or too fucking loud magas or equivalents, because it is kind of hard on self confidence to be in that situation. But it’s always going to be worse for the other, they might fear for their life, and rightly so, so there’s no comparison there once you actually start thinking and exercising your empathy. So if you manage to get past the initial feeling of disrespect, frustration and self-doubt, then this is a real non-issue. And something very small to avoid and handle properly in the moment.

But if you don’t get past it, or lack the empathy to see it from others’ pov, well, you end up a shithead basically, coping unhealthily with that and it might even grow as large to be the whole identity ultimately.

Just rambling here I suppose, sorry to hog all the space, felt like I needed to let that out. I’ve had some friends go with the disrespect and self image and confidence shattering effect that I’ve helped get past it and see it objectively, and I just can’t help but think of everyone who doesnt have the help nor the inner capability, and stray from the sensible and humane path due to something so small as this.

  • Where I live, xylitol has been a staple for decades and decades. It’s good for mouth hygiene, too. A correlation like in the article would probably show as a perceivable difference in overall strokes of our country’s populace as a whole, comparing to others, if it really was a thing that mattered. Might be, haven’t checked, but pretty sure we aren’t any more prone for that than any others. And here we eat xylitol from child up, usually several a day, after meals as gum (not the sugary candy-like gum, but the one intended to stop the acid attack) or pastilles. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t honestly. I don’t even know if you can get sugar gum anywhere, it’s so ubiquitous to xylitol and mouth hygiene.

So I mean, be suspicious, sure, but I’m pretty sure it’s highly tested and kept tracked here, because it’s a daily thing for everyone basically.

  • “Veracity engine for real-time analysis” (“Vera” for short)

    Sounds like normal human speech

I can give a lot of benefit of doubt to independent open source projects feeling vibecoded or ai assisted, I’ve had to partly try and get into it myself because the job market currently just demands showcases for that in the portfolio.

But the moment they ask money and get corporate, all bets are off. Fuck that. When it becomes “serious” like that, it should also be serious in how it’s built and presented. And gating something built using a tool trained on public corpus and the shared knowledge of the humankind, in good and bad, behind closed source and payments is exactly the kind of shit that makes it feel wrong too, not just embarrassing or questionable.

At this point I’ve had to accept some ai use in development is unavoidable when looking at cool projects, I use a tui editor called fresh that smells absolutely vibecoded, but it actually is decent and in my experience best in class for non-modal. So I am starting to feel less and less embarrassed or suspicious as a gut reaction, when I see one, and more inquisitive if I am interested, otherwise just move on without extra feelings about it. Unless it’s obvious slop that is. There are tiers to that shit too.

But if it’s closed source and paid for, it just feels lazy, embarrassing and actively annoying to me…

  • “Be well. Things are tough, you have as much a reason to be tired and frustrated as everyone, and should let the storms and knots and voids within go, lest they consume you too. When you have more strength and are rested, admire the beauty of this world. Do the things you wanted to do, things you wanted to try, places you wanted to visit. Be friendly and honest and compassionate even if others aren’t with you. Light births more light. Share yours. And remember to rest again, when you start feeling tired. Love and care for those around you. Tell them you care. It’s not always obvious. Dare. Be you. Show your light, and let your shadows show too to let them go. Be well. I will try my best to do the same, so let’s do it together.”

  • Yeah I relate strongly with this. Once you get used to having more time and energy for the tough problems, the interesting stuff, it’s hard to go back to the mechanical and menial.

But I’ve found it’s a lot like riding a bike. You don’t really rust, because the stuff the agents can handle today are the kind of shit that you’ve done so much and from the start, that it has become menial and boring. Which means it’s pretty ingrained into the backbone, at least that’s what I’ve found.

But damn if I don’t feel bad about it, recognizing and being conscious about the societal and environmental cost the convenience has.

  • Pay off some debts and the remaining 20k I’d put half stored up for covering running costs for a year or two, lessening our household stress for a bit and help us save up or just live a bit more, and another half I’d invest in homelab and some infra I’ve been holding off on due to lack of funds, hoping it might start paying dividends on my side projects / gigs eventually and pay itself back with more besides. So it wouldn’t give much, but it’d be big mental health boon for a few years

  • Voting for a third party is only valid if a movement, a real one, forms around it. It will never work if it only siphons votes out of the dem bucket and lets republicans to kind of win by default. It has to have real momentum, real commitments, have visibility and voice across the states, so everyone will know they will not be just giving the republicans the win, rather, committing together as a big one, to something better. Even better if the various ideologically motivated but distinct camps within republicans would join the effort. Libertarians are the classic example, but I bet if things get momentum and it looks like the two parties are simply getting fractured either way, a lot of people will jump on the chance to get actual real representation and voice, not just a small camp within a big ambiguous mess the two parties kind of force.

So instead of just voting for a third option and wasting your vote in the current system, organizing would be the real answer, the prerequisite for the third options to be valid. And it’s not that complicated, just needs to get viral and real commitments

  • Very similar process here. I’ve yet to block anyone as far as I remember, but I see red tags, I know to scroll past and ignore. Or if I see it in a thread I’m reading, I know not to engage if it’s bad faith or clearly just unpleasant, even if I have to read it to understand what follows. Wherever I see green or blue, I’ll stop and read even if it seems uninteresting, because those are the people that have proven insightful and empathetic or whatever else it was that made me tag. I usually write the description too in the tags.

Perhaps worth noting though, I’m not sure these tags are a built in lemmy or equivalent feature, or rather a client thing. I use voyager if someone’s interested.

  • But isn’t it kind of a game of chicken then for the consumer markets? Whoever gambles the other way, can win in both volume and availability, being able to cut the others off market just by pricing, enabled by the prior two points, get brand points by the ladle while at it, and kind of become a staple of the consumer market. When the bubble pops and others return, the market isn’t the same and everyone else sits at a disadvantage?

  • It isn’t always rational. Sometimes it just comes up in the moment and you go with it.

Either way, the bare minimum to do is talk it through after and see how it impacts everyone in the mix, and address that. The worst to do is not to say anything and hide it until it breaks someone.

I have a habit of openly talking about this kind of thing with my partners. I’ve been in poly relationships and I’ve learnt to talk about all this without emotion taking over, but I still understand the taboo and kind of weird gut reactions to these things people have. So I often like to explain that if things happen in the moment and just kind of pass, that’s okay: but it goes both ways, and I hope they’ll at least try to be understanding if it ever happens to me too and talk it through.

It’s exactly as awkward and kind of “fragile” to talk about the first time over, as you’d expect. But once out there in the open, I hope it gives us confidence and trust to talk freely. To this day I’ve always managed to control myself and break off the fling when it happens, but one day I might not and I think it’s okay. For them too. Life throws us shit and we aren’t really prepared for all of it. And sometimes it throws sweet stuff and it’d be a shame not to indulge if it really is that strong a moment. In mono relationships that is. In poly or free it’s just much easier about all this. But tougher on some other things, like sharing time and learning to accept and deal with not being the sole focus and not keeping a sole focus yourself.

I haven’t had any reason to believe any of my exes would’ve cheated, and I feel like we’d have all been comfortable enough to talk about it if it ever happened. Neither have I broken anyone’s trust once earned and kept.

But things happen and I’m not going to pretend to be immune somehow. World is chaotic and unpredictable and fucking beautiful.

  • Even if I don’t personally agree with all of the ideology behind the lemmy devs, at least they are ideologically posed to keep the thing open, for the people, by the people. I respect that. A lot, in fact.

Piefed, on the surface, seems a lot less principled, and seems to also attract the non-leftist types by default, perhaps as some kneejerk reaction to the lemmy devs’ ideology. As a rule of thumb that sounds just outright worse to me, as a user, even if it seems not to impact much yet.

This is just me, as a political and ideological layperson, following my fragile principles. I might be betting wrong in doing so, but then again, might be right too. Either way, they work much the same and talk the same protocol, so it seems to me it’s just a choice of principle.

Either will work. Just thought I’d share my two cents.
