  • If Bing's database isn't good enough for you, Startpage supposedly uses Google's database and doesn't shoehorn AI into the results. You'll want an adblocker, though. (My usual order of query is Duckduckgo, then Startpage, then Mojeek if the other two didn't find anything useful.)

  • I suspect the truth has more to do with money than wood fibre supply (I mean, you can truck wood chips in, if it's profitable enough). These days, the single largest pulp and paper producer in the world is China. They're difficult to compete with on product price.

  • The "O" word, actually: oligarchs (or their relatives or best buddies). Chances are that at least some of them are under sanction in more civilized countries.

  • Fuyumura's "what the heck are you going on about? What's wrong with you? Give me back my friend!" experience is one regrettably familiar to many aro-aces. 🫤

And apparently, if there's such a thing as Evil!Santa, he dresses like he works for the Mafia.

  • I doubt most owners of recent-model luxury-brand cars in Russia are average joes for which this is their only transport. I therefore find my sympathy to be somewhat limited.

  • Mirroring what happened in Ontario years ago. Used to be that northeastern Ontario had a bunch of mills. Now there's only Kapuskasing left, and they're not really viable—by my understanding, they've been hanging on by their fingernails due to being mostly employee-owned and so not having to do more than break even, but they've now had to approach the government for a bailout, and their future seems doubtful. The next-to-last was Espanola, which closed down a couple of years ago now.

  • If that's the reason for things freezing up, the OOM reaper will come along and sort it out eventually, although it isn't exactly quick on its feet.

  • So I guess the "real" Akira was the guy standing beside Towasa in the flashback . . . The question now is "why?"

  • Then they'll complain about having nothing to complain about.

  • "Uttering threats" is an offence under the Criminal Code and, as I understand it, the requirements for it to be considered a crime are pretty steep—kids on schoolbusses wouldn't qualify because their threats usually aren't meant to be taken seriously. It's more like "dude standing over you holding a knife threatens to stab you" stuff.

  • Nah, there's plenty of variety. Keep in mind that not all distros ship with any graphical environment at all, and you're not obliged to keep your distro's default even if it did ship with one. Linux in general is just as happy with ratpoison as it is with KDE.

  • I didn't think the horse was still intact enough that you could find any hide.

  • Ugh. I hope that there being a use for the little bastards now doesn't make people breed them on purpose.

  • And this is why bribing foreign companies to set up shop here was a bad idea from the outset: they have no respect for us whatsoever.

  • Well, trees deserve protection too, but they're unlikely to be on Snapchat in my experience. It just operates on the wrong timescale for them.

  • It might make a difference if it's triggered right when he's done something that's caused his party's popularity to dip.

  • . . . I'm now wondering whether Brolite's shadow's personal hygiene would be just as bad as hers, or the exact opposite. 😅

  • Python and Ruby have both had various repo issues too.

I've never heard of anything similar with Perl, but that may partly be because applications for new developers who want to join CPAN still appear to be processed by humans, with up to a couple of weeks lag. The time inefficiency plus the language being less popular probably makes it an unattractive target.

  • It would look less suspicious if it hadn't happened in Alberta.
