  • You are conflating the officers and the politicians with the rank and file. They were separate groups with different reasons for fighting or not fighting. And again, you are reducing the motivations of humans to "they were evil racists" which is reductive and shortsighted. The history is significantly more nuanced and disregarding any analysis or holistic viewpoint is counterproductive to determining the true causes of such heinous acts.

    The world isn't black and white (no pun intended). There are causes and effects beyond just the surface level. People act out of complex interactions of culture, politics, economics, and community. Most likely in their minds they fought and died for more than racism.

    And please, chill out a bit. I realize that what I'm suggesting isn't popular and is filled with gray areas but I'm just trying to be a good person who empathizes with others so I can better understand their motives and hopefully better convince them of the flaws in their worldviews.

  • People who willingly fight for the exclusive cause of overthrowing democracy in favor of racist chattel slavery are absolutely burning in hell, should there be such a thing.

    I don't believe that's why most southerners fought. Perhaps a factor, but not the driving force.

    Were they not convinced that their way of life and culture were under attack, beyond just having superiority over other races. Convinced by the elite that did own slaves and whipped into a frenzy, very much like today's politics against taxation.

    Additionally, while they were undoubtedly racist, it is unfortunately the case that most never had the opportunity to not be racist. Their friends were racist, their family were racist, their government was racist, they never knew anything else. Is it fair to condemn someone to hell because they were doing what they were taught is good and just? What seems obvious to us in 2025 is not so cut and dry to a person engulfed in racist culture against their will. And never given a fair opportunity to change.

    My point being, saying they were all evil is reductive and shows a lack of empathy and understanding of human nature and undermines the true root causes of racism to hand-waving "oh theyre just evil" rather than getting to the heart of what makes someone hold those beliefs

  • I also think that even if you were a "filthy both-siding liberal nazi-enabler" the only way to convince anyone of anything is to convince them. Violence and hateful rhetoric has never convinced a single human, except by coercion and fear. And a Nazi living in fear is still a Nazi.

    I want to rid the world of extremist and hateful views by convincing them that their viewpoints are incorrect, not stifling them into hibernation.

    But if you were to log into Lemmy as a conservative or pro capitalist I think the toxicity would ratchet up instantly, even if you tried to discuss in "good faith"

  • I don't know much about the fellow, I haven't seen many videos of his, but I did see a clip of him interviewing PirateSoftware when the internet was slamming him and the way Dr. K talked to the "patient" was super inflammatory and extremely unhelpful. I found it really off putting and made me look at Dr. K as more of a showman than a legitimate therapist.

    Finding out that he's allegedly done much worse is just awful

    I think we should promote and encourage therapy but not as performative art

  • Maybe an outside one here, but when Dragon Age: Origins was still new, I was much younger and hadn't had a serious girlfriend yet. And in general, I got quite a bit more attached to characters in games, including the romantic interests especially.

    Spoilers ahead if you haven't beaten the game

    At the end of the game, my character died and I had romanced the character Leliana. The end screen shows a somber note about Leliana being heartbroken and wandering the world missing the character.

    Something about that really struck something in me and made me extremely sad. I think it's probably the only time I've ever really cried because of a video game.

    I can't actually find a reference to this ending online. The wiki isn't 100% complete. Otherwise, I would have linked the blurb here.

    Now a days I struggle to connect with characters in games. They will never be as real as my friends or my partner, so it's hard to form such an emotional connection as I did when I was a teenager.

  • I think the voting ratio pretty well demonstrates one obvious hurdle: people don't like it.

    Even people who are happy with AI seem repulsed by the idea of it replacing human intimacy. So unless you have some real ride or die friend and family, you'll have to risk judgment from them or keep it a secret

    There's also the fact that right now most AI bots are toadies by nature - meaning they will rarely disagree with you and will generally capitulate to your will. That would be off-putting for some, including myself.

    They also (currently) don't have great memory and will not always recall things that are important to you. No matter hpw any times you tell them.

    Obviously, there are larger issues to consider, but if you're already considering the leap then you may not necessarily be convinced by arguments about humanity and what's natural.

  • The hard part is the skill gap - it's not like the pros are a little better than you and you can maybe eke out win. They absolutely dominate you.

    I think these are interesting findings, they definitely conform to my experience, but I'd want to always have more data and larger sample sizes.

    One point in particular stood out to me - the lack of LLM context. I have a new person on my team (junior level) that uses AI for everything, and it's so obvious that the LLM is getting tripped up with the lack of context. Not all the required information is in a single repository, and it needs additional info like the documentation and spoken architectures that aren't explicitly documented, historical choices as to why we make decisions in a certain way, or even just style guides. The LLM context window just isn't large enough right now to be a truly effective programmer for large, complex projects

  • That's actually a really good point you've made here. It's easy to defend the shoes as a parent because you're the one who (1) understands the rationale behind buying them and (2) made the decision to buy them

    I wonder if a good decision in this scenario is to just give the child a shoe allowance and let them pick. If they want Nike's they will have to find a pair that fits the budget

  • Agreed, this is a relatively simple "tool" as the LLM parlance goes. It's what Model Context Protocol (MCP) is designed to facilitate

    To verify, the author should try the same prompts on a local LLM with no tools enabled and most likely the LLM will respond with some nonsense

  • No, it is not that bad. It's actually very nice.

    It affords a lot of consistency, is relatively easy to understand (once you're familiar with the convention), and theming allows you to modify all the colors and sizing in one file rather than modifying a lot of CSS

    I think the worst that can be said about it is that it is unnecessary, but I cannot see a true downside to using it besides personal preference. It gets the job done efficiently and correctly and that's what's important at the end of the day
