  • I used it and didn’t mind it at the time. I personally never ran into any issues with it, and then upgraded to 7 when I got a chance.

It was certainly more stable than ME, which I also had the pleasure of running.

  • People putting things into salads need to chill out.

Tomatoes, cucumbers, mushrooms, salt, pepper, bacon, eggs, dressing, croutons, cheese, olives, olive oil, vinegar, peppers, salsa, chicken, steak, tortilla chips, limes, chow mien noodles, etc. are all things one might put in a salad that aren’t vegetables. You don’t have to label everything vegetables just because there’s some lettuce in there.

  • You don’t believe that insects are animals? Did you think they were plants?

  • What? Who’s calling pumpkins, squashes, and cucumbers vegetables?

And no one calls mushrooms vegetables: mushrooms are mushrooms.

  • Yours must have, because it’s uncensored for me.

  • Prince Andrew will remain a prince, but will cease to be the Duke of York - a title received from his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth - as well as giving up membership of the Order of the Garter, the oldest and most senior order of chivalry in Britain.

    [. . .]

Sarah Ferguson, his former wife, will no longer be known as the Duchess of York, but their daughters - Beatrice and Eugenie - will continue to have the title of princess.

    How quaint.

  • 35 GB? Hard pass.

  • Mississippi

  • Interesting. In the US, most jurisdictions have open container laws: A drink needs to be either factory sealed or in a place where it is not readily accessible (such as a trunk) or the driver is in violation.

  • 80% of government “debt” is actually in the form of bonds. People voluntarily give the government more money than they’re required in taxes because they believe the government will be strong enough to pay them back interest later. The government does not have to pay down all that debt because the bonds are being cashed out at a predictable rate and people are buying new bonds all the time, so the new bonds finance the old ones.

For example, someone in 1995 buys a series EE bond at $100. It’ll be worth roughly $200-215 now, which is 30 year maturation. But due to inflation, $100 in 1995 is worth $212 today. So even though the US government paid out over $100 in interest, due to inflation it was basically a wash, and they had 30 years to invest that money in infrastructure. Meanwhile, since $100 is not worth as much now, people in the same social class are likely now buying $200 bonds, so really the US is on the hook for the last $15 or so. In short, this “debt” was actually a good deal for the US government.

The short version is the government is fine as long as it can pay the interest on its loans without needing to print so much money to do so that it causes hyperinflation. You don’t have the ability to do that with your personal debt.

  • “I never thought leopards would eat my face.”

  • Almost everyone loves a good “cute pet doing something odd” story — especially when it involves a dog and breakfast. Recently, a video showing a dog’s hilarious and unexpectedly polite morning routine before mealtime went viral, prompting laughter, delight, and heartfelt commentary across the internet.

    AI slop. I stopped reading.

  • Nah. XP was huge when it came out because NT was so much smoother and more stable than the Windows 9x product line: it was nearly as stable as 2000 with a more modern DE than Windows 95-ME.

But Windows 7 did everything XP did bigger and better. It’s no shocker that all the Windows-like Linux DEs look like forks of Widows 7.

  • I’d hate being an NPC in the games I play. Especially since fiery deaths are often a loophole to the “no killing NPCs” rule.

  • On linux, you can do what you wish. You can use a desktop environment with a GUI software center that pops up a notification that prompts you to install updates. Or update by opening the software center and selecting the ones you want. Or use the terminal commands. Or write an alias so you can type “update” and have it execute all your commands in the right order. Or script it to run silently in the background on an automated schedule.

And you can use your computer during updates, there’s no mandatory update during shutdown/boot.

  • Calling women athletes “non-competitive” tells us what you think of women athletes.

There are competitive sports where gender literally doesn’t matter (like darts.) There are sports that require subdivisions within them to allow equally skilled athletes of different physiological builds to compete (boxing.)

The thing is, sports regulatory bodies were already making the decisions of how trans and intersex athletes can compete. To say that trans athletes should be kept out of all competitive female sports shows that you either have it in for trans people or you just don’t understand sports.

And no one yet has given a coherent argument for why the government should be involved.

  • Oh, I misunderstood. My apologies.

Hepatitis B takes 60-90 days to incubate. Because of the slow incubation, the vaccine works best if started within 24 hours of exposure, and can still work if administered up to 7 days after exposure. Newborns are typically exposed during birth, not while growing in the womb.

Compare to, say, the COVID-19, where the incubation is 2-14 days. The vaccine takes about 10-14 days to set in, so if you take it post-exposure in most cases you’ll be done with the actual infection before the vaccine even starts working.

  • Would you prefer to test your smoke alarms by:

    1. Pushing the “Test” button on your smoke alarm?
    2. Lighting your house on fire?

The entire point of the vaccine is to prevent the virus. If you wait until you’ve been exposed to the virus, you’ve defeated the entire purpose of the vaccine.
