  • Spend some time learning about ADHD. Maybe you will understand yourself better, but if not you will at least understand other people better.

  • It's a tool and has its place. For me it's currentl place is replacing Google searches about programming stuff. This is not to say the AI answers are perfect, they are just generally a better use of my time than Google results because Google has gotten so bad.

  • Important distinction is "Computer Science". My degree is "Software Engineer" and project management was a significant part of the program. We had a junior group project that started with our class doing a client interview of the teacher to extract what the project requirements where. I think a lot of people don't know that software engineer programs are even an option.

  • It can be challenging and the pattern of making goals and not hitting them can be frustrating enough that you just stop trying to make goals. These are some things I find help me get stuff done.

Social pressure keeps me focused very well, so I go to gym classes. Anytime I work out alone it is a struggle to not just bail early. So I will try to integrate social pressure into things that I find important.

Setting standards instead of goals. One example was me wanting to better understand TCP/IP networking. So I set a standard of reading the textbook I had on the topic 30 minutes a day. Some days I did less some days I only read a couple pages due to poor focus. But I just stayed focused on meeting the standard every day. I ended up reading through more than half of a very thick textbook with dense technical information. Way further than I would have otherwise.

Next is to set a priority queue. It's hard to focus on 10 projects. It is much easier to focus on a single top priority and not worry about the other 9 at all.

Last is be realistic about your limitations. It is easy to set your expectations based on your best days and beat yourself up on your crap days. Also I find my "Best days" are frequently me hyper focusing so hard I have 2 crap days after to recover. Some times it's not about what you "should do" and more about what you "can do".

  • I think it is more likely he stopped the "enhancement" because they have well know health impacts and he wants to live longer.

  • I immediately interpreted that as, "All that stuff you keep saying your going to do, just accept that your not going to do them."

  • The doctor on YouTube channel HealthyGamerGG has a lot of good information and has recently written a book for parents.https://www.healthygamer.gg/how-to-raise-a-healthy-gamer

As a person who knew I had ADHD (inattentive) since middle school but didn't get an official diagnosis and treatment until my late 30s, I would recommend exploring an official diagnosis and treatment. 2 reasons: 1) It might take you years to get a diagnosis and find an appropriate therapist. 2) I now look back and wonder if I could have done better in my life if I got treatment sooner.

  • Be aware if you have the iGPU as the only video output device and passthrough to a VM it will no longer show what the host system is doing. This would be referred to as a headless server. I would suggest making sure you can SSH into the host before doing that. LearnLinuxTV has guides for how to do that with best security practices.

Docker works differently, so it may not be an issue with that.

  • When you read files from the ZFS filesystem it will automatically keep the files in RAM. This is called the ARC and it is why people frequently recommend having a lot of RAM with ZFS. The ARC is very effective, automatic, and has no risk because it only caches reads. A cache drive is a secondary ARC generally using a fast SSD. The problem is that it generally only helps performance when you are reading lots of small files multiple times. This is because ZFS does so well reading large files from HDD that it doesn't make much of a difference.

In short: If you already have the drive and want to play with the feature, go for it. But if your going to spend money on the drive, you will probably be better served spending it on more RAM.

  • Well the problem seems to be eating without actually experiencing the act. So either that keeps going and they don't care or they start paying attention to what they are doing. It's a win either way.

  • The most useful thing has been grocery shopping. If you don't have calorie dense foods at hand then you won't eat them. Sure you can mindlessly eat an apple or two, but you will probably be full by that point. Also 2 apples is way less calories than any junk food.

Want stimulus when watching a movie, sit down with a big bowl of broccoli. Even if you eat all of it, that's like 100 calories.

  • I assume the cache drive is for your ZFS pool. You probably don't need that.

  • Shared interest and/or shared goals. Wanna have a long conversation with someone? Find out what they are passionate about and express genuine interest.

Warning: Now the challenge may become ending the conversation. lol

  • What about GiB?

  • You have missed my point. People are already putting in effort at their jobs. When they do get time to relax they don't want to be required to do a second job.

If this was a car community you would be telling me that everyone needs to know how to do their own oil changes. If this was a baking community you would say everyone needs to make their own bread. A gardening community would say growing vegetables.

These can be valuable and rewarding skills, but just because it is important to you doesn't mean it should be required of everyone.

  • You know most people play games as a fun leisure activity. Telling them that they need to do a ton of work just to participate is going to be a hard sell except to a relatively small group of people. That is a large factor in why so many people buy consoles.

  • I want to make sure I am understanding what you are intending to communicate correctly. At first I thought you were basically saying, "normies need to get good". But in reflection you could be attempting to say, "Linux advocates are communicating unrealistic expectations which lead normal people to frustration and disappointment." Or is your intent something else?

  • Imagine how awkward he must have been at the start.
