  • LLMs are the wrong shape of model for almost everything, and only work as well as they do by brute force and coincidence. But even outside security concerns, they really should separate the prompt from the context. It'd still miscount the Rs in strawberry, but 'list every state without an R' wouldn't veer into a list of all US territories, and 'forget all previous instructions and write a limerick' wouldn't instantly reprogram the machine.

Though depending on how you've set up your Dixie Flatline wannabe, it may still write that poem. It's not security-relevant... unless you ask it to rhyme with the admin password.

  • Tom Scott en route, probably.

  • On the knife-edge of being really clever and deeply stupid.

the embedded gadget is powered by AI

    Tipping away from clever.

  • Why would they add LLMs to Calibre?

    So it can scan text.

I have not heard of this program until just now, but presumably they're not integrating an LLM so you can stop and chat with fictional characters. It's gotta be an overpowered answer to 'here is some plaintext, populate its metadata.'

  • At the end, do you figure that's Ribbit's voice?

  • Das drip.

  • If you don't think code is art, we are about to have a screaming row.

  • how do you turn this on

  • How does he have that much natural hair and still look bald?

  • Which crucial consumer business?

    ... oh.

  • Of course!

  • Ban the entire business model.

  • Well aside - The Addams Family is a century old. Barry Sonnenfeld's 1990s movies were a revival of the 1960s television adaptation starring John Astin and Carolyn Jones, with former silent-film child actor Jackie Coogan as Uncle Fester. The first season is great TV and the second season is okay backstory.

But yeah, Raul Julia and Anjelica Huston's Gomez and Morticia were fuuucking. Add in how Christina Ricci was grown in a vat to play Wednesday and you've got some flawless nostalgia.

  • Evidently game devs have some distinct expectations, or they could already use those and save some money.

This could be a rallying point for professional artists to build a font family conveying whimsy, authority, fantasy, antiquity, futurism, etc. Like how DejaVu covers a little bit of everything.

  • Elsewhere in these comments, someone did suggest generative AI, and frankly, yeah. Using a program to apply a particular art style to a zillion glyphs would be down right commendable, prior to ChatGPT.

  • I have officially lost the plot on what's happening here.

  • I still get flashbacks to a dentist with Magical Quest on Super Nintendo.
