41·1 day agoYup. install the Orion Browser. It has adblocking built in. Then install the Piefed Web application from Orion.
Or, if you wanted phone wide, configure adguard dns: https://adguard-dns.io/en/public-dns.html

Technology@lemmy.world•First test flight of largest all-electric aircraft used just $5 of electricityEnglish
111·2 days agoThe first flight of the largest battery-electric aircraft to take to the skies lasted nearly half an hour while costing just $5 of electricity. That aviation feat comes at a time when jet fuel prices have skyrocketed because of the US war with Iran.

Europe@feddit.org•US strikes $1.2bn deal to pay German firm to halt offshore wind projectsEnglish
29·10 days agoThis is incredibly stupid. While China and the rest of the world are leading the charge in renewable energy, the U.S. is set to remain in the Stone Age due to pure hubris and short-term profit gains.
Paying 1.2 billion to get rid of that technology is just ideologically short-sighted. It’s simply stupid.

3·11 days agoBut everyone was hoping the next Mass Effect game would return to its sources, not continue the “My face is tired” series. But I was hoping too much.

Games@lemmy.world•Bloodbath Ahead For EA As It Looks To Cut $700 Million In Annual Costs Under Saudi ArabiaEnglish
7·12 days agoThat’s what I’m worried about. I played the Mass Effect Trilogy several times and they’re my all times favourite.
But this Saudi Arabia deal is not good for the industry because as we know, Saudi Arabia is a very conservative muslim country and it will destroy the creative process.

Technology@lemmy.world•FreeBSD Just Removed The Last Of Its GPL-Licensed CodeEnglish
86·19 days agoIn my opinion, I just don’t understand permissive licenses. For example, with FreeBSD’s license, companies can essentially “steal” the hard-earned efforts and use them to enrich themselves. For example, FreeBSD could have been a gaming OS, as the PlayStation’s OS is FreeBSD. However, they didn’t give anything back to the community.
Copyleft licenses, on the other hand, require companies to contribute any changes they make to the code back to the community so that it benefits the community as a whole. In this case, there’s no “stealing”, companies need to respect the community’s efforts by giving back.
That’s my two cents anyway.

Games@lemmy.world•Game Pass Was Supposed To Save Xbox – Instead, It’s Killing the CompanyEnglish
8·20 days agoIn my opinion, only PC and Linux matter. We desperately need Linux to succeed because it’s a community project. Yes, companies contribute to it, but it’s still a community project with no for-profit objective.
For many in the open-source community, contributing is an affair of love, not a way to enrich shareholders. We need this ecosystem to compete with console companies and Microsoft in the PC market.

Technology@lemmy.world•Big Companies Are Starting to Hire Again, Defying Predictions of AI WipeoutEnglish
31·21 days agoIn my opinion, AI is here to stay. But OpenAI and Anthropic will suffer because companies realized that don’t need a Ferarri all the time, they can do with a Honda (Chinese open-source models) 90% of the time.

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•NYT hiding information regarding a health related food recall behind a paywallEnglish
105·21 days agoDon’t downvote him; he’s right. The next administration should fund Voice of America (VOA) and PBS to provide free information. The NYT is a for-profit organization.
Long before the internet, we had to buy newspapers. I don’t like it, but that’s the reality of business.

Technology@lemmy.world•AI bet goes awry: Oracle fires 21,000 employeesEnglish
643·22 days agoChinese open-source models are becoming the norm. You don’t need the latest model from ChatGPT (e.g., a Ferrari) to complete your task. A simple Honda will suffice (open-source models), and it uses a lot less energy since it runs on your home or company’s infrastructure.
Because of that, I predict that we’re going to see a lot of financial hardship among AI companies.
