  • Might as well do the work and develop the alternative. If LMR is a workable chemistry we should use it. Nickel costs about 50 cents per ounce while Manganese is fractions of a cent.

  • Those who run immich, how have you been backing up your library?

My deployment isn't anything fancy, it is currently a Raspberry Pi 4 with a 2TB external drive for the photo library. Been running for more than 6 months with minimal issues. Now that we are at a stable release I need to get some kinda backup going for the photos themselves.

  • If I had to come up with a steelman argument for small "AI focused" systems like this, I'd say that the more development in this space, makes the cost of entry cheaper, and actually eventually starves out the big tech garbage like OpenAI/Google/Microsoft.

If everyone who wants to use AI can locally process queries to a locally hosted open-source model with "good enough" results, that cuts out the big tech douchebags, or at least gives an option to not participate in their data collection panopticon ecosystem.

  • Let's hope so. This should be my last Pixel if it all plays out like that.

  • When it came out, Dreamcast legit felt like it was from 5-10 years in the future.

  • Literally every EV with Google Maps integration gives you estimated battery remaining upon your arrival at destination, assuming you use the chosen route, accurate within a few percent.

  • And they wonder why some of us are still using local installed and firewalled Office 2007.

  • Doesn't seem like a good long term career plan to be a warehouse-store-sized fence for Jordans.

  • Bradbury envisioned a dystopia where it would be illegal to read books.

Huxley envisioned a dystopia where no one would want to.

Given recent survey data showing approximately 16% of people actually read books, I'd say Huxley was on point.

  • Bring back Crystal Pepsi, you cowards

  • Circa 15 years ago when (most) states had no mechanism to tax Amazon purchases at checkout, and prior to it being flooded with made-up vaporware Chinese brands, Amazon had "good deals". They would usually beat retail stores in your area by 10-15% and they didn't have to charge sales tax.

Those days are long gone. You can't even be 100% certain the legit branded stuff you buy on Amazon isn't fake. (Unless they've recently taken new measures to avoid stock mixing and prevent that.)

  • It would be a clusterfuck. Especially since the type of violence some have advocated for recently is more akin to political assassination. We need to push back on the false equivalence of "person X says stuff I don't agree with about perceived identities, therefore that speech 'unpersons' me, therefore it's tantamount to a death threat, therefore actual violence against that person is justified." You can literally find examples in these comments here.

If you have thousands of lonewolves each deciding unilaterally to assassinate (insert political opponent or public figure here) based on their own subjective perceptions, that no longer resembles a civil war, it more resembles a free-for-all hellscape.

I'd suggest a more useful concept is to form strong local communities committed to their own well being, mutual aid, and defense. Whatever that looks like for you in your area. Your mileage may vary. This is not legal advice.

  • I had a Gen 1 as well and had to stop using it a few years back because it literally couldn't handle the streams anymore. Not sure if the underlying compute became too intensive for it or what, but it would crap out, drop frames, freeze, stutter, and disconnect.

I switched to the "Chromecast with GoogleTV" (4K 2020 model). It has all the installable apps and crap, but you can delete and lock down a lot of the defaults, and I was also able to sideload SmartTube for De-Googled YouTube enjoyment.

  • Depends on your device and a bunch of other factors. If you are trying to maximize battery life you are generally better sticking to 60.

If you are consuming 120fps content or doing some kind of mobile gaming that actually supports it, you may benefit from 120.

  • This particular truck doesn't have to be a catch-all solution. Just give people more options.

Right now the North America EV market options are all very expensive, not necessarily in form factors people want to buy, and often privacy-invading or suffering from other "anti-features".

The more options available to consumers the better.

  • Nice. Bookmarked for future reference in case.

  • I had a T-shirt of this one back in the 90s. I believe it is the most well known Far Side comic.

  • Tostitos 'bout to enter the silicon production sector y'all

  • Here's the thing... Hyundai could be doing even better in the US but they kinda hamstrung themselves.

I went looking for leases recently and I was mainly interested in PHEV or full EV. Hyundai had inventory of the Ioniq 5 and while I think it looks cool and the battery platform is cool, it was a bit expensive and its form factor didn't really work for my needs. The salesman tried to show me an Ioniq 6, the sedan thing with the fastback appearance that sort of looks like a Wish-dot-com Porsche or Mercedes. Again, didn't really fit my needs.

He informed me that they make PHEV Tuscon (a more classic small/medium SUV form factor) but Hyundai made the strategic decision not to market them in the Midwest US.

Completely stupid decision. I am positive they could have sold thousands of those in the area I live. Hyundai missed a layup there.
