For serious comments, my true audience is the unknown reader. For jokes, my audience is myself alone.

Lemmy dev suggestions: Remove all downvotes. User blocks should keep the blockee from seeing the blocker.

  • Barclay would probably identify with a lot of that super toxic incel crap, which can be a stepping stone to extremism.

I know the character worked it out to some extent, but I wouldn't be surprised if it lingered.

  • The worst thing about the internet is that any moron can express their dumb, uninformed opinions.

The second worst thing is that I get to learn which celebrities are dumb, uninformed morons.

  • They're called integrals, so it should be no surprise that they're integral.

  • It sounds to me like she was sexually harassing him.

I am not bi, but I wonder if bisexual people didn't get the worst name for their sexuality. Because I suspect that most of them simply don't care about the other person's gender. I think they're attracted to the person themselves, regardless of gender. And now that people accept that there are more than two genders, the "bi" in "bisexual", meaning "two" seems overly specific.

But anyways, back to the example at hand, assuming that his type of "bi" means that he cares about other stuff more than gender, it's hard to imagine a worse way to come onto him than to do what that lady did. "I have a terrible personality, now let's see that hard dick."

  • Something you kinda glossed over in favor of knocking at the weakest part of my comment — my use of the word “nothing.” This tells me you don’t really care about understanding another viewpoint, you’re trying to score a point in the argument.

The weakest part of your comment? It was the first sentence of your comment. That's where people put their strongest point. The point that they want to emphasize the most.

And what's your argument without that point? That the question is only useful sometimes? That makes it like almost every other question the doctor asks. If it's sometimes useful, and when it's useful, it's very useful, then it makes sense for a doctor to ask the question.

Your argument is strongest if you can pretend the question about periods is never useful. I believe that's why you led off with the point. Because it was your strongest point and essential to your argument. And that's why I focused on it.

  • Maybe you're not offering them enough variety. Have you considered selling a chunky version?

  • "If you only have a hammer, then every problem looks like a nail."

But even then, I find it alarming that he doesn't seem to know about the internet, libraries, or even just books, in general.

  • I think there might be some argument that all fiction is fan fiction.

  • Do you think doctors should collect patient history assuming that patients will always give the least informative answers?

Here are some other possible answers: "My last period was 6 weeks ago," or "I am currently having my period," or "I am 3 months pregnant," or "A long time ago. I'm post menopausal."

Do you think the doctor would be able to know anything about whether these patients are pregnant? It seems like the question can actually give information if you don't assume the least useful scenario.

But I think we can all agree. If women only went to the doctor exactly 4 weeks after their last period, then it would be a useless question, like you say.

  • We don't know the exact circumstances, but CBP stands for Customs and Border Protection.

I've heard of Customs agents demanding people let them search phones without a warrant and without probable cause, and so foreigners can be refused entry. We probably all heard the story of it happening for a person who had a meme of JD Vance on his phone.

But the article says that this guy is based out of Atlanta, so I'm guessing he's a US citizen. I'm not sure they can refuse entry to a US citizen based on this.

Either way, you should never give permission to anybody to search your phone. Maybe you've broken a law that you didn't know was a law, and you've just handed the evidence over to the police. Or maybe you have evidence that can convict somebody else who didn't know they broke a law.

I don't know what this means for people crossing the US border. Now is a bad time to enter the United States.

  • "Oh, Mamdani could be violating the Constitution? Which part? Actually, please give us a quick overview of the structure of the Constitution, maybe just one sentence on each Article and each Section, and each Amendment, and then when you get to the part that Mamdani violated, make sure to let us know."

  • Here are some neat reading materials on menstruating: https://ourbodiesourselves.org/subject-area/menstrual-cycle/p2

Okay, I'll play along. But you failed to link an article, just a list of articles, so I'll have to pick one.

Hmm... This one looks good, "The Menstrual Cycle":

Menstruation is the first part of the cycle. It begins when your ovum (egg) from the previous cycle does not get fertilized, meaning you did not get pregnant.

How odd. You said that "the last period date has nothing to do with whether someone is pregnant or not," and then to prove it, you gave me a link that says the exact opposite.

This reinforces my theory that we are not speaking the same language.

  • Not just something to do with it, a whole hell of a lot to do with it.

You might as well say that clouds have nothing to do with the rain.

  • And yet the last period date has nothing to do with whether someone is pregnant or not.

I am unsure how to communicate with a person who would say that unironically. We may not be speaking the same language.

  • I guess the point is that either way an undesirable gets removed from the group and you wouldn't have to play with that person anymore. Only, the undesirable might be you. Seems to work as intended.

  • I wonder... you know how webpages use widgets to try to see if you're human? Apparently they collect various data about how you interact with the webpage to figure out whether you're human. Perhaps they could use that data to make a fingerprint that can tell people apart. It maybe would be fairly inaccurate, but combining it with other information like IP address or location information could work together to make a better digital fingerprint.

  • Those fishing boats aren't going to blow themselves up.

  • Is that backfiring, though? You decided that you don't want to play with that person, so if they are a package deal with other players, then you're going to lose all of those people no matter what you do.

If you'd rather suffer the one bad player than lose the other people, then you need to understand that dynamic before acting unilaterally. You know, it's a social thing so you need to actually talk to people.

  • In the case of the comic, she's in the ER, and it's possible that she might need anesthesia for surgery, so I think that's a case where pregnancy is directly related.
