  • Its not that it wouldn’t exist, its that the current form is shaped by the profit incentive. The fact that is a useful technology doesn’t mean that the AI we are being forced to use is like that due to a capitalist mode of production. Coding help may be useful to a point, but its only so thanks to a massive level of compute power that wouldn’t be available under a reasonable mode of production.

I wholeheartedly diasagree with the idea that a socialst world would have gone with this as a priority to the point of making it something like what we see know. Would it be developing it? For sure! Would it have anything related to its current most extended use cases? No way.

  • I somewhat agree with you, the tech is amazing. But I also think that the current shape of “AI” is what it is due to a massive unsustainable investment directed in the vast majority by ill intent. The technology would not be what it is today without it being used for what is hated for. If you “fix” the hated parts then it becomes something entirely different to what it is today, if anything at all.

I think that the perspective that the tech is is hated because its trendy looses weight very rapidly when you realize that it would probably just not exist if not for the insane power-hungry assholes that are shoving it down our throats every damn day.

  • Let me start off by saying that I am, by no strech of the imagination, a superstitious person. Neither is my partner. We are usually very quick with explanations of why some weird shit might have happened. A small analysis of the conditions around an event always allows us to arrive to conclusions. Now, with that out of the way, let me tell you something the I swear is 100% real.

Some years ago, my partner and I went to a small appartment in a coastal town. It was nice but supper small. Like, “single space, bed had to be pulled down from the wall”-small. So we spent the time we were at the house in the same space. It was really great, though. We have two dogs and there was a small patio with wild grass that they could hang out at. We are also pretty fond of going out and taking hikes, so a small appartment only meant less space to clean at the end of the week. It was also furnished with some taste. Decorations like vases and paintings of the area, a small but practicall kitchen and some closets to prevent everything from ending up in some chair.

Some nights in, we arrived after a long hike. It had been very nice and we were extra cheerful. We had sex, and after a shower, we prepared some dinner and went to bed. Not too late, to be able to go out again in the morning. We were both pretty tired so we turned off the lights and fell asleep pretty quickly.

But shortly after, like ten minutes in, two things happened. Both could be easily explained by chance, random things happen all the time. The problem was the fact that they both happened virtually at the same time.

We were woked up by the light being turned on all of the sudden. Keep in mind this was your typical super small loft, so it basically had one set of lights that illuminates everything. It was not a nightstand light being turned on. We had like half a second to be all like “what the hell just happened”. Because, basically at the same time the lights went on, a vase started falling the ground from a bookshelf on the other side of the room. This meant that, after that half second, the vase crashed loudly into the ground.

Suffice it to say, we were scared shitless and barely slept that night. Thankfully nothing else happened during the rest of our stance. Otherwise we would not have finished the week there.

To this day we’ve thought of multiple possible reasonings: the lightswitch might have been only half pushed; the vase might have been already close to falling; maybe what woke us was actually a loud thump on the wall from the neighbors and we just saw the aftermath… This last one being extremely unlikely since the switch was next to the bed and the vase on the opposite side of the room. In any case, we still remember it laughing (now), and we still have not the slightless clue of why the fucking ghost of the former owner wanted to mess with us that night.
