  • Only if Microsoft acquires a major CPU chipmaker. There has to be a lot of vertical integration under one company, the way it is with Apple products. Otherwise there are other OS like Linux that comprise enough of the market to ensure there will always be an unlocked BIOS option.

  • Nope. Only two.

  • You can do all that and more with an off-the-shelf mini PC running Linux. No need to reinvent a general purpose computer from a router. The chain of trust thing is above my paygrade, but I bet something like that exists.

  • Where they banned in all their various applications? Because I had a scare when my 2-year-old granddaughter found a box with a magnetic latch and the magnet had been torn out. We thought she ate it. But after scouring the area we found it, and it's a thin neodymium magnet. Went through the whole house making sure boxes like that were out of her reach.

  • Sounds like your SD card is defective. Try a new card.

  • Not as tough as it seems. People routinely memorize much more in shorter periods. Try learning the complete Kanji (Asian Pictograms) or heiroglyphics. It's not inconceivable to memorize 10,000 random words. Think of how many songs you can recite the lyrics to. I learned Billy Joel's, "We Didn't Start the Fire" in a day. That's pretty much what this challenge is about - a random list of words.

  • People have been doing this without AI for a very long time, even before computers were a thing. All AI did was make it easy.

Genie is out of the bottle. All we can do now is make it illegal to possess or distribute, the same way we handle CSAM.

  • Start by defining your available power. How many watt-hours can you generate? A small 100W solar panel can provide an average of 400Wh of energy per day in the winter. That's more than enough to run a 10-inch tablet 24/7 and LED lighting at night. I've seen 360W solar panels for under $100 on the used market. That's a couple of KWh a day. Even a 100W bicycle generator and a 30 minute workout would power a tablet for 8 hours.

If power consumption is that big of a factor, perhaps separate devices for video, music, and reading would be beneficial. A dedicated music player can consume less than a watt. An e-paper reader requires fractions of a watt.

I have a folding 100W panel, a 30Ah 12V LiFePO4 battery, and a charge controller that I use while car camping. It keeps all the electronics running for a group of 4 without relying on a noisy generator. The battery is big enough to compensate for a couple of rainy days.

My backpacking setup is a 15W panel and a 30Wh battery. That kept my phone and flashlight charged for 2 weeks on the Pacific Crest Trail.

  • Impossible when events like Tienanman Square are the outcome in some countries. It only takes one to upset a global unionization apple cart.

  • Once we stopped being regularly exposed to pathogens associated with raw unrefrigerated meat, we lost our immunity.

Think of it like traveling to a country with low water quality standards. If you drink the water, you get cramps and diarrhea. The locals have immunity and their babies have immunity because antibodies to the pathogens are passed in mother's milk. That gives the babies enough immunity to avoid illness when they start drinking the water. Frequent subsequent exposure to the pathogens maintains their immunity.

But if a person with immunity moves to an area with higher quality water and then moves back after many years, they can experience intestinal distress from the water because they lost their immunity.

  • Die without an estate and tell your survivors not to claim your body. The government will take care of your final disposition.

  • It would no longer be the world-view destroying event that it would have have been 100 years ago. The moment someone came up with the idea of a matter-energy transporter, we had the idea of how someone could come back from the dead. Today we know exactly how it would be done - we just lack the technology.

  • Why not just buy a sensor without the IR filter? They aren't expensive. Or use an HD security camera that doesn't have one? If you remove the filter from a phone's camera, normal picture quality will suffer.

  • I don't think most people realize how dependent we are on undocumented workers. Wait until it becomes illegal to hire them and INS roundups start again. Then the carwash price goes up, the daycare closes, or the landscaper goes missing. Maybe the snow doesn't get plowed or the restaurant prices go up because they can't find cheap kitchen help. Construction-related companies will be decimated, and the cost of home repairs/remodeling will skyrocket. In my area, electric rates will increase because half of the crews that keep the vegetation trimmed back from the power lines are undocumented.

They'll come for the employed undocumented workers first, because they can make it illegal to hire them, just like it used to be 50 years ago. No green card, no work.

  • Damn. That would be me!

  • My GF worked for a thrift shop, and when I picked her up after work she was admiring a 2 foot statue of Venus that had just been donated. So I bought it for her. That evening she was cleaning it up and noticed the wooden box at the foot of the figurine was hinged, but locked. I opened it with a bent paper clip and inside was a bag containing - a butt plug and anal beads. Then we figured out that if you twisted the head, it pulled a dildo out of the body.

  • I took a standing desk and placed it over a treadmill. Lost 40 lbs in the first year and have stayed at my target weight for 3 years, mainly because of the walking exercise. There's a sling chair that I hang from the ceiling for when I prefer to sit. But a slow walk is how I spend most of the workday.

I will never go back to an office desk. No more back pain or stiff neck. No danger of blood clots or sore feet from just standing. The health benefits have been amazing.

  • There's no doubt that US sizes have become more generous. Size measurements have increased over the years by about 2 inches. A size 10 from the 50's fits like a size 8 today. A medium shirt is closer to a large from 70 years ago.
