  • The index is there (the NTFS file system maintains it automatically) and is fast (as programs like Everything Search demonstrate)... Windows Search is simply not using it anymore, probably so it can shove sponsored shit in the results, or maybe due to lost knowledge due to lay-offs.

  • Yes, but no.

    The NTFS file system does maintain an index, and software like Everything Search or WizTree can use it to produce almost instantaneous results (probably faster than back in the XP days, even with larger discs).

    The problem is that Windows Search stopped using the damn index for some reason (probably to provide sponsored web results and whatnot instead of whatever you were looking for).

  • Just get Everything Search and you'll be able to search just as fast as you could in XP, and with no Bing spam messing up the results.

    Funny¹ thing is that Everything (and similar programs like WizTree) can be that be that fast because Microsoft's own NTFS file system has a built in file index, which is what Windows Search used back in XP; the search programs practically don't have to do any work, NTFS has already done it for them.

    Of course, though, that'll give you the results you want, not the results Microsoft wants, which explains the change in later further enshittified versions of Windows.

    When both Israel and Iran immediately violated his unilateral ceasefire (to the surprise of no one but Trump) he saw his prospects for said Nobel price, which he already considered in his pocket, evaporate, which explains his tantrum.

  • Also in very short races (up to 100m) if the human is an olympic athlete, though mostly because momentum is a bitch and it takes time for the horse to accelerate all that mass, and by the time it's done the race is already over (it also probably helps that the athlete knows what they're doing while the horse is just along for the ride and wondering where it can get some grass).

    They're probabilistic text generators, not AI. They're fundamentally incapable of reasoning in any way, shape or form.

    They just take a text and produce the most probable word to follow it according to their training model, that's all.

    What Musk's plan (using an LLM to regurgitate as much of its model as it can, expunging all references to Musk being a pedophile and whatnot from the resulting garbage, adding some racism and disinformation for good measure, and training a new model exclusively on that slop) will produce is a significantly more limited and prone to hallucinations model that occasionally spews racism and disinformation.

    Sure, you can kill one human. But next thing you know your whole species has gone extinct, or worse, has been domesticated into pocket yappy dogs that can't breathe properly.

    In places where we've been around long enough staying away from humans has practically been bred into every surviving predator's instincts by now (which is what makes polar bears so terrifying, they're about the only dangerous predator that doesn't have this instinct yet, and probably never will, now that murdering whole species has become a bit of a bad look); anything that considered us prey and didn't learn not to simply doesn't exist anymore.

    Wolves in particular (in the few places where they survive) definitely know not to mess with us, except maybe in the frozen depths of Canada, and so do most bears (again, with possible exceptions in the least populated bits of North America) except polar ones.

  • I'd never heard of it, but after reading about it it looks like basic depressive Hollywood drama slop with some anti-cochlear implants¹ and anti-metal music² propaganda and the usual “learn to be happy with the cards you're dealt” conformist bullshit³ mixed in, so no thanks, I think I'll pass, I'm already angry enough without having to suffer through this sort of shit.

    1.– Sure, cochlear implants kind of suck when compared to working ears (though maybe not so much when compared to somewhat working ears with tinnitus), but someone born deaf won't be able to tell the difference, having nothing to compare, and at least they'll warn you when a car is honking for you to get out of its way (and, frankly, quite often at work I wish I could just unplug my ears and plug in some music, so they've got their good sides too).

    But we weren't talking about cochlear implants; we were talking about CRISPR. We were talking about giving deaf people proper working ears. Nah, fuck that. If we can do that we can do better. Give everyone who wants it the ability to hear as well as, say, a dog. I, and lots of people, would pay good money for that.

    2.– Seriously, what the fuck. Have we learnt nothing since the eighties satanic panic? American religiosity and so-called morals are a fucking cancer on global culture. Keep that fucking shit to yourselves, if you enjoy wallowing in each other's misery that much.
