I've seen just a few that I suspected were AI, wouldn't be able to prove it but they had that vibe--they were personal stories where someone describes something that happened and ask for people's opinions about it. Some of the lines were very typical AI-cliche sounding to me, and the situations didn't seem like something that would really happen . So I wouldn't accuse the OP of pasting slop in for the entertainment of watching people argue about some made-up situation, but I also wouldn't reply to them either. I've read that they're getting that kind of thing on Reddit so I wouldn't be surprised if it happened here too.

God forbid we finally get rid of DST and save people from car wrecks, industrial accidents, and heart attacks if it makes you have to adjust offsets once in some software.

That's how it should be of course. Problem is businesses and companies still follow standard business hours and make their employees show up at the same time no matter if DST is in effect or not.

Yeah given a choice, I'd rather have light after work instead of before. Unfortunately when I lived in Montana, the winter days were so short that I went to work in the dark and came home in the dark. The only light I saw was going outside during lunch break.

Or more likely, you live in the northern US, or Canada. The further north, the more extreme the length of the long and short days are, which explains much of the split in whether people want to go with standard or DST when debating this.

The idea of having narrower time zones, say by adding a new one, is an interesting idea to mitigate the large difference in how people experience the time zone based on if they are at the east or west edge. Shifting the existing ones around would only change who is affected but not how many.

This is the most reasonable approach, and it meshes with medical studies about how DST affects our mental and physical health. We don't need sunlight until 9 or 10 pm, and the sun is supposed to be approximately overhead at noon, not 1pm.

Yeah I saw a map like that illustrating how which side of your time zone you're on makes a big difference. I wonder if adding another time zone so they're all a bit skinnier would help with that aspect of it.

The problem is that if you're far enough North, the days are so short that if you work full time, no amount of clock-adjusting will keep you from either going to work or going home in the dark.

Exactly! Why does no one ever consider changing the time they do something instead of making the whole country adjust to time change? I know with schools, maybe their starting times are geared to when parents have to be a work or something, but surely they can figure out how to adjust their particular schedules around their particular needs and leave the rest of us alone.

I read that some senator was working on a bill to permanently switch to half-DST, which is where we set our clocks to halfway between regular time and DST. I've been advocating for that forever so I hope it will at least get people thinking/talking about it. It should solve the argument between whether to permanently stay on one time or the other. Split the difference and just get it done already!

Hey downvote if you want, but I just felt it should be pointed out that everyone should be on guard when using these things, even if you're not lonely and even if you do have a good support system. Some of the victims did have close friends and family who saw warning signs and tried to help them. Yes, some of them started using the chatbots because they were lonely, but others started using them just for the usual things like designing a plan for increasing housing, or helping them with their business, and they still got sucked in.

Yes! Especially Tatiana Maslany. You'd almost swear those parts were played by different actresses! The whole show was so good.

Of course, but that doesn't contradict what I just said. Anyone can be susceptible to this psychological manipulation tool regardless of if they are lonely or not. This can't be waved away by blaming it on loneliness. The blame lies on the companies that know how to capture and hold people's attention and reel them in, not on the victims.

James Talarico wins Democratic primary for US Senate in Texas

Appearances can be deceiving. From what I've read, Talarico seems the more progressive of the two. If he wins, we'll find out--the system is entrenched and hard to buck for anyone, until enough more progressive members are there to form a coalition with some power.

But I have no doubt that no matter what, he'll be vastly better than if the R wins. I'm much more worried about Platner turning out to be a Fetterman/Sinema than I am about Talarico.

Come on, this is so overly simplistic. There are plenty of lonely people who don't get sucked in and plenty of people with friends and family around them who do-not being lonely is no protection. I read about another one on Lemmy today, a man with a wife and friends, who still got sucked into delusion.

Sure, there may be cases where loneliness is a contributing factor to wanting to use a chatbot, but to say that lonely people are somehow less capable of distinguishing reality from fantasy or more susceptible to succumbing to psychological manipulation is wrong and could give a false sense of security to the "non-lonely".

After all, everyone thinks they're immune to falling for scams or frauds until they find out they aren't. Or that they don't fall for propaganda or get manipulated "the algorithm" on social media. Chatbots are very similar. An algorithm designed to keep people hooked and paying to spend more time using the 'service'.
