feddit.org's Zionist bar problem: community ban(s) vote

    Jump
  • as @ice@lemmy.dbzer0.com suggested: go to .ml and criticise the CCP on how they treat the uyghur population. this place has enough tankies, that you won't get a warm welcome.

i will not entertain another discussion about whether uyghurs are getting their human rights violated. i know it first hand, but highly encourage anyone to do their own research. i am not saying, that you did deny it. but criticising CCP (or USSR) tends to summon tankies, which cannot stomach it.

you acknowledge, that the usa spends quite some money pushing their world view. it would be naive, to believe china, russia, israel and any other bigger power wouldn't do the same. so yes, be careful of reports / stories / users which lean a bit much this or the other direction.

  • our anti-zionism rule follows the same fallacy, as anti-semitism laws in many european did: it is too narrow and too broad at the same time.

it is too broad in a sense that we talked about banning problematic users. now we talk about banning communities, which cover much of a language. dach is a big collection bucket for europeans speaking german. in their sidebar they mention, that they want to keep palestine / israel discussions out of the comm - which is fair play IMO.

it is too narrow in a sense, that it is hyper focussed on one issue. zionists are bad and commit atrocities, which need to be harshly reprehended. but there are many bad things, which do not get caught by this rule. as an example: what happens to the uyghur population in china is simply not ok. still .ml is an instance, which quite openly denies that anything even happens. yet we are not discussing banning accounts and or communities, which do these things.

i would much rather have an anti-discrimination rule, which covers zionism, racism, sexism, discrimination on hair colour, medical things, ... this rule should also define what actions we can and want to take again who and what.

this would cover more problems, while not excluding anyone. hopefully also reduce needed arguments.

  • thanks

  • can someone doing 3D printing take a look at the pictures? i have no idea about these things, but it looks like the ears would be some crazy overhangs.

from the reflection of the light i assume, the statue was printed bottom to top. so how did they manage to do the ears?

  • lots of people already pointed out tools to (kind of) dry run locally. they are great to figure out cryptic error messages.

however, if you have issues with the complexity of the whole pipeline, it is usually easier to just execute the whole pipeline. for that we have the branch prefix cicd/ and treat these exactly as main/master and develop (except the very last deployment step). that way we can see where a whole pipeline will go. and when it is finally doing what it should, we can squash it before merge -> have a nice history.

  • thanks for pointing to that issue. i dont know how piefed devs reacted to this. so i will give them the benefit of the doubt: it could very well be a quick and dirty solution, never meant to last long.

as the lemmy devs showed, it does not have to be like this at all. but i haven't seen that much oppinionsted and defensive actions from the piefed devs.

  • you are confuddling some things here. nazi germany was germany under nazi leadership. and you will be hard pressed to find anyone giving them support.

however, germany and its people very much have a right to exist. which they do today.

israel state is under zionist leadership and is doing horrible things. however, saying that all israeli people do not have a right to have land or even exist... is quite close to what zionists say about a different group of people.

  • 🤬🔪🤵‍♂️?

  • to everyone so worked up about bricks on the 25th floor:

if you search for '1412 broadway' (which OP mentioned multiple times) you quickly find 'Elsie Rooftop' bar. which, in fact, is on the 25th floor of 1412 broadway. on opentable, you find this picture of the bar:

which shows, that there are bricks on the 25th floor of 1412 broadway. and that there is a structure in the background, which looks quite similar to what OP posted.

is it proof, that everything about OPs picture and small description is genuine? no! is it enough things that matches, so that I believe them? yes! especially considering that this would be a weirdly well constructed forgery for some internet points...

  • Some say Alduin is Akatosh. Some say M'aiq is a Liar. Don't you believe either of those things.

  • no idea if this still applies. but a long time ago i would still dualboot and thought i was smart: 2 smaller exchangable system disks (linux & windumb) + 1 large fixed data disk. during some windows updates it would make the data disk bootable and put its fucking bootloader on it.

i would get a blue screen while booting linux and the joy of removing a boot partition on my data drive.

  • which one of you took a picture of my jellyfin server?

  • i don't know activity pub well enough to say what is possible to do on it. i was just saying what would be cool, to avoid tyrading users, based on what sometimes seems to be one or two votes.

IMO vote spam is just buildt into lemmy. spinning up your own instance and pretty much nuke any post, user, community, ... you want is not that hard. i thought of writing my on POC for a 1 click script like that - but did not end up doing so, as i was too lazy.

i guess that is my main motivation behind being against easily accessibly insight into votes: most ppl are too lazy to do it themselves. it is good to know anyone can access it. but they have to put a little effort into that.

you and i will probably not agree on that, but that is fine.

  • FOR

Yes the data is available to anyone, but at least it involves some technical prowess.

The amount of times i have seen people discuss some users votes and what they interpret into it is just weird. let them at least dig for the stuff a little bit.

from a privacy standpoint it would be great, if the data could even be hidden from admins. while still allowing to do some verification (like in these governance threads). but that is a problem for the lemmy devs.

  • do you remember, when advertisement was OK? i used YT for a long time without adblocker. there where funny animations on the side of the video, a mildly annoying bar at the bottom with an easily clickable close button. Youtubers where funny, edgy and talked the way they wanted.

i think advertisement that way is OK: sometimes slightly annoying but it paid for the Youtubers and the platform, while not influencing the content.

  • i like lemmy a lot. i also like that piefed seems to have better mod tools (at least i am told so). as one of the many people who lost their lemm.ee account to mod burnout, i think the important thing is what you like to work on.

if you can only support one plattform, choose the one you like better - i will most likely follow db0 for its governance.

if you can support both platforms and have fun doing so, i don't see a downside in it.

  • what you are describing is mainly driven by the stock market. 'investors' want to buy raw materials / shares / options / NFTs / whatever you can buy. preferably one day after that, they want to sell it for 100% profit. this causes things like CEOs, which jump into a company with the single goal of rising share prices for the 1-2 years, before jumping ship. not caring a bit about the longevity of the company.

to say capitalism will regulate itself is about as naive as saying that the comunist dictator will give you the things you need, while never taking more for himself and his friends.

that is why capitalism can work - embedded in a comunist state. no, not whatever china is doing. you need the pink glasses version of capitalism to drive innovation and competition. at the same time the pink glasses version of comunism to ensure social security and the freedom for creativity.

if i want to open a coffee shop in my neighborhood. but there are already two of those in the my small neighbourhood. communism sais the needs are already met, therefore i am not allowed. capitalism sais the market is already saturated, therefore noone gives me a loan. i like the freedom to do my own mistakes, so i choose the capitalist system and open the coffeeshop with my own money. to get people to actually come, i need to setve better coffee, cheaper coffee or offer something the other two don't.

if i am a software developer and have that idea for an amazing FOSS project. A socialist state covers my base needs and i can work the whole day on the project. hopefully everyone can profit from that work in the future, free of charge.

so yes: business and politics need to be separated, just as church and politics where many years ago. but the idea stands: let capitalism be free. a business without any more growth but consistently paying the salaries of its employees and keeping up with the time is a good thing. but its oversight needs to be a socialist state: social security reliable and generally ensured healthcare. so noone falls between the cracks. go further: conditionless base income, so people can work on their passion. noone should earn more than x times his lowest paid employee (1:12 was a thing a while ago?).

the motivation of having more is still there: i want a good job / profitable business. but if you replace all your employees by AI, that is fine. Because your earnings skyrocketed you pay a good amount more towards welfare. some of the people you let go might even enjoy the time and finally work on their passion project.
