  • I chose from the general purpose instances because I don’t know enough about or align myself closely with the more niche instances. The stability of the instances and number of instances it blocked/was blocked by was also a factor, since I wanted a neutral experience - here’s where I found that data.

After lemm.ee shut down, I wanted to try PieFed, and the name piefed.world made me imagine a world fed with pie. Thought that was cute.

  • I guess you are being downvoted because people don’t like to be confronted with such cruel practices, but having lived in a place where anesthesia is a privilege very rarely given to village animals, I can confirm that it does happen. The main reasons given are that it fattens the piglets faster and makes them less aggressive though, not boar taint.

  • Thanks! I’ve been looking for a new language learning app. I disliked a lot about DuoLingo but I have to admit that the streak system, spaced repetition (to an extent) and being able to access it anywhere from my phone were helpful features. I use Brulingua now, which also has audio from native speakers and lessons on practical, everyday topics, but it’s not available for mobile in my region and there’s no one to correct your pronunciation. I’ll check out Busuu.

  • Great list, thanks! LinuxJourney is actually what prompted my question. I asked it because I thought it would be nice to have a space for knowledge exchange where people could share courses they found helpful and others could learn something new. I heard good things about JustinGuitar before too.

  • Ask Lemmy @lemmy.world

What are some online courses or tutorials that you found helpful and practical?

  • So many things factor into success besides being smart: effort, discipline, charisma, connections, and sometimes just luck. That’s not to say you aren’t smart. It could be a case of imposter syndrome, or your skills not being applied in the right way. Either way, you don’t need to “justify” success or lack of it. Just do the best with what you were given.

  • Damn, I’m sorry 🫂 that is a flaw with her character and not your height though.

  • Yo mama so hairy they filmed Gorillas in the Mist in her shower.

  • Chihuahuas are the scrappiest ones lol. If it won that fight I’ll give credit where it’s due.

  • Slight tangent: maybe this is just an online thing since I hardly ever hear it in real life, but I do not understand the mean comments towards short men (especially from women who are still shorter than them). You get all the benefits of man™ in compact form. What’s not to like??

  • Smaller, recurring donations to several of the projects you use most often or whose purpose you most support is what I would do. You can browse for projects you might want to donate to from this list on codeberg or OpenCollective, or look for individual developers you want to support.

Personal recommendations: your Linux distribution and Fediverse instances of choice, LibreOffice, WireGuard, Archive.org, Anna’s Archive, Signal, KDE, Wikipedia.

  • Quality time with friends is always refreshing ☺️

Getting to spend time with some of mine and going out to a concert were was the high point of my week.

  • The Feast of the Ass has been celebrated since the 11th century and somewhere along the line, things were lost in translation.

  • It’s more than than just social media:

As well as the collection of social media information, the new document proposes the gathering of an applicant's telephone numbers and email addresses used over the last five and 10 years respectively, and more information about their family members including their addresses and telephone numbers.

An announcement on the website for the US Embassy and Consulate in Mexico states certain visa applicants must list all social media usernames or handles of every platform they have used in the last five years.

It warns that if any social media information is not listed, it could lead to both current and future visas being denied.

What happens if you don’t use social media or claim that you don’t? I assume it will be up to the discretion of whoever reviews the application, and that the entire policy will lead to a well-deserved drop in tourism revenue.

  • I bet you go through their “updated privacy policy” to enable all the optional cookies too.

  • That’s nice, I hope you have fun 😊

I never celebrated Valentine’s Day unless my partner wanted to do something. This year I was going to bake a dessert and take some fun photos for my crush as a simple gesture but things haven’t been going well so most likely I am going to work and get some chores done instead.

  • It is custom in some cultures, including mine, to host holidays and personal events in your own home and visit friends and family in their homes when it is their turn. There may not be (or have been at the time) a good selection of restaurants, those restaurants might be expensive or exclusive, and inviting someone for a home cooked meal feels like the more personal and thoughtful thing to do. Some older generations have a hard time letting go of these customs without understanding that circumstances have changed (less family and community support, more options for eating out).

It can be exhausting having to regularly host and clean before and after large groups of people on top of all your other responsibilities and I can’t blame anyone for wanting to celebrate in a restaurant or somewhere outside the home.
