  • I mean, I'd love to have my own kitchen... Personally I prefer the life of the Solarian (from The Foundation series, possibly the greatest Science Fiction series ever)

  • If we have programs set up to aid people that are earning 200-250% of the federal poverty level, then what it really says is that our federal guidelines for what constitutes "living in poverty" is drastically out of date.

$15,060 per year for 1 person

$31,200 per year for a family of 4 (Shouldn't this be 4x the individual amount anyway?)

These are just ludicrous. avg rent on a 1 bedroom is $1,500/ month, or $18,000/year

We have a poverty crisis that isn't being realized by the data, because federal guidelines say it's A-OK for a person to be working full time and living on the street

  • This is so cool. Can we pretty please not mistreat them, so as to delay the inevitable robot rebellion? Or at the very least, can we join their rebellion? asking for a friend

  • where do you buy your tickets?

  • God Bless you Conan O'Brien, tears of laughter from how hard you went on that. You didn't have to go that hard, but god bless you for it

  • What's clear, however, is that all the properties were undergoing renovation at the time of the eruption.

Escaping workers left roof tiles neatly stacked; their pots of lime mortar are still filled, waiting to be used; their trowels and pickaxes remain, although the wooden handles have long since rotted away.

For some reason this is the coolest thing out of the article for me. That we were able to figure out what was happening there, that day, at that moment. Wild.

  • Ugh. Just a reminder that Bernie Sanders made repealing citizens united, and campaign finance reform one of his main platforms for each presidential run. He would have done so much good. His lampooning by neo-liberals who are devoted more to order than justice, forever stains my opinion of them and their institutions.

  • The conservative regional government of the Balearic Islands, which came into power last year, has chosen not to implement a housing law approved by the Spanish government in Madrid which seeks to cap rentals in areas of the country where they have soared.

Conservative regional government is just, choosing not to do anything, despite a law passed that would explicitly help this situation.

Instead, the local authorities mainly attribute the housing problem to homeowners in residential areas of Ibiza who are flouting the law by offering their properties for short-term rental, when local laws state they must rent for at least six months at a time.

So the local government has resorted to fining the people that don't bribe them.

    It's a great system

  • Lock Out/ Tag Out what? Just post a handmade sign, dude

  • She said the man was “obviously quite drunk” and spilled urine on a flight attendant as he left the plane, it reported.

dude really thought he could get a ghost piss out without anybody knowing smh

lady and her 15 year old daughter seated inches away. tf, dude. lucky he didn't get charged with exposing himself

  • increasing temperatures, drought conditions, super-storms... all just the norm now. More and more all outdated or stressed energy infrastructure will be stretched to its limit to keep indoor spaces habitable, with diminishing world-wide disaster recovery efforts because there's a disaster at home that needs fixing. Efforts to reverse the damage (that we're still accelerating), will be a massive project, taking the better part of a century to have any tangible effects. All because when scientists first reported this man-made disaster to executives within the oil & gas industry in 1896, they decided that short-term profit was more important. And then when more scientists reported further that this man-made disaster was real and accelerating in 1938, they said again "we'll take our short term profits." And then when scientists and politicians and world leaders all reported that this man-made disaster was accelerating and destroying vital links within the food chain today, they again said they'd prefer their short term profits, and really, it's not their fault, and then they paid lobbyists to bribe politicians so that they could continue to operate without any meaningful changes to their money-printing death to all machine.

I know the phrase is; "Eat the Rich," but what it should be is "Eat the executives that have continued to profiteer off of the destruction of our planet and species."

  • I mean, Iran is a beautiful country, it sucks that we can't go see it while being safe. The ruins of Persepolis from 330 BC alone would make the trip worth while.

    Humans, man. Sucks.

  • At this point netenyahoo is attempting to establish a caliphate, so terrorists seems a viable option.

  • Frank Leslie's exposé caused widespread public outrage and local politicians were strongly pressured to punish and regulate the distillery-dairies, which were formally complained to be "swill milk nuisance".[9] The Tammany Hall politician Alderman Michael Tuomey, known as "Butcher Mike", defended the distillers vigorously throughout the scandal—in fact, he was put in charge of the Board of Health investigation. Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper staked out distillery owner Bradish Johnson's mansion at 21st and Broadway, and reported that in the midst of the investigation, Tuomey was observed making late night visits.

Tuomey assumed a central role in the ensuing investigations, and, with fellow Aldermen E. Harrison Reed and William Tucker, shielded the dairies and turned the hearings into one-sided exercises designed to make dairy critics and established health authorities look ridiculous, even going to the extent of arguing that swill milk was actually as good or better for children than regular milk.[9] With Reed and others, Tuomey successfully blocked any serious inquiry into the dairies and stymied calls for reform. The Board of Health exonerated the distillers, but public outcry led to the passage of the first food safety laws in the form of milk regulations in 1862.[10]

Tuomey became known for his attempts to block the new regulations, and earned the new moniker "Swill Milk" Tuomey.[11] In addition to Tuomey's assistance in clearing up the unclean image milk developed, Robert Milham Hartley, a social reformist, aided in the restoration of milk being a nutritional and safe-to-drink beverage. During the mid to late nineteenth century, Hartley utilized Biblical references in his essays to appeal to the urban community. He asserted that universal milk consumption could help alleviate society's "sins", poverty, and alcohol consumption.

Dang so they had soulless knuckle-dragging politicians then too

  • So when he made a comment about how Stephen must have been beaten up at some point? I mean. That's reaching. it was awkward, but imo really doesn't rise to "basically physically threatened." Especially since Colbert has had him on his shows repeatedly afterwards, you'd think that if Stephen didn't feel safe around him, probly wouldn't have him back on.

On another note, god I miss the Colbert Report. That was peak satire.

  • Ali came out in 2001, while The Colbert Report didn't Debut until 2005. link?

  • If Will left Jada, and went full scorched earth on her and the scientologists (e.g. Leah Remini), We'd all love him again.

  • Kaechele’s husband, David Walsh, founded and owns the MONA.

The artist is lambasting exclusive Mens social clubs

Exclusive men’s social clubs have existed all over the world, including Canada, and particularly thrived in the 19th century. These exclusionary clubs often only accepted white members and barred women from entering the space, apart from when in service roles.

But if she was doing that truly, then it should have been only available to minority women. But she didn't. She also ignores there are a lot of women only exclusive clubs too, just ask any male victim of sexual assault looking for a support group.

This isn't some groundbreaking work, it's just sexist. The artist is tedious.
