Brazilian Catholic. Autistic. I was a far-right theocrat until about 2009, when I started a gradual leftward conversion. I now sympathize with Marxism-Leninism, but am still getting up to speed with feminism and gender equality. Please have patience with this newbie.

    Regarding model size: when you write "32gb", I hope you either mean 32 billion parameters, or (since you wrote lower case "b") 32 gigabits. Or do I actually need 32GiB VRAM?

    For privacy: before I spend a large multiple of the Brazilian monthly minimum wage (electronics is expensive here), I would like to experiment with hosted solutions. I will try to remember to restrict hosted LLM to non-sensitive code. But I still don't want any leakage to US Big Tech. I fear they can correlate lots of individually non-sensitive stuff and make a profile of me. I will only use Chinese (hopefully we will have great Brazilian models in the future) models, so if they are secure (good encryption, quick patching of vulnerabilities, etc), I should be safe from US profiling. So out of the Chinese hosted coding agents, which have the best security?

    Regarding accuracy, I am aware LLM cannot be trusted to be correct. But the more accurate it is, the less correction it will need. Less iterations too. And actually, sometimes I don't now the subject well, but if the LLM is reasonably reliable, I can just check the answer for obvious erros, then accept a moderate risk of error (if the impact is small).

  • How do you stay up to date on LLM? Do you recommend a web feed (RSS, Atom) for LLM news? My interests:

    • Models from BRICS countries
    • Models that can run locally on a GNU/Linux desktop or laptop, not necessarily my current laptop. I currently have only 4GiB VRAM (previous message was wrong), but in the future I could buy a stronger laptop or even a desktop that I access over network.
    • Model accuracy
    • Effective and responsible use of LLM. I used to be almost Luddite about LLM. I have recently relaxed this restriction, but I still think LLM should be used with care because of privacy and accuracy problems.

  • I am new to communism and may have picked a misleading verb (accelerating the colapse), but I don't see myself as an accelerationist. I don't hope the US accelerates its decay into fascism. I want the US to economically collapse ASAP. If it collapses economically before it decays into fascism, the World will be better off. And Trump's incompetence is doing a fine job at that. Also, I do not think he is overall more inhumane than Kamala. He is probably worse for trans people, but Kamala is just as bad as Trump for many other groups (including Palestinians being genocided), and is even worse for Ukrainians and Russians. Kamala is not democratic, she only has better decorum and acting abilities.

    • Trump is visibly evil (like Hitler), and pretty bad at administration (worse than Hitler I suppose). Trump is like a very stupid Hitler.
    • Democratas are competent and cunning like Palpatine.

  • This post is intereating, but If I wrote the meme I would not mention aliens. It invites comparisons with certain empty-headed New Atheists that have a fixation on aliens. In my experience, some of them whatch every "science" fiction show involving aliens but read little to nothing about real science.

    The typical New Atheist is far more motivated by anti-religious hate than love for Science.

    Note, I am aware that atheism is much larger than the New Atheism lunatic cult. My dad (died from pancreatic cancer) was effectively an atheist. He simply avoided (and, rarely, criticized) religion, because it lacks evidence and because there are so many competing ones.

  • I am new to communism, so take this with a grain of salt.

    Here in Brasil, the strongest leftist party is the Workers' Party. Communist Ian Neves and other communists condemn it as socdem. Yet Ian Neves strongly criticizes Trots who supported Dilma's unfair impeachment and Lula's imprisonment. He has also explicitly opposed accelerationism, because it leads to fascism which can make workers' lives miserable (bad in itself) and effectively crush communist movements. But I do not apply that reasoning to the dispute between the GOP and the "Democrats".

    In Brasil, Lula has grave defects (bourgeois concessions), but he is far better than Bolsonaro or Tarcisio or any other neofascist, and much better even than the old supposedly civilized neoliberals like Fernando Henrique Cardoso.

    In the US, would Kamala Harris be considerably better than Trump? She would have far better decorum, of course, but Palestine genocide would probably be just as bad as under Trump (as it was under Biden). She would murder Venezuelans just as mercilessly. She would give even more weapons to Ukraine. She would persecute American dissident students and leftists just as hard. All that with more competence and way more effective theater of pretending to defend democracy and human rights. McCarthyism and imperialism are bipartisan.

    The only advantage I see for a Kamala victory would have been less hate and attacks on trans people. A big advantage indeed, but in my opinion that wouldn't justify defending Kamala. Leftists should vote for a real socialist party, organize, and build mutual aid. I am an ignorant cishet male, so take with grain of salt.

    Anyway, you mentioned voting for the PSL (which is praised on Lemmy), so probably we agree on substance, and I only miscommunicated on the previous comment. I don't see myself as accelerationist.

    Lula's party is the Workers' Party. It has many internal "tendencies" -- unsure about the best translation. Many Brazilian communists condemn it as socdem. However, at least Breno Altman supports it. Altman is an experienced, competent communist journalist.

    PCdoB is allied with the Workers' Party. It is accused of being only nominally communist, but it does have Elias Jabbour, a brilliant expert on China.

    PCB, PCBR and UP are communist parties without any (that I know) elected politicians, but they feature famous and competent communist militants like Jones Manoel, and have strong youth wings. I saw the UJC (União da Juventude Comunista) in both protests I recently attended. It is the youth wing of PCBR or PCB. The "UJC" name is under dispute by these two parties because, sadly, they have recently split.

  • Could you please elaborate? I am Brazilian. Living under Trump certainly sucks acutely, but for people like me outside the Empire core, it seems to me he is doing (through incompetence and dementia) a fine job of accelerating the Empire's collapse.

    1. Kicking Hitler's corpse is a cheap way to pretend to care for human life, without improving anything. But fighting a present genocide could actually prevent it. There might also be pushback. The adage: liberals oppose all wars, except the current war.
    2. Europe and its successors (like US and Australia) genocided many red, brown, and yellow peoples. Hitler was meant to genocide slavs (not fully white) and especially communists, but escaped the leash and killed too many French, Jews and other whites.

  • I didn't see the offending comment, but, generally speaking, forgiveness is cool. I myself caused a struggle session when I lectured Hexbear not to show disrespect on Pope Francis death. Then I edited that comment when I realized it was dumb.

    I got disappointed for causing trouble but at least it was a learning opportunity. Recent Popes may have generally nice words, but sweet talk can hide grave evil. Malcolm X comes to mind.

    Here in Brazil, for example, some priests use their big influence to indoctrinate the faithful into far-right lunacy. Both the Church and the State ought to punish these criminals, but AFAIK neither do.

  • Rationally, the US would never attack China, but the US is no friend of reason. Education is already bad, and is having budget cuts. Trump is dismantling the department of education. Intense religious fanaticism shows itself via creationism, recurrent moral panics (Satanic panic, abortion, LGBT phobia etc). Racism. Political extremism. Intense obscurantism and scientific denialism. The secretary of offense is covered in tattoos glorifying the Medieval crusades and wrote a book title "American Crusade" explaining the US is in a holy war against Islam and China.

    I fear the US might hate China more than it loves itself. I hope it implodes before catastrophe.

    Honest question. I would like to know a bit more. I don't like religious political power, but Israel and US are far, far worse than Iran. I would much prefer it had a secular government, but I love Iranian comrades as they are.
