  • A true anti-anti-fascist. If only there was a simpler name for that, but nothing is coming to mind.

  • My servers are one NUC clone and a 4*16tb NAS. I have a lot of docker containers running constantly and yet cooling has never really been an issue for me. A larger concern is I would rather not see it, so It's hidden it under furniture. The fans on the NAS have attracted a layer of dust, and one day I might clean it. Kidding. I wont.

My security team involves a bull dog named Sophie, who has never done more than lick any other being, but I'm banking on burglars not knowing this.

  • Agreed. This sort of thing works well for when there is something difficult to visualise like maps of a warzone or how a budget is being divided. All it does here was make the article harder to read.

  • Ooooh I would not be throwing that stone in such a glass house. Has Australian Coal ever released their donor list? As far as I can tell, they have not.

  • Courting foreign influence from the opposition undermines their case and doesn't project the sorely needed leadership from the LNP. Not a good look, Sussan Ley.

  • I say it’s like reddit when it was smaller and less obnoxious. If they inquire more, I discuss federation by describing email. I mostly try to sell that people are nicer and you start to know your netisan compatriots. I haven’t been successful in convincing anyone to join as far as I know.

  • I got banned from a subreddit because the mod had this "not with us, you are against us"argument. It was years ago, but IIRC I was posting against a comment calling for assaulting men to balance out the abuse of women.

To be honest, I think I may have seen more banning on Lemmy though. I've noticed a few cases where the admins have banned people with objectionable opinions. In all fairness, these were the type people you would avoid at parties, but it does give me pause. In reddit if you get banned from a particular subreddit you still keep your identity and participate in other subreddits. In Lemmy, you are at the mercy of your server, and if a large server bans you, it would essentially remove you from all of their communities that otherwise might accept you. I worry that this is creating an echo chamber.

  • I don't mind smart products, though I'm not sure what problem is solved by a screen on a fridge. That said, I do hate it when these devices need to rely on the cloud to function, and Ads I can't tolerate--I usually try to block the DNS address for things that like to spy on me or show me ads.

This sort of stuff damages the Samsung as a brand. It makes me unlikely to consider Samsung for other products like TVs.

  • This wasn’t a jut trial though, he pled guilty.

I suspect the reason a jury was chosen for the study was simply to find a cohort that was lay to the legal professions but still intimidate to a particular case. The lack of a jury doesn’t mean this still isn’t relevant, since it relates to the perception of fair sentencing among the public.

  • I read this yesterday and just can't shake it. It's so fucked up.

I try remind myself of a study where members of the Australian public were asked if sentences were too lenient. The same question was asked of jurors from the actual court case. The results were that the public was far more likely to have the opinion that a sentence was too lenient where as the jury was more likely to believe it was appropriate. Normally considering this helps me take a step back from being outraged; Those who are closer to the case have considerations that aren't making the paper.

This case has to be an exception though. I just can't fathom how the judge arrived at such an abhorrently lenient sentence. This can only prove to indigenous people, and the family of the victims they don't matter. I really hope there is some review on this sentencing to prevent this in the future.

  • I’ll add it to my linked in profile to warn potential coworkers.

  • I think that’s a pretty good response. More details will probably emerge in the next few days that could change my mind, but for now that gives me a bit of confidence in their platform.

In comparison, a few years ago I was a patient at an IVF clinic in Sydney. I saw some absolutely bonkers security and repeatedly raised it with them. They wouldn’t hear it, and almost expectedly they were hacked and now my sperm count is public information. Their response was delayed and appalling. If my medical records were treated a severely as a streaming platform, I would have been happy.

  • I'm not 100% sure. I consider Dune closer to a space opera than Ender's Game. Dune is has a lot of soft fantastical elements over detailed physics. Enders game also has a few fantastical elements, like instant FTL, but it so neatly fits in military sci-fi and I would describe it that way. But these are mostly my own biases, rather than any deep considerations.

  • My understanding is a space opera is where space serves as a backdrop or theme to the story, as opposed to hard sci-fi where the the science is more forthright. Space operas focus heavy on character development and adventure, that just happen to be in space.

  • I get the frustration, but I don't think its fair to direct it at tourists. I don't believe for a second that the protestors aren't at times tourists themselves, and it's hard to see what directing abuse at random tourists visiting for a week, with no emotional investment or control of Spain's rental system, could possibly achieve.

Airbnb has been allowed to run unregulated in pretty much every market. Naturally this hurts areas where tourism is a major industry more than others--so again, I get the frustration. But geez, channel that back to people who can actually fix it rather than yelling at foreigners.

EDIT: Sorry I should add, I'm referring to not just this piece of graffiti, but also the similar posts that seem to appear on lemmy every few days.

  • Oh wow. A young Churchill was assaulted by a suffragette with a horse whip. This sparks joy.

  • I have an LG OLED from about 8 years ago, and I do some rather pronounced burn in. I was also rather careful about leaving anything fixed on the screen. I have some friends with a slightly newer panel and they too have burn in. So maybe lucky? Or maybe your generation of panel is less susceptible than mine.

That said, I’m about to renovate my house, and when I’m done I’ll consider buying another OLED panel. Worth it in my opinion.

  • Thank you
