The problem as usual is that you’re tied by the other people in the place, i cannot leave whatsapp as not only my family but pretty much everybody i know uses it as their main communications platform, no one actually gives a shit about the software or platform but all remain because they cannot leave behind other people.

Same issue with FB/IG, people stay because their whole social contacts stay. If something happened that made everybody leave at the same time there would be no issues, OR if the walls of the walled gardens were torn down so that people could freely leave without losing contact.

About the only realistic way to abandon these platforms is to leave and just accept losing contact with people, which is a gamble that doesn’t always pay, most of the time you just end up isolating yourself from others.

Very much so, but it’s no harem, it’s a huge found family, and it’s fun!

Nah, there’s always going to be bots in any public network, it’s normal, should be fought and all but there’s always adversarial individuals, we definitely should find who’s this Nicole person and get them to stop this crap, but you’d be surprised how NORMAL it is to have anything on the public internet under constant, 24/7 attack

Wrong use case, the expected one is friends and family watching stuff on your Jellyfin server from different homes, potentially through mobile, all with dynamic IPs

I note that a good portion of these are commercial products, frankly I’d trust MUCH more a FOSS product than a commercial one after so damn many over the years have betrayed us all in the search for profit, if you’re gonna migrate to something you may as well go for the FOSS ones that are less in danger of enshittification (not a guarantee but far less of a chance since a fork kills all the walls around a walled garden pretty quickly), even if the FOSS product is not as polished.

The objective is not “perfect”, but “better than what we have”, there’s probably no way to get to perfect today within some niches, but there’s still chances of improvement
