  • No matter which way you want to spin this narrative:

    1. American ICE agents put Korean citizens in handcuffs and ankle restraints
    2. multiple people were detained in a single cell, and denied Miranda rights and consular access
    3. the Korean government is taking this seriously
    4. multiple billions of investment and lots of jobs were/are on the line.
    5. talk is in the wind to relocate this investment (and hence the jobs) either to Mexico or Canada

Overstaying a visa in Korea would absolutely not land you the same treatment, but go ahead with your whataboutism. You keep digging that hole 'Mericaints. Eventually you’ll make it to Korea.

Hyundai deliberatly endangered the.welfare of their employees

Any company sending employees to the SHITHOLE COUNTRY that is the USA is obviously endangering them.

    Fucking QED.

  • While I’m happy to acknowledge that these are, in fact, troubling times, the notion that we should not have and adhere to standards is nonsense and wholly divorced from other countries have or do not have similar ones.

    If we don’t

meet climate goals few countries will actually meet

Why should we meet human rights goals that other countries do not? Why drive on this side of the road if another country doesn’t? Why have any arbitrary set of standards AT ALL if we can just toss them out because some other asshole demographic decides they want to shit on the world? It’s such a bullshit argument: my moron boomer parents were saying the SAME DAMN THING about emissions standards when times weren’t tough, so that holds absolutely zero credibility with me.

ZERO POINTS AWARDED. The same bullshit was being shoveled around during the fucking Obama years (and the Bush ones too, I have a long memory for this) and it’s not like he was hostile to his trading partners.

  • I’m from the 90s Internet. Geocities. Tripod. Webrings. My awesome gothy co-worker staying late after work to update her vampire fan-fiction site because hardly anyone had a computer and the boss let her use the company’s windows 95 machine.

We are categorically lazier as a culture now than then. I expect things to enshittify further until we collectively take responsibility and accountability for our own culture, engagement and entertainment online. As we used to. We need more stupid web tricks, this place used to have all sorts of public art and weird monuments to human quirkiness.

Until they take away from us the ability to purchase a 10$ domain, use DNS, and make HTML forbidden knowledge, anyone can be out there contributing. I realize, however, that most will not; I’ve recently started getting wide eyed stares of amazement because I have my own domain and use it for my email address, so we seem to be sliding further…

Not sure how we fix this.
