  • You mean you don't just trust the AI summaries?

18% or 21% sounds like a lot of people. Not an easy problem. :-(

  • I check on this. So first thing I found, literacy rates and average reading age are different things. Literacy rate, able to read at all, is clearly tracked and both countries are like 99%. Reading age seams really mushy. If you can get some numbers, please share!

  • Also, it won't always be them. It will be a repair shop. If things were built to be repaired, it would be quicker and cheaper to repair them.

  • So we hear. But the world is not America and this is a British newspaper.

  • Good luck with that. GrapheneOS only support the Google Pixel right now.

  • I'd rather see it finally fixed to be a fully functioning democracy. The party duopoly was always risky. A PR system with many parties is far more stable. Make it so new parties can come and go. So there is always real choice. It helps keep the nutters from getting absolute power. The UK could fall to nutters next election because of our insane FPTP system.

  • Also, that isn't the only source of information. There are a lot traffic cameras, and speed cameras just need a comms link. Probably other stat sources than these.

The market isn't really able to function right now.

  • There is a "network effect" competition problem with that view.

Also, that isn't the only source of information. There are a lot traffic cameras, and speed cameras just need a comms link. Probably other stat sources than those.

We want a functional market for SatNavs, and we don't really have it.

  • I fear we need to get governments to force competition to be allowed. Phones are a hell scape duopoly and Google are closing the nose. This isn't a thing to fight just with tech, we need to be fighting politically. Though all I do is a monthly payment to OpenRightsGroup for over a decade. Politicians, like most of the population, are completely unable to perceive the problem. If it was cars or TV or something else physical, they would get it.

  • My bank for work is super uncool. It requires the app to even auth web access on your desktop. The app refused to run on LineageOS despite the tricks I tried. It will run on GrapheneOS, for now. Why is it legal to block phone OS flavours??

The other gotta is navigation with traffic info. OrganicMaps is great, the maps are lovely, but without traffic into, the routing just keeps failing me badly. I need an open satnav with traffic info. Traffic flow should be open access, but it's all wall gardened. Least in UK.

  • That was one of the things that forced me from de-googled LineageOS to GrapheneOS. A compromise without being compromised. I'd like to run a proper Linux phone, but the bad apps forced into my life isn't going anyway, and less and less with run on a freed Android phone. The problem is political not technical, too many of us nerds are fighting the wrong front. (Partly, because the political from is too much human interaction to face.)

  • As ex-Sony Mobile AOSP manager, you got any extra insight into problems coming? From the outside it looks like a storm is coming.

  • 101 : Don't create data you don't want in the wrong hands.

  • TVs, cars, smart fridges, in fact "Smart" anything.

  • GB "News" is a blight on the media landscape. Calling itself "News" but says it is just "entertainment" so doesn't have to follow news standards. That needs to drop them in a world of trouble. They need to be made an example of so we don't get more of that.

  • I'll never hear, or read, that phase the same again!
