  • Neurons are much more sophisticated than transistors. A neuron can have multiple connections and can provide a range of values. Digital logic is all yes/no. I'm not sure we even can build something that mimics a brain with current technology.

  • I think the issue is you assume it will be enforced universally. It won't. It will be dependent on the makeup of the district and the color of the individual voter. It will be up to individuals at polling stations (and any ICE present) whether 'exceptions' can be made for people that are 'obviously citizens but forgot their ID'. Or whether a married woman's name mismatch is an issue or not based on her skin/hair color and way of speaking. It's going to be selectively enforced, by design

    Generally the correct answer is, it's complicated. If you're arguing something is black and white you're probably privileged enough to have never had to make one of these decisions yourself. Do I want ICE to exist? No. Do I want all conservatives to die? Also no. What's more, people have all of 2 seconds to make these kinds of decisions and generally fall back on their training, which is to render aid first and figure out the rest later. Personally, I like that that's what their instinct is, and I'm not going to give them shit for it

  • Yeah I think what's missed is that there weren't a lot of long form podcasts like that at the time. It was great to be able to hear someone like Sean Carroll come on and talk about Spacetime for 3 hours and then have Joe convince him to start his own podcast, which is still going and really dang good. Joe served as the interested but uninformed audience to just kind of keep the person talking. Not to defend what it's become, but it wasn't always like it is now

  • Mate I'm not arguing with a Christian. And I've been one, trust me they ain't got any poetry that compares with the awe inspired by the existence of galaxies. And lol at certain animals on a particular planet doing particular things with their genitals be vital gears in the machine. On this planet alone there are (and have been) so many different forms of sexual reproduction that the idea that the human way is somehow more important than any of them is laughable.     Side note. The absolute incomprehensible scale of the universe is part of what helped me see through the cult bullshit I grew up in. Hearing the poetry of Carl Sagan spoke more to me than any patriarch. Just because you're not inspired by the Cosmos doesn't mean others aren't either

The issue with God is people are arguing that it is not just a human invention, but in fact that humanity is an invention of God. Which is in direct conflict of our scientific understanding of the world around us which leads to a variety of issues. I have no idea what point you're trying to make. Is it that made up things can have real influence? Sure, I don't think anyone would disagree. But the difference is I use all sorts of things humans made up, I know they made up, but they are useful. If I started to argue that currency has existed since before the dawn of the universe you'd say I had a mental condition

  • I think the all or nothing mentality is really holding a lot of people back. I know I can't do that kind of thing personally and always build my habits slowly. Want to go full veg? Give up one animal a month. Want to learn woodworking? Add one new tool (and only one!) each project. Want to run every day? Start with once a week and build. Also don't get all flustered if you miss one. Just do it the next day, don't consider yourself defeated and give up.
