  • The leaf was an especially bad case, as they went with “air cooling” for the battery, so if you live anywhere where summer temps get over 95F or so, you’re killing the battery every summer. Arizona or Florida would kill them super because it’s so hot for so long. I believe they went to liquid cooled in 2019.

    9 years is beyond the life of most vehicles in places where winter road salt rusts out frames. So most people consider a nine year old car past its useful life. I’m assuming these people you know live in a warmer climate where salt isn’t used. Yes, you’re going to have problems if there’s no support for your older car. A lot of EV buyers are banking on 3rd party battery recycling/rebuilding becoming a thing. It’s an industry that’s just getting started, and we’re in an awkward place currently where it’s only offered in a couple places or you’re spending ridiculous money in freight. All of that is to say, if you’re buying new or gently used now, you’ll probably be fine in 10 years as that industry grows. But I wouldn’t buy anything used that currently has battery issues.

  • The problem is you have comp sci majors who learned .Net or Java handed react, so they do their damndest to turn react into .Net or Java.

    I have seen many travesties committed in react and angular from people trying to turn them into what they know instead of letting them be good at what they are.

  • There are a dozen or more cars out there, crossovers and SUVs are what marketing tells them to make. That and dodging fuel efficiency requirements. Take a look at Fords entire lineup, EV and gas. The only car is the Mustang.

  • Tesla S, Tesla 3, Fiat 500e (kind of), polestar, lucid air, Bolt, focus ev (didn’t make many), ionic, Taycan (if you’re rich), etron gt, bmw i7, genesis g80, EQS.

    I probably missed a few, and possibly a couple of these are hybrids, my memory isn’t perfect. The point is there are plenty out there, and some are very affordable on the used market.

  • Yesterday I would have argued that with the rails framework Ruby is a great way to rapidly develop a scalable application. Today I started having an intermittent failure in one of my API instances and when searching about it the only thing I could find was one obscure blogpost that boiled down to “yeah sometimes Ruby Ave active record just screws up the character set off a string” exact same string, different results. Excuse me Ruby? How the fuck can you sometimes screw up a character set? There should be no sometimes to any thing here.

  • The US government of yesteryear recognized a problem, so they drew up legislation intended to improve fuel efficiency, and thus reduce emissions. But they recognized that certain trades required large vehicles that could never be that efficient. So they built in a loophole for vehicles over a certain size not counting towards the requirements being placed manufacturers. Manufacturers being the crafty hogs they are realized if they just increased the size of everything they wouldn’t have to follow any of the rules. Now you have a company like Ford that only has one actual car ( a muscle car at that) in its lineup. Everything else are trucks suvs and crossovers.

    The government of today could rewrite these rules to make the loophole require business licenses or something else, but half of them refuse to see there’s a problem at all, and half of what’s left are in the pocket of the problem makers.

Even if you have people checking on your place, what are they going to do differently other than know sooner?

  • If there are reliable and fast chargers every 50 miles you’ll have several choices in that 300-400 mile range and we already have plenty of cars capable of that. The goal is not to have everyone stop at every charger. But to allow more people to drive how they are most comfortable and maybe even enable more cars to road trip.
