  • The only thing in this list that I relate to is the masking, so I'll address that

Yes, we all conform and hide parts of ourselves in public, doesn't mean you can't "be yourself".

As I understand it, when a neurotypical person is hiding parts of themselves, it's something like "I don't want anyone to know I'm into Taylor Swift". So just don't talk about it. It's that simple. For me, I have to think about every word I say because no one interprets things literally. If someone asks me whether or not I like Taylor Swift and I want to answer in the affirmative, can I just say yes? Or do I need to take note of the day of the week and say no while gesturing wildly with my left hand when it's a Monday or look 15º to the left from Wednesday to Friday? When we talk about masking, it's that, applied to every single sentence coming out of your mouth. Comparatively, never talking about Taylor Swift is a trivial task.

  • Then I don't understand your argument. I thought you were saying that since any definition needs to be grounded in the gamete type which is binary, then any definition would necessarily also be binary.

  • These are the same individuals that would be ignored by science unless it's a study specifically on these people. And if they happen to be the subject of study, the resulting paper would be defining the vocabulary they use.

  • A bit that can be 0 or 1 is binary. A quantum bit is not binary, even though it's a linear combination of 0 and 1.

  • I too adhere to the laws of physics

  • I guess that kind of makes sense. I think to me, migration falls very low on rankings of needs, let alone giving it status as a human right. It isn't necessary for survival unless you're already deprived of food/clothing/shelter, which I do consider to be human rights.

  • Increasing the tax rate at the upper income and wealth range would be ideal, I agree. I especially like the simplicity of it. But I don't understand why you think that's acceptable while an exit tax isn't. What is it that makes one a slippery slope but not the other? Tax rates/laws have been eroding to favour the wealthy while screwing over the poor. So the solution should be to fight to get it back to a good state, right? Shouldn't it be the same for anything else?

  • Pretty much everyone uses these clickbait titles regardless of whether they give good advice or not. I briefly followed a "finance guru" who does similar stuff with his thumbnails/titles and he just repeats variations of the same advice in every video: 1. Time in the market beats timing the market, and 2. diversify your investments. So far, this has worked out very well for me for the past ten years, but who knows if it's going to continue trending upwards.

  • I don't understand the argument here. We have a version of this rule that we don't like, so let's not implement a different version that we do like?

  • It's on par with a well paid software engineer or a doctor. Maybe I'd call that reasonable rather than low.

  • The fluff could also be intentionally placed red herrings for anyone trying to identify them. I'd certainly do the same if I were in that position.

  • I think you and shalafi might be using different definitions of "gets to choose". Using a depressed person as an analogy since I think this is better understood: You don't get to choose to be happy, but you can choose to take steps towards getting help so that you can better manage it. It sounds like they're talking about the former while you're talking about the latter.

Similarly with stigmatization. It's one thing to stigmatize acting on your suicidal ideation. It's another to stigmatize having suicidal ideation in the first place.

  • No one's disagreeing that it's wrong and needs to be addressed. The disagreement is on whether pedophiles get to choose who they're attracted to. This is an important distinction because firstly, the origin of their thoughts/actions determines the course of action necessary to keep it in check. Second, shaming someone for something they can't control is one of the most effective ways of discouraging treatment. Third, that wasn't a preface. It was the answer to the question they responded to.

Regarding suicidality: I believe that the approach of stigmatizing and criminalizing was often taken in the past and found to be ineffective. I've been seeing a big movement towards more open dialogue and encouraging treatment in the past decades.

  • What's the argument for having equality of outcome? I don't think I've ever encountered anyone in support of this before.

  • I don't understand how that comment was excusing anything. They explicitly said that it was inexcusable.

  • I'm aware. I have a Tangerine account. I just don't have access to those near any of the places I frequent. Wealthsimple seems to refund ATM fees (I haven't tested this yet), but then I can't deposit cash.

  • If I didn't need to handle cash, I'd have closed my accounts with the big 6 ages ago. It's ridiculous that they charge fees for the privilege of giving them your money. Online banks are where it's at now.

  • Can you use that gift card anywhere? If yes, then first convert it to cash. Your parents may be covering all your expenses, but they still need to buy groceries. The next time they do, ask them to use your gift card and give you the equivalent amount in cash. Now you have more flexibility to do whatever you want with that cash. Buy something nice, save/invest, etc. You have plenty of advice from others on this already.

  • It's not clear from the article what this "AI use" actually was. Did they sell the game using major generated assets? Did they use it to design the art but then replace it with something identical but made by a human to avoid the "AI" label? Did they use it to create a dirt texture to use on rendering the ground during development while waiting for their artist to create a proper texture?
