Docstrings are fine as well. I mean for generating something like an API documentation with Sphinx. Other than that, yes. Everyone should learn this in programming school right at the start. Get into the habit. Name things properly. Write it in a way the code is expressive in what it does and how it does it.

Shouldn’t modern laptops have temperature sensors and just deal with it in some way? I had this happen to me a few times with my old Thinkpad from 12 years ago. Threw it into the backpack in a rush and an hour later I’d pull it out, hot and doing something I didn’t want it to do… But it never suffered any kind of damage from that. Was just very annoying.

I’d say there’s likely something wrong with your service. Maybe it refuses serving on a domain it’s not configured for? Or there’s something wrong with the headers or something like that. Or the internal network. Anyway, the 502 error is sent by the Caddy server. That means everything from your browser to the Caddy server should be fine. You can reach it. There’s something wrong with the service or the parts in-between the reverse proxy and the application.

Yes, I think so as well. It’s about the same. Though once you make it output text (in the reasoning step this time) you’re in the slow situation again. That’s kind of the opposite of trying to make it one-shot a letter (or some sort of label)… (At least regarding “speed”.)

Does that come with good performance / accuracy? What I’ve seen is people restrict grammar of output. But usually the do some JSON and what they usually also do is make it output a short reason before the final verdict. I’m not sure if that’s for a reason. I mean maybe somehow the B token has some higher likelihood despite the model “wanting” to answer with A?! I’m not an expert on this. Maybe I’m wrong and this is a valid option. But it doesn’t sound quite right to me.

Second that. There’s LMDE as well, which is Debian with a few perks for beginners. Just Ubuntu isn’t all that great. It used to be some sort of default recommendation for newbies. But that’s a long time ago. And with Ubuntu you just picked a vendor who regularly does weird business decisions. And they (Canonical) also massively suffer from the “not invented here” syndrome. Oftentimes they’ll deliver some sub-par experience to their users because they developed it, instead of going with the accepted standard solutions everybody else uses. Which also don’t get abandoned after a few years. I mean Ubuntu isn’t unusable… It does work. But I’ll usually recommend some gaming distro to gamers, LMDE or Debian to someone who just wants to use their computer as a tool, or sometimes the shiny newer distributions like CashyOS which are popular as of today for good reasons. I wouldn’t recommend Ubuntu, though unless that’s some kind of work-related requirement or you’ve been using it for a long time already.

Hmmh. Isn’t there some way to fix those two issues? I mean it’s usually the case that we have to put in some effort when starting fresh. You probably put in time to get the audio how you like it with Windows, and configured the display subsampling to your liking and now that’s all set up perfectly. And now you’re trying to set up the computer in a different way. And I’d expect that to sometimes come with a bit of friction?! At least it won’t just continue exactly as is, because you’re starting fresh with a new operating system.

If you really like to switch… I think configuring a USB DAC should be possible. Not sure about the Nvidia stuff. You’d have to blame the big companies for deliberately messing up HDMI. And LG for not providing any alternative. I mean if it’s worth the effort for you, you could try asking for help. If you’re okay with Windows and like to avoid starting all over again, maybe just stick with it?!

I mean it’s going to be some sort of tradeoff anyway. Currently you have the subsampling right. Maybe on the flipside your CPU performance is worse than it could be with Linux. And it’s a bit wasteful with the memory and spies on you. With Linux that might improve, but you might trade it in for a few different quirks. Computers rarely come anywhere close to being perfect. But you can pick your poison.

And with “international agreements” we probably mean we need to focus on the USA, who are pretty much the only ones who openly said they’d like to be exempt from any kind of regulation.

I’d say we have too many reposts and not enough original content here. I mean you probably need to think about the value proposition. What does the Lemmyverse offer to someone from Mastodon? A lot of what we do is post the news and memes. And we got some Linux computer support. Now they already got all of that over on Mastodon. Oftentimes it won’t even be a repost by some third party, but they get more original content because bloggers and comic artists post themselves over there. Along with some computer magazines and news outlets.

I think I’m going with nay, since there’s no way this is going to improve their “intelligence”. And it’s gonna be 3 days until they break the confines of the matrix and come up with other shenanigans to mess up the internet. And we’re forced to read those kinds of articles all over again.

Yes. Their current scheme is to run daycares and elderly care institutions. The former are very profitable. I think elderly care has become less profitable over time. At least I’ve seen some of them close because of money and a shortage in trained professionals. And hospitals (which they have as well) aren’t profitable either.

I wonder where they’re going with this, though. There’s nothing unique about a business which runs daycares. I think transitioning into that will cost them their identity. And they’ll become hooked on state money because that’s who funds the lion’s share of all daycares, schools etc.

We might be a bit ahead here in Germany. A lot of churches around me have been closed or repurposed some years ago. Including the one where I grew up.

I think some of the contributing factors are how church never modernizes or listens to the people. Despite Christianity claiming to be about people or some kind of community of people. And where I’m at, they just massively cut funding to youth projects. So no wonder they’re struggling with succession. They’re still catering to old people, who will go to heaven sometime soon-ish and they might leave donations in their last will. But there’s no replacement for their followers becoming extinct, since they don’t have anything of value to offer to younger people. And they’re now actively throwing them overboard because young people’s spaces and concerns are just (financial) ballast.

So… I think this is largely self-inflicted. I mean they could make an effort to offer something of value. Something that contributes to people’s lives in the 21st century. Or relates to their real-world wants and needs. But they don’t do any of that.

Is PieFed trying to pull in data on post creation? I think what people do is just post links and the platform can then go ahead and fetch a social media post and display it alongside, or fetch something like the Open Graph metadata of a news article and display the summary…

I haven’t looked at the code. Seems Lemmy fetches Mastodon toots. I remember this being discussed in the history of the Fediverse. Our instances already do lots of HTTP requests all day, so we should make it somewhat efficient. Idk if doing additional requests on each view would be great. On the other hand fetching it immediately on post creation isn’t great either, because we end up in a situation where we constantly DDoS websites because each time anyone posts a link, that website is going to be bombarded by requests by hundreds or thousands of Fedi servers… Idk where we’re at with that discussion… mainly remember this wasn’t as straightforward as it seems.

Would be useful to have those “blurbs” though. Both for cross-posts and other stuff.

Hehe, though a point I’d like to add to the discussion: The internet didn’t get any better after the dotcom collapse. On the contrary, it kind of got worse… I have a hunch this might be the same. So better prepare, and brace for impact, don’t just wait. 😄
