  • Sell nvidia and buy amd.

  • Banning third party apps was the symptom. The root cause was Reddit going public. The lust for cash ruined Reddit for a lot of people.

  • It's a little confusing, at first you say you'll need to use the terminal to correct "something about your particular hardware or software setup may require special tweaks or install that requires typing" then later you say "I now have my Mint OS on a portable USB keychain that I can use on any PC."

It doesn't seem these two statements could both be true. But regardless, I'm glad you appear to have found a working solution to whatever problem you were trying to solve. I believe the greatest strength of Linux is that in general the problems are solvable whereas in closed source systems they are often not and in fact are often discouraged either to make more money or just simply exert control.

  • I just upgraded a Linux box I build in 2018. It had a Ryzen 5 1600 and 16gb DDR4. Previously I'd replaced the video card with a Radeon 580. But with that config it sucked at video games, pretty much unplayable. Replaced the CPU with a Ryzen 9 5900 and slightly faster 32GB DDR4 and now all of a sudden it plays older games great. Probably the most challenging game I've tried is Doom from 2016 or whenever which isn't much to brag about but the CPU upgrade made a huge difference. The video card and CPU was about $450. Definitely worth the money. It feels like a totally different computer.

As a side note, I'm generally not a big fan of generative AI but it was helpful in deciding the upgrades. In particular it pointed out that to upgrade the CPU I needed to update my motherboard BIOS. Double check everything for sure but it provided solid suggestions.

  • When I was that age my main exercise was commuting by running or biking. I got additional sporadic exercise doing miscellaneous sports. Having kids made it very hard to do more than that. I'm not working now and have the time and energy to do much broader and consistent exercise.

Turning your commute into your exercise regimen is great. Be warned though that the human body is great at optimizing and will quickly adapt to that specific routine. When you vary off that routine you'll find you're not in as great of shape as you thought. But you'll be miles ahead from where you'd be otherwise.

  • Come on Leo, there's money to be made. This isn't the time to consider consequences. If I don't get it someone else will.

But seriously, it's a pretty good argument against a guy sitting on $10 billion talking about wealth inequality.

  • Step 1: Run the government into the ground. Step 2: Ask billionaires to help. Step 3: Billionaires become the government.

  • I'm not sure I want to follow Charlie Kirk career path. It sort of seems like a dead-end.

  • Haha! Now if only the point of work was to make you happy! If research showed it made your boss wealthier then everyone would be WFH tomorrow!

  • When reddit announced that they were going public I knew the end was nigh. Money corrupts everything. What made reddit cool was the users and reddit just wanted to suck that dry. I was happy to leave but I pretty much just lurked on Reddit so it wasn't that hard.

  • Hadn't heard of that before. Thanks for the reference.

  • Canada would then be more US than Canadian at that point. US + Canada should keep United States of America name. The question is then what to call the other country. Kingdom of Christ? The 1950s?

  • Flip-flopping on states rights is conservative bread and butter. When conservatives control the federal government there is no such thing as state rights and when they don't it's federal overreach. This endless news cycle with these talking heads ceaselessly babbling is normalizing that words don't actually matter. Politicians will say the exact opposite thing with equal conviction.

  • Yes, I heard that but I think that there is almost always somewhere to move. My guess is that the police thought she didn't make that effort. Probably the police didn't make it very clear what they wanted before the escalated.

  • I'm a little confused. Lots of words before it seems like she was pulled over because she didn't get out of the way of the police when they put their sirens on. Impossible to know whether she made a mistake or not. Still probably a massive overreaction by the police. Obviously traumatic for the young woman but her narrative seems melodramatic. Yes, you're in the bike lane but you can still move over. It does seem dystopia that you can be arrested for not having ID for such a small offense.

  • The older I get the more I favor unions because they seem to support the idea of seniority. However, assigning benefits based on seniority doesn't seem like a very effective solution for a well functioning system. Gotta hand it to the Republicans. They ran with a crazy ass fucking disrupter and it's worked for them. Wish the democrats had the balls to roll with Bernie 9 years ago.

  • You have to take into account that at least 30% of the total are likely "Trump is sent by God and is devinely inspired and therefore can do no wrong" crowd. So when his disapproval number hits 70% that's as high as it'll go.

  • Where do I buy stock in the federal government. That shits going to the moon!

  • My sample size of myself has had 1 drive fail in decades. It was a solid state drive. Thankfully it failed in a strangely intermittent way and I was able to recover the data. But still, it surprised me as one would assume solid state would be more reliable. That spinning rust has proven to be very reliable. But regardless I'm sure SSD will be/are better in every way.
