  • This was surprisingly well animated and directed for a completely unproven studio! I'll definitely be keeping an eye on Soigne going forward.

That said, I felt like the story didn't really justify the level of care that was put in. The source material is a 4koma manga (a 4koma about high school girls helping a mangaka write a 4koma about high school girls, how exciting), and you can really feel it in the story structure. Scenes feel a bit disconnected from each other and there doesn't really seem like any narrative throughline (like, what happened to trying to recruit another member to save their club?) I guess for some people the comfy vibe could be enough to carry it, because it does execute on that pretty well, but for me, I feel like there are plenty of other shows that get that same vibe but with a bit more substance to them. I give this premiere a 2/5.

  • This has some interesting ideas and worldbuilding, but I think it really failed in its execution. The action was really lackluster and the characters felt very flat. Overall, I wasn't impressed. I give the premiere a 2/5.

  • As expected, the conclusion to the case wasn't very clever or satisfying, and it feels a little scummy to try and keep people hooked by splitting the episode into reveal for one mystery + start of another, especially if it becomes a pattern going forward. Not going to continue this one, but as a parting prediction, I'm going to say that Satomi definitely did it, though I have no idea how or why.

  • This went way harder than it needed to, lol. The jokes were a little hit or miss for me, but I ended up really liking the tone they settled into where nothing is taken seriously. The action was also way better than it had any right to be, and I really love that they gave those two ninjas interesting character designs even though they had very limited screen time between introduction and death. I'll definitely be continuing this one. 4/5.

  • Mia wasnt paying attention in saintess school

I read it to mean that Philia had been killing the monster herself, but normally it'd be the saint's job to maintain the barriers that weaken them and then the hunting parties would do the actual killing. Even weakened, if the monsters are left alive they'll eventually become a problem.

  • Mia is about ready to burn Girtonia to the ground, and they're gonna deserve it, lol.

  • Glad this is leaning more toward ensemble, and I'm really liking the comfy vibe.

  • I was looking forward to the skip to the modern era, but I guess we're not doing that, lol. It was also very weird that Jinya seemingly implied that his father's abuse toward Suzune was justified and that he was wrong to help her escape? IDK, just kind of strange how hard the show seems to be going on "it's right to hate children who are different, actually".

And what is going on with "full of beans"?? I have never in my life heard this expression and none of my friends recognized it either, but two different anime this season have used it and I'm just really confused. Were they translated by AI and for some reason the model loves this phrase?

  • There's something so charming and cute about seeing robots go about their jobs long after there's any need for them, so this is starting from a strong place for me. On the other hand though, it felt like we didn't get a lot of substance this episode. It's a little hard to tell if this is a chill and melancholy slice of life type show or if it's building up to something a bit more involved - it'll be easier to tell what kind of show this is when we see how our hotel staff interacts with the aliens. For now, I feel like I can't get a strong read on this show, so I'll give it a 3/5 and give it some more time to show off what it can do.

  • Doga Kobo's animation and writing is, as always, spot on, but good lord could they pick some stuff to adapt that isn't Like This ever in their lives? I don't have much tolerance for adopted-sibling romance (family is family, blood relation or no), so this was always going to be a no-go for me, but I have a (self-imposed) duty to watch every anime, so here I am. I give the premiere a very mixed 3/5 and wish everyone continuing a happy I-can't-believe-it's-not-incest while I leave and never think about this ever again.

  • My point was that it's a very specific style of flirting that feels very pandery to me

  • I always mean to stick around farther into the season, but for one reason or another it never seems to work out, lol.

And I'm glad my impatience came in handy! I realized I had a few to send to rikka and considered waiting for a reply each time to make sure I didn't break her, but ultimately decided it was probably fine, and thankfully it was! You've done a great job with her, so thanks for all you do.

  • It feels like this is aiming for chill and soothing, but it definitely lands in boring for me. We didn't get a lot from our main character this episode, and it seemed like Aizu itself was the star of the show. I'm not sure i see the appeal of watching someone else experience a location, but I guess travel content is enjoyable for some people, so maybe this just isn't made for me. I give the premiere a 2/5.

  • I really wasn't impressed with this one. The purse mystery felt a little underwhelming because we were given so little information about it, and the ghost mystery was really confusing for me because I saw the second doorway in the hall right away and then was gaslit about it when all the characters said there was only the one doorway. There's not much to the characters so far either. It's possible this will get good, but so far I'm not seeing it. I give the premiere a 2/5.

  • Are you talking about "Suppose a Kid from the Last Dungeon Boonies Moved to a Starter Town?" or a different version of the same story? lol

  • She teases him in every interaction they have. "Bullying" might be a bit of an overstatement, but she's in the same vein as Nagatoro and Uzaki is what I'm trying to say (and I've often seen people who are horny about that kind of archetype call it bullying).

  • I have awakened from my slumber to watch more terrible anime! (and good ones too hopefully)

This season seems to be going pretty well so far, with lots of promising new shows. I'm particularly eager to see more from Lazarus, YAIBA, and Gorilla God's Go-to Girl, with a special shout-out to Classic★Stars, an anime I am very much enjoying even though it is trash and I don't think anyone else cares about it.

Speaking of trash, though, here's my garbage pile from the past week:

There's potential for a good story here, but wow was this structured badly. They dedicated the first half to harem hijinks, without even really introducing us to the waifus or their relationships with the main character (who was absent). It felt like filler, which is a terrible first impression to make. When we finally do see our main character, he's being a badass and extorting the rich out of their slaves so that he can free them and give them affordable healthcare, which is based as hell (especially considering the state of current anime's relationship to slave waifus). I feel like this premise could make a really good and engaging story, but it seems like the show wants to focus a lot on how all the hot animal girls want to jump his bones, and I truly do not care about that.

I also learned that the entire first episode is anime-original, and the choice to write new boring content instead of adapting the actual story doesn't bode well for their writing decisions going forward. Not to mention it seems like when we flash back, we'll get the bog-standard banished from the hero's party story we've seen a million times.

The art is cheap and bad and the core story feels more what you'd throw together to make a softcore porn than an actual attempt at real fiction. Boring and bland, but if you're into the fetish stuff it's going for, then I guess it'll serve its function.

A few minutes in I had to go check to make sure this wasn't a sequel. It felt like the story expected me to know context I didn't, and not in an in-medias-res way. It isn't, so I continued, assuming it was just a strange storytelling choice and we'd get back around to the backstory and lore later. After the episode was over, I found out why from the source material readers.

Apparently, the anime took the bold and confusing choice to skip the first volume of the novels. They cut right to the start of volume 2, without rewriting things to fill us in on the missing context. They also went ahead and revealed most of the major twists from volume 1, essentially locking themselves out of flashing back to that later (at least in a satisfying way). So in a way I was sort of right, this is a sequel, just not to any anime that exists. This strange choice (as well as some other changes the source readers pointed out) really doesn't bode well for the quality of the adaptation going forward. I have no idea how good or bad the source material is, but this adaptation is honestly worse than nothing.

ETA: i forgor that shoshimin is back this season! I haven't watched it yet because of all the new stuff, but once things calm down I'll be keeping up with that one!

  • Not sure about this one just yet. I like the idea of short stories about an ensemble cast, but there was just too much focus on Rurika and Murata. It all felt very pandery toward the current trend of waifu-who-bullies-you, which like, that's cool for the people who are into that, but that's not me, lol. The story about the security guards really got me, though, so I can see this ending up being a good time. It really depends on the ratio they settle on as the show goes forward. I give the premiere a mixed 3/5.

  • As a member of the alphabet mafia, I hate, hate, hate the cis/het "can men and women really be friends??" bullshit, so I came into this with a bit of a chip on my shoulder, but left pretty impressed. Our main characters seem well defined and expressive, and it's easy to like and root for them. It's also easy to see why this boy-girl friendship will not survive, since from the beginning it's been pretty flirty and not exactly platonic. I was a bit worried this would turn into a harem, but it seems like it's just the two girls, so hopefully it'll just be an emotionally messy love triangle, which I am definitely here for. I give the premiere a 4/5.

Also, I can't help but draw parallels between Himari's attitude toward Yuu and the way a lot of in-denial lesbians talk about their best friend (who they are in love with). "Ya, we're just friends, but we're best friends, and even if they get married, I'm always going to take priority, right? that's what it means to be a best friend. we'll still hang out and have sleepovers and stuff because that's what best friends do, and if their spouse doesn't accept that they don't deserve them."
