  • There are a bunch of places in BC making gin, I can think of at least 15. Really interesting flavours and techniques. Two of my favourites are Victoria Gin and Sheringham Point. Tofino also has a good distillery. It’s the new craft alcohol scene since people are kinda off beer it seems. (I would add links but my internet is being wonky).

  • Canada makes really lovely wines. Vancouver Island especially has some of my favourites (also because I live here haha).

  • Sorry, I missed your reply! Apparently you can make it work with clementine but I haven’t bothered delving into it much yet, just use the web player or my phone. I was on openSUSE and it wasn’t working but I’ve switched to fedora so might give it a go again. I don’t really listen to music when I’m working as I find it distracting, mostly when I’m driving so it hasn’t been an issue for me.

  • Qobuz. That’s what we switched to a bit ago. Really easy to switch, they have a service that will transfer all your playlists, only a few songs didn’t maket it over and they were easy to find after. The music quality is great, that’s a big plus for us. There’s no podcasts or audiobooks either. The only gripes I have is the incredibly slow download speed for offline listening, but that comes with the better sound quality. Just plug in your phone and do other things while they download. And sometimes the music will stop in between tracks. The weekly playlist isn’t great for me, Spotify was better, but for my husband it’s spot on. I’ve also heard from others on Lemmy that say it takes a few weeks and then it’s great. Maybe it’s just having a hard time with my very eclectic music tastes. Generally I’m happy about the switch!

I have heard that they pay artists more, but really no one is paying what the music is actually worth. I am slowly buying my music so we can self host it, just takes time and money. Also we get vinyl of the music we really love.

  • I’d definitely go and see the world if I’m not trapped in the area I died in. Then probably just check out random houses. Like looking through the MLS listings but every house is an open house!

  • Haunt some people on the plane. Might as well make a long flight interesting.

  • Hey same!! Analog clocks just make sense to me, it gives me a visual representation of time chunks. Though I have ADHD I’ve always been an on time person (generally!) since I can look at the clock and figure out when I need to leave. With the PIN thing, I have to do shapes, won’t remember the numbers. I can’t even remember a whole phone number, I have no idea what my husband or daughter’s phone numbers are.

I’ve also thought I have dyscalculia though analog clocks are supposed to be hard if you have it.

  • My husband has a collection of obsolete technology. The oldest thing he’s got in there is a VT100 terminal.

  • That’s exactly what I was thinking! Going to save it for my daughter’s games.

  • Weirdly I’m only 17 kms as I’m staying with friends while I’m away from home working. I actually live 90 kms away now, though I lived all over the world growing up. The furthest away was 12k kms.

  • I read that book when I was younger and couldn’t remember the name until a few years ago. It resonated with me in a profound way. Having to be resourceful and not just make do, but survive, with what you have around you is something I’ve ingrained into my life. And not just in emergency situations but all the time. Seeing other uses for things, coming up with novel solutions, and yes, not giving up. My boss really appreciates my outlook at work for this reason.

I really liked the movie cast away for the same reasons.

  • The way things work is one of my favourite books. I still have the copy I got as a kid!

  • Myself and two friends went to Seattle to race (sailboats) and one had booked us a hotel on Aurora, I don’t remember the name unfortunately. When we got there they were both kinda iffy on the place but I didn’t notice anything too weird. It was your average cheap ish hotel. I had also had a few drinks by this point so that might have had something to do with it. Anyhoo, we went out drinking and had a lovely night, came back and passed out. In the morning I went to use the bathroom and as I’m sitting there everything started to come into focus, and yeah, it was pretty gross. I wandered back out and laid on the bed. As I reached my arms behind the pillow to stretch, my hand hit something, I grabbed it and pulled out a meth pipe. Nice. We packed up and headed to the front desk. They really didn’t want to refund us the money for the next two nights but when I put the meth pipe on the counter they suddenly decided they’d be able to do that for us. Ended up sleeping on the floor at a friend’s house and had a grand time.

  • Yup. Our wine glasses are stemless (I knock them over) and my husband doesn’t like his baking sheets in the dishwasher so as of yet we haven’t had a reason to use it. That being said, I know I will at some point!

  • I just went through this. I had an Asko for 13 years, was definitely happy enough with it to get another. So quiet! So when it did eventually die I was going to get another one but the prices have jumped quite a bit. The next best are Miele and Bosch, I ended up with a Bosch that was on a super sale. I’m pretty happy with it over all.

The Asko as mentioned was very quiet, the one I had before it sounded like a freight train so that was important. Over the years the eco clean setting wasn’t as good (food left on)so we switched settings to the regular cycle and that was ok. About a year ago we kept intermittently getting an error which was from the water pump sensor so it wouldn’t finish the wash. My neighbour had the same one (the reason I got it in the first place) and her front panel had gone so she gave it to me for parts. I never did end up fixing it and we just limped along until about a month ago and I said fuck it and got a new one. One thing I really liked about it was the layout inside for my dishes. One thing I hated was the sharp metal around the outside front trim. When we went to install it, it gouged the wood cabinet.

The Bosch is nice, almost as quiet and doesn’t use much water. The model we got is made in Germany too. I’m not such a fan of the layout inside but that’s probably because I’m just not used to it yet. It’s got the top utensil rack which I like. The next rack down you can adjust the height which I haven’t had a reason to use but I can see being handy over the holidays. Definitely loving having clean dishes again! It does have internet connectivity but as long as you don’t download the app it will never connect. I also didn’t want that but it’s hard to find one without now.

  • I will forget as I’m immediately getting the pen and paper to write it down. Happens way too often.

  • If I wanted to keep track then I definitely would need a calendar. My period is all over the place. Sometimes is 4 or 5 weeks in between instead of the usual 29 ish days, and sometimes I get two a month. There’s no set schedule for me unfortunately, and it’s more erratic as I get older. On the plus side I’ve never had cramps or the other usual symptoms, just had to make sure I have a tampon or pad with me at all times. So yay I guess.

It’s absolutely a way to collect that data and prosecute women. Look at the permissions of any app before you download it!!

  • LA Story! I still love that movie. Our movies were whatever the people that lived in the house before you left when they moved back to wherever they were from (expat life in the Middle East). Also my grandma taped all the Fairy Tale Theatre episodes for me. The three little pigs was the best! Billy Crystal as the runt and Jeff Goldblum as the big bad wolf, so so good.
