  • The thing about higher education especially in these changing times is that it is highly risky for the individual but pretty low risk as a society at large. That is the dirty little secret of privatizing educational costs. The other issue is student loans can't be washed away by bankruptcy. They sure should be able to be after some period of time -- or by some process. Then there is how people choose educational paths. I'm not convinced that an 18 your old is in any position to sanely make price/value and profit loss decisions around educational choices and carrier paths.

  • But presumably republicans will still vote for candidates that support such actions.

  • Smart home type stuff is with minor exceptions a total nightmare. Bad security, bad privacy, and bad longevity. Just no. There are some of these things that just don't work without connection back to the mother-ship, or at least lack major features. Generally it is recommended that if you do have these sorts of things, put them on a separate network at least.

  • Absurd! No home appliance should require an internet service. More enshittification.

  • Lookup alternatives at alternativeto.net. Signal is probably the best but there are others. Problem with chat, both people have to use. F-Droid is a good resource too.

I would not call FOSS a cult any more then unions or the civil rights movement.

  • You could install a hot mount SATA drive slot too if your using a workstation. I actually have 3.

  • Fairphone maybe.

  • You could say the same thing about cults. A lot of the MAGA movement. A lot of religion. Similarly how a lot of scams and other disinformation methods work. We do not try very hard to stop those things.

  • I don't know why people ever voted for Trump or are surprised by any of this. If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, it is probably a duck. His character has been well known for a long time.

  • Yes, there is that.

  • No but if you have a contract with a providor you pay for, those are the terms. For example Google free servicies they mine data but their paid services they do not. Sure e2ee is better but transport encryption is good.

  • Trump is a chaos generator. Chaos is bad for business.

  • You know this is over blown since "only" is used. Sure important. Not only.

  • I use my ATX case I have had since 1998 and an ATX mother board. I generally go AMD and use one of their best lower power processors. Last was an 8 core. I added SATA hot swap bays.

  • Time. I think I will at some point unless I buy and flash a Linux tablet first.

  • It is complicated. There is land out there that is not suitable for agriculture on one hand so free range grass fed might not be that bad, but herd animals produce methane too which is a powerful greenhouse gas. Then there is the whole question of eating meat from live animals as well if one cares about that and synthetic might be a way around that. Then of course the whole eco footprint issue. It would be interesting to know more.

  • I am thinking on the margin. Might be better to reduce meat rather then replace with synthetic meat.

Once one has done that, compare what is left including synthetic.

  • Google is promoting MTA-STS. MS is at least testing it and some others. Proton mail might support, check. I use NameCheap shared hosting mail. They support incoming but not outgoing.

Sure it is clear inside each org but secures between. Nice because you can secure in your org by contract. Not as good as e2ee of course.
