  • Reason I started using Python. C takes too much effort, Excel VBA is nut over 100 lines. Matlab or Python would be the next step. Matlab is nuts too in many ways.

  • Yes. No different. Some ways easier.

  • Just FYI my wife and her dad have used Linux for decades now. Both nontechnical users. I switched them in mid 00s.

Just keep in mind you will need to do the support when things break or on major upgrades. Otherwise she should have few issues.

  • It is far more then that. It is a full up programming language.

I never understand why people think compilation is a barrier. But sure most python is not compiled.

  • You can write Python code about 5x faster then C. Add libraries even faster.

  • Presumably because it minimizes developer time in writing code and is easy to use and it come with great libraries. That is why I have been using it since 1998.

Edit: People use to think I was crazy using Python. It was interesting seeing people slowly get a clue over the years.

  • This is why IRV is so important. Kick both paries to the curb. The issues with the parties are different though.

The Republican party had its revolution but not in any substance. It is largely a movement focused on destruction and retribution fanned by opportunists and disinformation. It is about weakening an dividing the country and yes helping billionares. It is not about sane policy. What could go wrong?

Democrats. That Sanders revolution failed. So the party is stuck in the past. It needs a change. Leaders are too old and out of touch. With some major exceptions, they do not seem to be able to communicate with working class people and frankly do not seem to want to. Who knows where this is going.

  • I have a friend that is a professional programmer. They think AI will generate lots of work fixing the shit code it creates. I guess we will see.

  • Physical backup media. Hot mount SATA spinning drives and also USB 3 spinning drives. Some times software on flash drives. Flash drives for emegencey boot media. I sometimes transport files on flash drives too.

  • Scents are polutants. I hate them. So funny that some are called air fresheners.

  • Campaigns, campaign financing, and lobbying. US polotics is pay to play. Plus Americans are very individualistic. We would rather get screwed over by companies and the rich then have government tell us what to do. Does not always make sense.

  • Not anonymous or free but bitwarden send is nice. Thundermail from Mozilla will have this feature too.

  • I wonder who the last person was that he talked too.

So is Trump actually going to grow a spine, think strategically, develop actual negotiating skills? Are we going to see toasters fly? Might be nice.

  • Maybe more about uncertainty including terrifs and inflation too.

  • Programming in particular, though fun, has always been kind of a piece part job. Aparently easily out sourced, and now easily automated. I say aparently because out sourcing and off-shoring turned out not to be that easy. We are now going to find out about AI.

One reason I did not go into IT 40 years ago was this reason. I went into the physical sciences and engineering and had a fine career. I was wrong then about IT it turned out. Who knows now.

  • What a chestnut. I am talking about US politics and the truly nutty gun culture in the US. This is a right wing facination and a political position of the republican party. The right thinks gun deaths are just fine as long as it is not them or someone they care about. Just look at gun ownership stats by party.

  • Shootings involve guns. Out of the gate that is a right leaning thing at least from that point of view.
