  • I think that's anxiety, but also yes

  • Somebody please show me the place where I organize and do this collective action thing, I have no idea what I'm doing. People keep telling me to do it but when I ask how they're all like "you'll know how when the time comes" or "what kind of question is that just go out and do something" or "easy, simply bring out the guillotines and-" it's like guys, I don't own a guillotine, I'm not a French historian, what do I do after work to make a dent in this?

  • I think they do actually want Twitter again though. Admittedly, what Twitter used to be was still much better than what it is now.

  • God I hope it all collapses before the end of trumps term.

  • Used to ask what these were as a kid when I found them on my tongue. Nobody knew what I was talking about and I just assumed it was adults being stupid like usual. Guess I was right.

  • Yeah the problem is more with the weight of the components and how little energy is in that small patch of sunlight. To provide enough thrust to hold it up is impressive, not just that a solar panel is providing power.

  • My problem with the app rn is you can't do any moderation and there are no notifications.

  • Thank you for pointing this out to me, I've been falling into this habit.

  • I hate really car-centric areas, it makes it so much harder to get to places I want to go to. Sometimes I'll go somewhere that costs more outside the city just to avoid trying to find parking in the city. If they just had me park outside the city and hop on a simple transit system to where I had to go then I'd be in the city a lot more often.

  • It takes a deficit of about 3500 calories to lose 1lb. Let's say you stop eating at all for those 60 days. Assuming you burn 2500 calories a day idle, then after 60 days you'd have burned 150,000 calories, which would lose you ~43 lbs. Also your metabolism would slow down if you stopped eating and would make you lose less.

I don't think it's possible without some kind of surgery, but that violates your requirement of not spending a lot.

  • My retirement plan is to die in a fracking accident.

  • All companies should be required to provide firmware source code and driver source code with any electronics they sell. They're selling a product, I get to decide how to use it.

  • Okay but they are absolutely defending themselves in the meantime by focusing on ICE. Imagine there is a gang of state sponsored murderers beating down your door, what are you going to do to the oligarchs in that situation? The people who need to make the distinction you're making here are too busy being convinced that a phone is actually a gun by a man on TV.

  • Maybe, but it is satisfying to see.

  • Can you fill me in on what that means? Searching for mud doesn't give me useful results.

  • First of all no, school fails miserably at actually teaching anyone to learn effectively, so that's not why they do that. Second, they could just as effectively teach kids how to learn by teaching them things that are actually useful. I would've loved to have classes for note taking and studying, critical thinking, maintenance and repair... instead I've had to teach myself all of those things, meanwhile my school was too busy making me read about Victorian era dress styles to teach me any of that. Even math beyond algebra 1 is fairly niche and is probably better taught specifically to the people who need it. I'm in comp sci, I use that math all the time, but my friend getting his master's in plant breeding probably doesn't need to be intimately familiar with calculus.

It feels better to tell ourselves that all of the years wasted by school are actually for something but the reality is that school just does kind of a bad job at equipping people with the skills they need, and it needs to be improved dramatically.

  • You seem to be in the minority there, maybe an external clip-on webcam is a better solution? I doubt a back-facing webcam would be used very much because most people use laptops like a take-home work station, and they use phones to show things to people (I'm sure there's a good reason you're not doing that, it's just what most people do)

  • Wtf kind of parents do that?
