  • And Harley Davidson.

They go hard on branding. They're one of the few motorcycle brands that let you go for a test ride (others might have a special event day at a dealership where you can ride around the parking lot). If you go for it, expect to be suited up in all the Harley leathers by the sales guy. It's not a motorcycle, it's a branded lifestyle where you ride around sometimes.

  • If you have to tell people you're not Enron, you're probably Enron.

  • It is that kind of party!

  • Then what is AI? Or do you think there's no intermediate steps between Turning Machine and full intelligence?

  • We should all aspire to be the Oceans 11 heist of having a library card.

  • It was developed by academics in the first place. It's AI because it was developed by AI researchers.

That's how it works. You build knowledge by making these little pieces. LLMs are one of those pieces. It won't get to full human intelligence on its own, but it might be part of what gets there.

  • Would you consider Conway's Game of Life to be AI? Because the field certainly did back in the day, and it's less impressive than LLMs.

  • Not how it works.

The field of AI has been about making computers do things they couldn't before. Even if they're just "predicting the next token", LLMs are a significant leap over Markov Chains (which also predict the next token, but produce output that's more funny than useful).

Again, if you're unaware of the history of MIT CSAIL, then you really shouldn't be opining on what is and isn't AI.

  • LLMs are AI. No, they're not going to get to "AGI", but this idea that they aren't connected doesn't match how the field has evolved.

If you're unaware of how the MIT model railroading club is one of the most important groups in the history of AI, then do some reading.

  • The distinction with a difference is that anyone can flatter Trump's ego the exact same way. Mamdani seems to have done it. There's nothing particular about Russia that makes it work.

  • Guys, I'm starting to think Trump isn't completely right in the head.

  • Where were you when I complained we needed additional transmission lines to keep bringing more renewable energy online?

I've strongly argued for this in the past.

All these tech bros with AI datacenters are putting their spare couch change together to build HVDC lines across the continent, right?

  • What kind of third world shit hole makes its dictators face consequences?

  • When a family in the global south uses coal to cook their food, they release CO2. When a billionaire flies around the continent on a private jet, they also release CO2.

Do you consider the two to be equivalent in need or output?

  • People downloading stuff for personal use vs making money off of it are not the same at all. We don't tend to condone people selling bootleg DVDs, either.

  • I’ve never heard anyone say “we need less data centers” until ai came along. What, all the other data centers are totally fine but the ones being used for ai are evil? If you have an issue with the drastically increased power consumption for ai you should be able to argue a stance that is inclusive of all data centers - assuming it’s something you give a fuck about. Which you don’t.

AI data centers take up substantially more power than regular ones. Nobody was talking about spinning up nuclear reactors or buying out the next several years of turbine manufacturing for non-AI datacenters. Hell, Microsoft gave money to a fusion startup to build a reactor, they've already broken ground, but it's far from proven that they can actually make net power with fusion. They actually think they can supply power by 2028. This is delusion driven by an impossible goal of reaching AGI with current models.

Your whole post is missing out on the difference in scale involved. GPU power consumption isn't comparable to standard web servers at all.

  • EV batteries are often still good to use as they are for other purposes. Like home power storage. Their storage amount gets low enough that they aren't giving sufficient range anymore, but they still have plenty of life left in different applications.

There's a million reasons to prefer bikes and public transit over cars in general. The reasons specific to EVs are usually bullshit.

Over the past ~20 years, Google became the de facto entry point for learning new skills and information. Google also sucks now. This is a really big problem.

A natural leader is someone who is seen by others as a leader. It is not the same thing as a good leader.
