  • Took me a sec to find it on first scan of the article, so highlighting this bit for those curious about the other games:

. . . Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake has been cancelled, as well as four unannounced titles, including three new IPs and a mobile title. The identity of the sixth game has not been clarified.

and the delayed games have not been clarified yet either. From the related article:

In addition, Ubisoft said it’s delayed seven games to ensure they meet quality expectations. It did not say which games had slipped, but confirmed that the seven titles include one title that was planned for release before April 2026, which will now be released before April 2027.

  • It's weird, IRL and in some online venues, it seems like people are usually friendly and ready to helps newbies learn.

But then plenty of other online spaces seem to just invite elitism and negativity. The culture of 'rtm', 'lmgtfy' and 'marked as duplicate' doesn't encourage people to respect others.

  • That's not Pokemon is it? Looks more like a Mega Man Battle Network or Star Force game.

  • Lol, in the first part of 2008, I was obsessed with the new Smash Bros game that was about to come out. The marketing was drip feeding info day by day, and it was all working perfectly on me. Throughout those early months, I could tell you how many days until it released in the US.

I turned out not to like that game so much.

  • Game Boy Studio looks like a pretty slick IDE to facilitate making GB games, might be a good entry point. Is there something similar for other platforms? Gotta be, right?

But if you are going for a very old platform like that, technical limitations might start to crop up. You've planned a game, does the concept scale down well?

  • Super cliche yes, cringe no.

It's not entirely a bad metaphor or whatever, but it's certainly tired. It's also a bit misleading. Being good at chess isn't a really a sign of high intelligence generally, it just means you're good at chess.

  • Yes, important to know it's gratis and not libre. For many people that's fine. I think very few are cool enough to fix their own bugs, but still it's often significant on principle.

  • Had this experience too. Played around with Shotcut and OpenShot, really wanted them to be better just because the name 'Kdenlive' is annoying. But alas, the latter seemed easier to work with.

  • Don't know that I have a particular favorite, but one that comes to mind to recommend is Don Norman's Design of Everyday Things.

  • I definitely second this!

Another classic in the game history space - Game Over - is one of my favorites too. MoD is probably better written, but then GO's subject matter draws me in a little more.

  • Didn't appreciate Reddit's hostility toward their userbase over the API concerns.

I used a third party mobile app once in a while, but was mostly viewing from desktop anyway. I've not been banned (AFAIK), and whenever I peek back at it things still seem fine. But the whole controversy and their poor handling was as good an excuse as any to start using a more open, decentralized platform.

Was also already curious about Lemmy anyway, had heard of it before all the kerfuffle. Figured it would be dead, and the 'choose a community' thing was enough of an obstacle to keep me from getting into AP platforms for a while. When the mainstream closed platforms started heavy degradification though, both problems got solved(ish).

    1. Dragon Ball Z
    2. Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood
    3. Cowboy Bebop
    4. Death Note
    5. Trigun

I'll go ahead and knock out the 'normie that watched anime on TV twenty years ago' list.

I've got a handful of others I've seen and liked, plus some older and newer ones I plan to watch. But I need to really branch it out a little.

  • I played The Stanley Parable for the first time this week. I wasn't a PC person back then, so now I've picked up the physical copy of the Switch version. Fascinatingly weird.

I got most of the endings I think. Did the obvious routes and a couple I happened on, then I looked up the old lists of endings. And at least got the 'Epilogue' for the Ultra Deluxe stuff.

At the opening, it's so interesting. It feels like a game that has a lot to discover. It turns out though that the joke is kinda that there isn't. It has tons of little hints that lead nowhere. Still, I smiled and laughed like an idiot a few times when it called out my expectations.

The other games route was cool, but I wish it were still Minecraft and Portal instead of Firewatch and Rocket League; the latter two I have no strong feelings for.

  • That's a good question, answer is generally that it depends. Do I want to spend more money on stuff? Of course not.

But if the price is the same or negligibly more, then I'm better off not incurring the bodily damage of consuming excess calories. The smaller the default size of the suggested meal (eg, a combo) the better, unless it hits the point where it makes me order a second meal or extra sides.

That preference reflects my own privilege, health perspective, and lack of self-control though. I know it's a different call for everyone.

  • I'm actually pretty OK with this. Portion sizes were generally kinda oversized, especially for not-so-healthy fastfood.

  • It's pretty amazing how many talks happen there.

If you're ever bored, I think they record a lot of them so you can go back and watch later. https://fosdem.org/2026/archives/

  • Good luck with both community building and learning! If it stays too quiet out there, there's also !languagelearning@sopuli.xyz where I know at least a few Deutsch learners are around.

  • I use Eqonomize. It's simple and works well for my purposes.

  • First thought is that !german@lemmy.world already exists and could use more activity.

A lot of times, imo, it's better to build (or consolidate) existing comms rather than create new ones. What differentiates the new one?
