That sounds like a personal question, as you're the one putting the work in. I do believe there's a threshold as at a certain point to me having a good source for card scrapers or scratch stock may outweigh the need to restore. Just don't paint it, that's for the heathens.
John Heisz showed a little while back how he made his own feather board for table saw use. You can buy one of course or you can make your own, as mechanically they're fairly simple. I've seen more than a few examples that use either a mag switch to connect to the cast iron top of a saw or some that use an expandable bar to fit into a miter/T track.
I've seen a couple builds use them as an economical vise screw. I almost went that way for my leg vise, but instead found a vise screw that was about the same price.
