  • the ukraine war seems to have done some damage to his psyche. he believed that if trump was elected he would basically immediately give up ukraine to russia. before his attempt he tried to go to ukraine to volunteer himself but they told him he was too old (he is currently 59) and he tried to recruit volunteers to fight for ukraine from afghanistan and taiwan, among other places. he would also spend a lot of time on twitter posting his full phone number and email address in the mentions of random celebrities to try and get them to contact him for information about how to support ukraine

  • not sure if this has been posted here yet but it's from yesterday. somebody at the DOJ got catfished by someone working for James O'Keefe and talked about the epstein case on their first date. ever the peak of professionalism, an iphone notes apology screenshot was posted directly to the DOJ's twitter account https://xcancel.com/TheJusticeDept/status/1963635111112446449#m

  • internationalist liberal would-be assassin is a real mid 19th century archetype and i do kind of respect it. at the very least he is more coherent than the other guy who tried to kill trump last year

  • ryan routh, the NAFO guy who tried to kill trump at his golf course last year, is representing himself in court (has anyone ever won a major case by representing themselves?). he challenged trump to a trial by combat, or golf: "I think a beatdown session would be more fun for everyone; give me shackles and cuffs and let the old fat man give it his worst" ... "a round of golf with the racist pig, he wins he can execute me, I win I get his job (sorry hillbilly vance)". he has also volunteered himself as part of a prisoner swap with China, Iran, North Korea or Hamas recently https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/would-be-assassin-ryan-wesley-routh-challenges-trump-to-golf-game-in-bizarre-court-filing-he-wins-he-can-execute-me/ar-AA1LKkhd

    the slingers - payphone man

  • i have seen more headlines about "putin and xi discuss[ing] immortality" than i have about the parade itself which is pretty funny. there is no way to report on the parade itself without talking about its incredibly impressive scale and organization so they just focus on a snippet of a conversation in which two men in their 70s marvel at the fact that people don't die at 70 as much as they used to and talk about how people might live even longer in the future

  • i wonder how much time in any given day he spends thinking about trans people. i wonder how long he could go in a regular conversation without being transphobic

  • he has completely destroyed his own life lol

  • glad to hear it included the seasonals, they make up the bulk of the workforce at the parks. people who work at partner organizations and do the same work as park employees but without the gov benefits (time off, etc) are another pretty large chunk of the workforce at parks and i hope they are next

  • somewhat related, there was a street preacher at my college who shouted one time "evolution can't be true, because monkeys wouldn't be FUCKING UP the earth like we are" and i thought, you know what, that's not a terrible point all things considered

  • would be funny if the uk went down like the ussr, with england being the first to leave

  • 'Bunkmaxxing': learn more about Gen Z's newest fashion and lifestyle trend, inspired by The Wire's Det. Bunk Moreland

  • bill clinton and trump are the same age fyi. i think trump will be around for a while longer but it is a bit funny that vance has been saying "the president DEFINITELY won't die soon but just if he does, I would make a great president". i would bet anything that thiel is hoping vance will push trump down the stairs or something just so he can officially have his guy at the top

  • anyway being able to say "bet you don't know who did this one

" when mgmt or whatever comes on is going to be one of my life's real joys if i get to be 50+

  • i'm 27 and one of the managers at my last job was in his late 40s and went wild whenever i would drop that i knew about shit like mr belvedere (albeit, only because of the story about the time he sat on his own nuts and they had to stop filming) and simon & simon. another guy there was about 70 and would always be stoked whenever my younger coworker or i would know about whatever early 70s fleetwood mac or don henley type stuff he would play on the radio. sometimes i would be kind of offended that he was surprised lol, like yeah dude of course i know who neil young is

  • i often see reactionaries online defending the genocide of the americas or being racist against the indigenous people here by saying that they didn't use wheels for anything other than toys before the europeans arrived. what i didn't know is that wheeled vehicles for transporting goods or people over large distances were also pretty rare in large parts of the mediterranean until centuries after the colonization of the americas. they only appeared in the Pelopponese peninsula in Greece in the 20th century, according to Braudel! turns out wheels are pretty fucking useless if you don't have well paved and maintained roads

  • yeah i am surprised they ran the piece at all. the archive link doesn't have the comments on it so i can't see what the nyt crowd thinks of it but the response on twitter has been roundly negative even from people who claim they are pro-ukraine. one, two

it was very interesting that they wrote that they are "finding it hard to recruit young men" with no followup on why that might be or what they are doing to get young men in the military

  • Expecting on the Front Lines: Motherhood in Ukraine’s Military by the NYT

Ukraine’s military is finding it hard to recruit young men as the war with Russia grinds on, but women — all volunteers — are a bright spot. The number of women serving has grown more than 20 percent to about 70,000 since Russia’s invasion in 2022.

Those who become pregnant often serve in tough conditions under relentless shelling, living without heat in the winter, or running water and proper toilets.

While the U.S. Army and many other militaries remove pregnant soldiers from combat zones, Ukrainian women usually serve until their seventh month. And that is in a military that doctors and soldiers say is ill-equipped to support them — from uniforms that don’t fit pregnant women, to a lack of prenatal care and nurseries — amid the costs and challenges of fighting the war.

The Ukrainian military did not respond to questions about how many women were pregnant or had given birth in the ranks, or about prenatal care for soldiers.
