  • I didn't know that until this thread. That other poster made the distinction, so I looked it up.

  • The point they were making is that blackmail is only about revealing legal infractions. It's a legal distinction that most people don't care about in everyday language.

  • Under US law, blackmail is legally defined as threatening to reveal a criminal act in exchange for goods/services. Extortion is for threatening to reveal sensitive information.

  • So these two are CBP, not ICE. CBP is much more often the people on the border searching for drugs, not the people rounding up undocumented immigrants. People of color might sign up for CBP thinking they could help lower the amount of fentanyl being smuggled in. Now, these two specific guys are clearly in it to hurt people, regardless of their skin color.

  • It's hard to both love and hate the same thing. I hate that we are doing this to people, but if it is going to happen at least it is happening to assholes like this guy.

  • Can you imagine the sales bump from the positive PR if they had given 500 random strangers a million dollars instead of giving it to Elon? Absolute worst case they would have sold roughly 499 more cars.

  • Time to get Elon a trillion dollar bonus!

  • It would have been really funny if they had arrested him/her for illegally entering their sovereign territory.

  • A) The line. I hate lines. Even though In-N-Out does do a great job of moving the line fast, I still don't have any desire to sit in my car breathing the exhaust of 50 other cars to get a fast food burger. I'd rather order ahead and go pick it up.

    B) It's better than McDonalds, but not by much. It's a hard truth that people will get super offended about, but In-N-Out is just a slightly better McDonalds. People not from CA see the hype about it and are disappointed after trying it, thinking it will be like a Five Guys or Habit or something. It isn't. It's truly just a fast food burger done well.

    C) I don't like the fries from In-N-Out.

  • This wasn't on my phone. I don't have TikTok installed on either my personal or work cell phone. It was on my wife's phone, which always has auto-updates turned off. She hates updates and never lets them happen. She woke up one morning and TikTok was updated with no way to turn that off. Two of her friends also complained that their apps auto-updated overnight.

  • I work side by side with the Space Force, so I know a lot of military members.

The truth is it is all over the map. There's a big difference between the branches of the military. There's a big difference between enlisted and officers. There's also a TON of civilians doing work behind the scenes, and most of them are left of center.

The issue is less what the members of the military believe or think is right/wrong, but more how much they will tolerate while keeping their head down for the paycheck they need. I was in the Pentagon the day after the election last year when it was clear Trump had won. It was like a funeral. People were walking around depressed and quiet. Most of them were absolutely terrified about what that election meant. But I guarantee you 90% of those people are either still there or were laid off last year (either voluntarily with 6mo pay or against their will).

  • Fatburger is a California based fast-ish food chain. They are better than McDonalds but also more expensive and slower and not any nicer to eat/order at. Their burgers are configurable with a lot of options, but in the end you end up paying restaurant prices for a burger that isn't as good and isn't much faster.

  • Apple forced an update on iphones that auto-updated TikTok, which now has mandatory reporting of your geolocation (including SIM card and GPS info). This geolocation sharing can't be turned off in Settings like all other apps. It is greyed out for TikTok.

You think this is all coincidental?

  • Or the intentional actions of a person who understands that his insane ramblings can cause stock market drops and that walking back those insane ramblings will cause stock markets to recover, allowing him and his buddies to make more money.

  • Curiosity: by "partner" do you mean sex partner or life partner?

  • drastically cutting down the need for traditional boilers. As a result, MARA’s two bitcoin districts have avoided greenhouse gas emissions

Doesn't that depend on the source of the electricity and the method of heat production for the boilers? I know electricity generation and transmission is more efficient than fossil fuel burning for boilers, but what if the boilers used heat pumps or another more efficient heating source?

  • Not surprising. Korea has a HUGE population of smokers. While it has gone down in very recent years, back in 2017 almost half of all male adults were smokers. They still have 30% of the adult male population as smokers, though, which is double the US male smoking population.
