  • All seasons are best called rain and cold tires. They are absolutely not “no seasons” and are appropriate in 3 or 4 seasons depending on where you live.

I’ve lived in upstate NY and driven FWD cars with all seasons plenty of times, even in deep accumulation. This was my first time with this car, which happens to have wider tire compared to my old cars, and those plus an off camber turn was the recipe for understeering into a ditch. I was driving at a significantly reduced speed and my car was completely fine after being pulled out.

“You get what you deserve” well, fuck you, too.

  • You won’t, because you fundamentally misunderstand what’s happening.

  • Heh, I put my car in the ditch because I’m used to driving in the south and was attempting to get home for Thanksgiving weekend on all seasons. The tow truck guy sounded pretty busy and it took a few hours for him to come pull me out, so I was far from the only one.

  • We got 7 to 14 inches in upstate New York recently. Gotta love that lake effect. It’s also been quite chilly.

  • Well, that statement is completely incorrect. The magnetic field doesn’t attract particles, which I stated in my earlier comment. It only guides the particles towards the poles, particles which were already headed towards the planet after being emitted. It does not attract particles (pull, in your words) towards the planet that would otherwise miss it had the magnetic field not existed.

In fact, a stronger magnetic field would be a better shield to deflect particles away from a majority of the planet.

  • The more factors, the less secure. Each one you add is another potential exploitable authentication method. It’s only as secure as the least secure MFA method you add.

  • The absolute distance is extremely relevant to how many particles reach the planet, which in turn is extremely relevant to how bright the aurora is.

  • I don’t disagree with anything you said; but my point still stands. It’s nearly universally supported these days, even on cheap ass TVs.

For windows users I either point them to Plex so they can hop on my server, MPC-HC (from Klite codec pack), or VLC. In OPs case I’d just include VLC along with the video files.

My Plex users use a multitude of shitty TVs and old consoles, and they report no issues back to me. It’s not the same compatibility situation as it was years ago.

  • I don’t think you’re quite understanding the distances involved in what I’m getting at. The particle flux is minuscule, and it’s not the magnetic field that’s attracting particles. It’s only guiding the particles that were already headed towards the planet.

This planet would have great aurorae if it were near a star, but it’s not, so the magnetic field strength is kind of a moot point.

  • I’ve found x265 is pretty universally supported in 2025. I’ve switched all of my downloads for Plex over to 265 and none of my users have reported issues. My users are not particularly tech savvy and have a ton of diversity in their devices from cheap ass smart TVs, to consoles, to various mobile devices and computers.

I think it’s fairly safe to start getting everything in 265 and the space savings is significant. Very easy to get 4K HDR rips that look great for only 5-7 GB. HD rips can easily be 1-2 GB.

Include VLC if you need a player, but again I’ve found nearly everything plays 265 these days. It’s not nearly the compatibility issue it was years ago.

MP4 container, 265 video (w/ HDR10 layer if appropriate), Dolby digital audio (w/ Atmos track if appropriate) is what I usually look for these days for a balance of compatibility and quality.

  • No one:

Me: Once again the “no one:” format demonstrating how pointless it is, as cropping that bit out leads to the same thing.

  • Both the magnetic field strength and charged particle flux fall off proportional to the square of the distance from the planet / star respectively, so I doubt it gets much of anything even with a strong magnetic field unless it’s also near a star.

I’d also point out that the particles aren’t really attracted by the earths magnetic field, we’re just in the pathway, and the magnetic field funnels them to the poles. It’s more guidance than attraction.

  • Right, and sometime in the future it’ll be an even larger problem like fucking up multiple planets. Of course the problems of today are unique in their scale; they’ll also be dwarfed by problems in the future, and today will seem simple in comparison.

There’s a reason people always think the world / society is going to end with their generation, that we’re somehow unique in the amount of damage we can wreak.

You’d be incredibly lucky to witness the end of the world, it’s something people have been talking about for thousands of years.

Yes, I agree that we have more ability than ever to cause harm to the environment. No, I don’t think the perception of this is anything unique. If you keep advancing, the problems only get worse and worse. Thus, it’s the same as it ever was. People think we’re going to destroy the world just like every other generation has and will in the future.

If you don’t agree, that’s fine. It’s just my opinion, not an objective fact.

  • No, I don’t think I’m being profound by saying an extremely common phrase akin to “the more things change, the more things stay the same.” I just don’t think today is all that different from the past, even with trillionaires.

  • Same as it ever was. Today’s incomprehensible horrors will seem quaint and simple 100 years in the future.

  • Good points. Mac mini is pretty cheap though, cheaper than most consoles.

  • How is this a nightmare vision? Proprietary bullshit, which is what consoles are, is what Apple does better than the others. M series chips seem ideal in terms of hardware, and a consolized Mac mini would be pretty dope.
