Firstly, the concept of a crime is arbitrary and decided by the state, for lack of better words, so do you want the state to have the apparatus to harm its citizens at all? We all agree rapists should be in prison, but should someone who say dislikes Israel be given equivalent or worse treatment?
Secondly, the aim of a prison should not be to punish at all! But instead to reform/reeducate. Data backs this, countries with high reconviction rates are those which harbour the philosophy that a prisoner should be punished for their wrongdoings. Those same countries have much worse social issues and by extension economic issues (look at minorities (racial and economic) in gringoland). Countries with low reconviction rates offer better quality rights to its citizens and by extension QOL.
