    Probably why I prefer graphic novels and was not really into textual books that much. I wish I could play a whole movie in my head while reading a book. I'm so jealous.

    Recently I think they make it so couples can register their marriage in any jurisdiction. And not have to go to one of the couple's birth town.

    I couldn't fully understand whether or not their children's Hukou will now be in the location of their marriage registration. But it's a good step forward and they saw a brief spike in marriage registration overall.

    It's so weird that they've been so stubborn about it for so long, even as their cities expand to accommodate migrants and the population growth is slowed.

  • I think it's part of the effort to curb the population decrease. It's not in the culture to pearl clutch about LGBTQ+ people as morally wrong like western cultures.

    They are trying anything to influence people to make babies. Stricter pornography rules, shaming women for not making babies, shaming "feminine men", and that includes banning dating apps that helps indulge in activities that don't help with making babies. Making queer people less visible is unfortunately part of the strategy.

    Though queer media is however not as banned as people think, so far at least.

  • Nope haha, just their Facebook app on their mobile phones is needed to grab all the data. And once logged in, Facebook will actually track the user's phone usage and their Internet usage as data without the user knowing. To add to their pile to analyze the user.

    This also includes Instagram and Whatsapp. Meta's other products.

    Not participating in any of their products so your data is not their raw resource is good, keep it that way.

  • Evidently they are still pulling enough users and click through rates to warrant their reputation in advertising. Whether or not some numbers are propped up by bots, who's to know.

    Imagine billions of people depending on their platforms, and most of them will be accessing it through their official mobile apps which generally will be harder to block ads on, and most people will not seek out those methods. It's the reason they push their official app so much. For some it is a lower priority for them, and some may even enjoy targeted advertising.

    There are platforms like YouTube where you can pay to opt out of seeing ads, which is also another revenue stream.

  • They are paid by advertisers that want to sell you things and ideas. Google and Meta's job is to keep you on their platform as long as possible so you can be served more advertisements. And to keep you dependent on their free platform to gather more data about what you like and your behavior patterns to easily influence and predict what advertisements grab your interest.

    And because they have the data on you to know exactly who you are and what you may like, it's valuable for advertisers because they know their cat litter advertisement is going to be shown to someone who very obviously has a cat through all their activities and interactions on the platform.

  • The more time I live on this earth, the more I see so many aspects of it is that "different strokes for different folks" apply to. So much conflict has been started because people wanting to force some ideal/correct/only way of doing things on another.

  • I sometimes think about how we got here. How now this has become some people's only option. Amazon banked on people relying on them and scooped up market share, and destroyed small businesses so they became the only option. People don't even look for alternatives or discover businesses around them anymore. I had to help a few friends understand this. I had a friend buying toilet paper from Amazon, that's literally sold everywhere.

    When I say don't use Amazon, it's not to shame the people who can't, it's to have them think of an alternative, train out their reliance. Don't continue to give Amazon that reliance.

    There are not many times you need that specific obscure part, most of the time it's things that will have alternative sources. So it's about taking a moment to just consider.

    Target Jeff Bezos because he is literally top of the list of billionaires, he does not need the money. You can use this as a measurement. Newegg is a better option. A small electronics store that delivers in your country if their brick and mortar store is not near you, even better.

    And like you pointed out, perfection is the enemy of progress.

    This combined with just considering if you actually need something or just want junk advertised to you. It's a way to break from frivolous consumption as well, which Amazon also relies on. Also consider that you don't need things this fast. I feel like Amazon broke our perception. We used to not get things delivered for up to 2 weeks and that was fine. But somehow it's unacceptable if it's not there the next day. Most things you buy are not emergencies. Waiting does not waste your time, your life goes on while you wait.

    Though I will say your argument is still centered around being productive and effective for the company (make money for the company), the article specifically centers around an individual's well-being (sleep, family life etc.). So not the same metrics.

    Other articles and research I've seen that did center on productivity did conclude that yes, it depends.
