  • Keep an eye on Open Web UI. I’ve heard rumblings that it’s starting to enshittify.

  • FYI, A1111 is obsolete. The diffusers or comfy-based backends are way faster, richer, less buggy and support newer things.

I’d recommend UIs that support SVDQuant, in particular.

  • AFAIK there are also problems that Chinese companies have their own tool chain, and are releasing high level truly open source solutions for AI.

One interesting thing about the Chinese “AI Tigers” is the lack of Tech Bro evangelism.

They see their models as tools. Not black box magic oracles, not human replacements. And they train/structure/productize them and such.

But with AI you can use whatever tool is best value, and switch to the competition whenever you want.

Big Tech is making this really hard, though.

In the business world, there’s a lot of paranoia about using Chinese LLM weights. Which is totally bogus, but also understandably hard to explain.

And OpenAI and such are working overtime to lock customers in. See: iOS being ChatGPT-only; no “pick your own API.” Or Disney using Sora when they should really be rolling their own finetune.

  • Yeah.

Hence most that "make it" do it through external links, like sponsors, OnlyFans, merch, blog/newsletter subscriptions and such.

Yet the platforms are trying to squash that. Just the other day, I witnessed the official YouTube Android TV app skip a video's sponsor.

  • Debate

    Jump
  • Yeah. This is something I keep realizing.

So many people simply seek to 'support' their tribe/idols. Scientific debate isn't the point; loyalty and conformity is.

It’s a feature of a lot of religious culture. And, in an oddly similar way, influencer culture.

And there is absolutely nothing you can do about it unless there's a really huge personal connection/issue.

  • That's what I'm saying.

You have to use YouTube, Tiktok, whatever. But at least be a little more self aware and vocal of the platform's pitfalls.

And to be clear, some content creators already are. But it needs to be the majority. They need to remind every single viewer "this place is a trap, a bloodsucking leech, and we're here because we have no choice." Just subtly enough to avoid deranking, of course.

  • Hence articles like this bother me:

    https://www.axios.com/2025/12/13/joy-reid-leaving-corporate-media

    YouTube, Instagram and TikTok…

That’s the trap. These mega platforms feel like “liberating” creative outlets, but they take basically all the ad revenue and hand out scraps; the absolute bare minimum to keep creators around. And that ratio shrinks as the monopoly grows.

Yet creators, even journalists trained to sniff out profiteering, go in blind to that.

And yes, I get it. “Just don’t use them,” is much harder said than done.

…But they could be a little more critical of their platform, like this lady.

  • Mojang’s development has always been painfully conservative.

It sucks for the modding scene and features in general, but it’s also kept the game from enshittifying. Mostly.

  • Notch went down the alt right rabbit hole, didn’t he?

    And they’re owned by Microsoft.

…I think you should already consider investigating potential alternatives. I mean, I like Minecraft, but the principles of its owners isn't helping. And Mojang can’t hold back enshittification forever.

  • Yeah, that is a great application because you can eyeball your bash script and verify its functionality. It’s perfectly checkable. This is a very important distinction.

It also doesn’t require “creativity” or speculation, so (I assume) you can use a very low temperature.

Contrast that with Red Hat’s examples.

They’re feeding it a massive dump of context (basically all the system logs), and asking the LLM to reach into its own knowledge pool for an interpretation.

Its assessment is long, and not easily verifiable; see how the blog writer even confessed “I’ll check if it works later.” It requires more “world knowledge.” And long context is hard for low active parameters LLMs.

Hence, you really want a model with more active parameters for that… Or, honestly, just reaching out to a free LLM API.

Thing is, that Red Hat’s blogger could probably run GLM Air on his laptop and get a correct answer spit out, but it would be extremely finicky and time consuming.

  • Good link, thanks.

Yeah, I buy that, especially in poorer places. But also, I think it’s just simple “scammer opportunism.”

  • Maybe they could remaster old movies/shows and “re-release them” for attention like they do games? The tools they have to do it now are quite good.

  • And this graph is old, isn’t it? Their wealth is snowballing rapidly, hence Larry Ellison is at $250B now.

  • It reminds me of crypto. “Etherium would work perfectly if people just stopped acting so… human! And used it right!”

Chatbots are the same. They’re selling a fantasy that’s just not how human beings behave.

  • Wuthering Waves

I have nothing against a beautiful animesque art style, but… does it have to be rail-thin women in schoolgirl skirts and stockings? Is this game the exception?

    EDIT:

    Watches Steam trailer.

Literally magic schoolgirl skirts and stockings. Complete with winking in action.

    Who?

    Jump
  • Yeah.

People harp on Onlyfans, but how sexualized and “softcore teasing” Insta and even TikTok are kinda creeps me out. They’re literally entry points to OF.

I have a parent who’s blissfully off of social media, and it was interesting to see their reaction to what they’re like now.

See all the errors in that rambling wall of slop (which they posted and didn’t even check for some reason?)

Trying to use a local LLM… could be worse. But in my experience, small ones are just too dumb for stuff beyond fully automated RAG or other really focused cases. They feel like fragile toys until you get to 32B dense or ~120B MoE.

Doubly so behind buggy, possibly vibe coded abstractions.

The other part is that Goose is probably using a primitive CPU-only llama.cpp quantization. I see they name check “Ryzen AI” a couple of times, but it can’t even use the NPU! There’s nothing “AI” about it, and the author probably has no idea.

I’m an unapologetic local LLM advocate in the same way I’d recommend Lemmy/Piefed over Reddit, but honestly, it’s just not ready. People want these 1 click agents on their laptops and (unless you’re an enthusiast/tinkerer) the software’s simply not there yet, no matter how much AMD and such try to gaslight people into thinking it is.

Maybe if they spent 1/10th of their AI marketing budget on helping open source projects, it would be…

  • It’s international, but there are a lot of Europeans: https://archlinux.org/people/developers/

CachyOS has its roots in the Polish Arch community if I recall correctly. It’s much less daunting, and I’d highly recommend it.

  • And functional! You’re looking at Dakar rally champions, and hatchbacks so unreasonably fast on dirt, their league was banned.

This is what actual off-roaders look like.
